Aberrant DNA methylation plays a crucial role in breast cancer progression by regulating gene expression. However, the regulatory pattern of DNA methylation in long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) for breast cancer remains unclear. In this study, we integrated gene expression, DNA methylation, and clinical data from breast cancer patients included in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. We examined DNA methylation distribution across various lncRNA categories, revealing distinct methylation characteristics. Through genome-wide correlation analysis, we identified the CpG sites located in lncRNAs and the distally associated CpG sites of lncRNAs. Functional genome enrichment analysis, conducted through the integration of ENCODE ChIP-seq data, revealed that differentially methylated CpG sites (DMCs) in lncRNAs were mostly located in promoter regions, while distally associated DMCs primarily acted on enhancer regions. By integrating Hi-C data, we found that DMCs in enhancer and promoter regions were closely associated with the changes in three-dimensional chromatin structures by affecting the formation of enhancer–promoter loops. Furthermore, through Cox regression analysis and three machine learning models, we identified 11 key methylation-driven lncRNAs (DIO3OS, ELOVL2-AS1, MIAT, LINC00536, C9orf163, AC105398.1, LINC02178, MILIP, HID1-AS1, KCNH1-IT1, and TMEM220-AS1) that were associated with the survival of breast cancer patients and constructed a prognostic risk scoring model, which demonstrated strong prognostic performance. These findings enhance our understanding of DNA methylation’s role in lncRNA regulation in breast cancer and provide potential biomarkers for diagnosis. Full article

Background/Objectives: Renal transplantation is the treatment of choice for patients with end-stage renal disease. In the last decade, the number of older renal transplant recipients has significantly increased. However, these patients are at a higher risk of developing post-transplant complications. Therefore, identifying the suitable biomarkers to predict which older patients are at risk of complications is crucial. Cellular senescence could provide insights into the increased vulnerability in this population and guide personalized post-transplant care. Methods: This preliminary study involved biopsies from 25 patients with renal allograft rejection and 18 patients without rejection, further divided into older (50–65 years) and younger (29–40 years) groups. Biopsies were collected at different time points after transplantation, and rejection was classified according to the histological Banff 07 criteria. Additionally, immunohistochemistry for the markers of cellular senescence, p27kip1 and p16INK4a, was performed. Results: We observed that the number of p27kip1-positive glomeruli was higher in the older patients with rejection compared to the younger patients with rejection, and a similar pattern was found in the patients without rejection. However, the number of p27kip1-positive tubules was higher in the older patients with rejection compared to the younger patients with rejection, as well as compared to both the older and younger patients without rejection. Tubular p16INK4a expression was not significantly different in the older patients with rejection compared to the younger patients with rejection, and the same pattern was observed in the patients without rejection. However, it was increased in the older patients with rejection in comparison to the older patients without rejection. Conclusions: Our preliminary data suggest the strong potential of both p16INK4a and p27kip1 as biomarkers of renal graft rejection, particularly in older renal transplant recipients. Full article

Leaf-trait variation has traditionally been focused on both within and among species along environmental gradients, while leaf age has received less attention. By measuring leaf morphological, stomatal, and stoichiometric traits of 40 coexisting woody species in temperate forest in northern China, we analyzed their variation pattern and the correlations among different plant life forms and leaf age. We found that leaf age has significant effects on leaf functional traits. The young leaves of both shrub and tree species revealed a lower stoma density (SD) and a higher stoma length (SL), stoma width (SW), and leaf N content (LNC) than mature leaves. Shrub species have a higher SLA and SD than tree species for both young and mature leaves. The traits of young leaves generally revealed a higher variation than those of mature leaves. Although correlations between traits are similar between young leaves and mature leaves, the slopes of the SLA–SD and SD–LNC relationships were significantly affected by leaf age. These findings elucidate the adaptive changes of leaf traits during leaf maturation and underscore the trade-off between stomatal safety and efficiency, as well as the trade-off between leaf hydraulic and economic traits in temperate woody species during leaf development. We conclude that variation in leaf traits with age may play a potentially important role in understanding the ecological function of woody species in temperate forests. Full article

This study examines the intricate relationship between economic growth and European environmental degradation via the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC). Our results contest the traditional inverted U-shape model of the Environmental Kuznets Curve, indicating that the theory may not be consistently applicable across European countries. Utilizing CS-ARDL and MMQR modelling, we reveal substantial regional disparities. Western European nations demonstrate a typical Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) pattern in the short term, characterized by an initial increase in emissions alongside GDP development, followed by a subsequent fall. Conversely, Eastern and Balkan nations exhibit a U-shaped connection, described by an early decline in emissions followed by a subsequent increase as their development levels increase. The influence of renewable energy differs, as it decreases emissions in the short term in Western Europe. However, its long-term impacts are variable, especially when contrasted with its more pronounced effect on emissions in Eastern and Balkan countries. Furthermore, trade openness intensifies environmental degradation in the short-term across all regions, although its long-term impact diminishes, particularly concerning greenhouse gases (GHG). The relationship between renewable energy and trade openness is substantial for the short-term reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, but this effect declines with time. The results indicate that a uniform environmental policy throughout Europe may lack efficacy. Customized strategies to expedite the transition in Western Europe and more specific interventions in Eastern Europe are essential to harmonize economic progress with environmental sustainability. Future research should examine the determinants of the diminishing long-term effects of renewable energy and the interplay between trade and environmental policies. Full article

This paper deals with the stability and occurrence of Hopf bifurcation of a distributed delay differential cobweb model using the chain trick technique. This is a generalized form of the fixed delay cobweb model to which it is compared using the same parameter values. The results from the delay distribution showed that whenever less weight (γ=0.146) is put on past prices, the current equilibrium price is adjusted upwards while the reverse is observed when a higher weight (γ=0.186) is put on the previous price. It is also observed that if the initial price is set below/above the equilibrium price, the price adjustment either affects the consumers or benefits the suppliers. However, the fixed delay cobweb model does not display the consumers or suppliers benefits of the price dynamics in either direction. These are unique, underlying patterns in price dynamics discovered when using a distributed delay model compared to traditional fixed delay cobweb models. Furthermore, our model challenges the traditional cobweb model’s requirement for divergence, as it is based on the weight assigned to past prices rather than the relationship between the elasticities of supply and demand, which is the determining factor in the classical model. Based on these insights, we recommend that future price adjustment models incorporate distributed delays, as they reveal more intricate price dynamics and provide a more comprehensive understanding of market behavior than fixed delay models. The enrichment and migration patterns of different chemical elements record paleoclimatic information in loess formations. The chemical elemental measurements of 245 samples from the Shiyang profile in the Weinan Region were compared with the geochemical characteristics of typical wind-formed profiles, and the paleoclimatic evolution was discussed. The results showed the following: (1) the standardized curves of the cumulative concentrations of SiO2, Al2O3, and CaO along with the Upper Continental Crust (UCC) in the Shiyang profile exhibited significant similarities with typical wind-formed profiles. This strongly suggests that the Shiyang profile has a wind-formed origin. (2) The mean value of the chemical index of alteration (CIA) of the Shiyang profile is 62.06, indicating that the Shiyang profile has been in the stage of primary chemical weathering. (3) The ratios of K2O/Al2O3, TiO2/Al2O3, and Fe2O3/Al2O3 in the Shiyang profile are comparable to those found in typical wind-formed profiles, suggesting a common source area and supporting the premise that the Shiyang profile is of wind-induced origin.(4) The regional climate has undergone a series of transitions: from a dry and cool phase in the early Holocene to warm and humid yet unstable conditions in the middle Holocene, and returning to dry and cool during the late Holocene. Assessment of Phosphine Resistance in Major Stored-Product Insects in Greece Using Two Diagnostic Protocols

Post-harvest losses due to insect infestation and spoilage by bacteria and molds pose significant challenges to global cereal production. This study investigates the prevalence of resistance to phosphine, a commonly used grain protection agent, in stored-grain insects. The research, conducted in various storage facilities across Greece, examined 53 populations of key stored-product insect species. Two assessment protocols, namely, dose–response (at 50–1000 ppm for 3 days exposure) and CORESTA (at 300 ppm for 6 days), were used herein to estimate phosphine resistance. The results showed that 13.3% of field populations were resistant, and mortality rates increased with higher phosphine concentrations. Specifically, according to the dose–response protocol, among the 53 field populations, 37.7% were found to be resistant to phosphine, namely, two populations of O. surinamensis, one of S. oryzae, seven of T. confusum, one of C. ferrugineus, one of T. castaneum, and all populations of R. dominica, whereas, according to the CORESTA protocol, all populations were found to be susceptible to phosphine. The observed resistance patterns differ from those reported in other regions of the world. The study highlights the importance of tailored fumigation strategies, considering insect species varying susceptibility to phosphine. It recommends the use of best management practices and rotational strategies, such as combining phosphine with other methods, to develop effective resistance management plans. The results provide valuable insights into the dynamic landscape of phosphine resistance in stored-product insects and suggest potential avenues for further research and control measures. Background: High-energy chest trauma often results in rib fractures and associated chest injuries. This study explored fracture distribution patterns in high-energy chest trauma, using three-dimensional (3D) fracture mapping technology. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed cases of high-energy chest trauma with rib fractures treated at a Level 1 Trauma Center, from February 2012 to January 2023. Specifically, 3D computed tomography (CT) was used to reconstruct rib fractures and create fracture-frequency heat maps, analyzing the influence of other thoracic fractures on rib fracture distribution. Results: Rib fractures were frequently found in the anterior and posterior thoracic areas. On average, patients sustained 7 ± 3.87 rib fractures, with clavicle fractures in 25.5% and scapular fractures in 19.6% of cases. Scapular fractures led to more posterior rib fractures, while sternal fractures were associated with more anterior rib fractures. Clavicle fractures were linked to fractures of the first to third ribs. Conclusions: Rib fractures in high-energy chest trauma occurred most often in the anterior and posterior regions. Fractures of the scapula and sternum influence the positioning of the fracture lines. Clavicular fractures are associated with a higher incidence of upper rib fractures. These findings can help inform surgical decisions and complication management. Full article

The Lijiang–Jinpingshan fault (LJF) is an important secondary boundary fault that obliquely cuts the Sichuan–Yunnan rhombic block. It is of great significance for understanding the tectonic evolution of the Sichuan–Yunnan rhombic block and even the southeastern margin of the Tibet Plateau. Based on a digital elevation model (DEM), this work combines ArcGIS with MATLAB script programs to extract geomorphic indices including slope, the relief degree of the land surface (RDLS), hypsometric integral (HI), and channel steepness index (ksn) of 593 sub–watersheds and strip terrain profiles around the LJF. By analyzing the spatial distribution characteristics of the geomorphic indices and combining the regional lithology and precipitation conditions, the spatial distribution of the geomorphic indices around the study area was analyzed to reveal the implications of the LJF’s activity. The results of this work indicate that (1) the distribution of geomorphic indices around the LJF may not be controlled by climate and lithological conditions, and the LJF is the dominant factor controlling the geomorphic evolution of the region. (2) The spatial distribution patterns of geomorphic indices and strip terrain profiles reveal that the vertical movement of the LJF resulted in a pronounced uplift on its northwest side, with tectonic activity gradually diminishing from northeast to southwest. Furthermore, based on the spatial distribution characteristics of these geomorphic indices, the activity intensity of the LJF can be categorized into four distinct segments: Jianchuan–Lijiang, Lijiang–Ninglang, Ninglang–Muli, and Muli–Shimian. (3) The activity of the LJF obtained from tectonic geomorphology is consistent with the conclusions obtained in previous geological and geodesic studies. This work provides evidence of the activity and segmentation of the LJF in tectonic geomorphology. The results provide insight for the discussion of tectonic deformation and earthquake disaster mechanisms in the southeastern margin of the Tibet Plateau. Full article

Background: The treatment of psoriasis has made considerable progress with biologicals, including tumor necrosis factor inhibitors, and recently, monoclonal antibodies inhibiting directly interleukin (IL) 17, IL-23, or both IL-12/23. Newer biologicals are directed to the interleukin pathway and appear to improve complete or near-complete clearance. The newer biologicals have also been shown to have an excellent safety profile. However, despite experience with patients having confirmed the results obtained in clinical trials, there are still few data on using the newer biologicals. Methods: The present active study aimed to prospectively evaluate safety profiles and persistence of some biologicals in a multicenter pharmacovigilance study, that enrolled 733 patients treated with a biologic drug in five Calabrian hospital units. Informative and treatment persistence evaluations with predictors for suspension and occurrence of adverse events (AEs) were executed. In particular, reasons for treatment discontinuation in our program take account of primary/secondary failure or development of an AE. Results: AEs occurred in 187/733 patients and serious AEs (SAEs) were identified in 5/733 patients. An number of 182/733 patients showed a primary/secondary inefficacy. The AEs and SAEs were described with adalimumab, infliximab, and etanercept but not with abatacept, brodalumab, tildrakizumab, golinumab, ixekizumab, guselkumab, risankizumab, secukinumab, and ustekinumab. Conclusions: Our analysis, although limited by a small sample size and a short-term follow-up period, offers suitable data on commonly used biological agents and their safety, interruption rate, and the attendance of SAEs. Real-world studies should be carried out to evaluate other safety interests. Full article

The implementation of the laser sintering for inkjet-printed nanoparticles and metal organic decomposition (MOD) inks on a flexible polymeric film has been analyzed in detail. A novel approach by implementing, next to a commonly 3.2 mm diameter spot laser optic, a line laser optic with a laser beam area of 2 mm × 80 mm, demonstrates the high potential of selective laser sintering to proceed towards a fast and efficient sintering methodology in printed electronics. In this work, a multiplicity of laser parameters, primary the laser speed and the laser power, have been altered systematically to identify an optimal process window for each ink and to convert the dried and non-conductive patterns into conductive and functional silver structures. For each ink, as well as for the two laser optics, a suitable laser parameter set has been found, where a conductivity without any damage to the substrate or silver layer could be achieved. In doing so, the margin of the laser speed for both optics is ranging in between 50 mm/s and 100 mm/s, which is compatible with common inkjet printing speeds and facilitates an in-line laser sintering approach. Considering the laser power, the typical parameter range for the spot laser lays in between 10 W and 50 W, whereas for the line optics the full laser power of 200 W had to be applied. One of the nanoparticle silver inks exhibits, especially for the line laser optic, a conductivity of up to 2.22 × 107 S‧m−1, corresponding to 36% of bulk silver within a few seconds of sintering duration. Both laser sintering approaches together present a remarkable facility to use the laser either as a digital tool for sintering of defined areas by means of a spot beam or to efficiently sinter larger areas by means of a line beam. With this, the utilization of a laser sintering methodology was successfully validated as a promising approach for converting a variety of inkjet-printed silver patterns on a flexible polymeric substrate into functionalized conductive silver layers for` applications in the field of printed electronics. Spatial and Temporal Change Analysis of Urban Built-Up Area via Nighttime Lighting Data—A Case Study with Yunnan and Guizhou Provinces

As urbanization accelerates, characteristics of urban spatial expansion play a significant role in the future utilization of land resources, the protection of the ecological environment, and the coordinated development of population and land. In this study, Yunnan and Guizhou provinces were selected as the study area, and the 2013–2021 National Polar-Orbiting Partnership’s Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (NPP-VIIRS) nighttime light (NTL) data were utilized for spatial and temporal change analysis of urban built-up areas. Firstly, the built-up areas in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces were extracted through ENUI (Enhanced Nighttime Lighting Urban Index) indices, and then the urban expansion speed and urban center of gravity migration were constructed and used to explore and analyze the spatial and temporal change and expansion characteristics of built-up areas in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. The results showed the following. (1) Due to the complementarity between data types, such as NTL, EVI, NDBI, and NDWI, ENUI has better performance in expressing urban characteristics. (2) Influenced by national and local policies, such as “One Belt, One Road”, transportation infrastructure construction, geographic location, the historical background, and other factors, the urban expansion rate of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces in general showed a continuous advancement from 2013 to 2021, and there were three years in which the expansion rate was positive. (3) The center of gravity migration distance of most cities in Guizhou Province shows a trend of increasing and then decreasing, while the center of gravity migration distance in Yunnan Province shows a trend of continuous decrease in general. From the perspective of migration direction, Guizhou Province has the largest number of migrations to the northeast, while Yunnan Province has the largest number of migrations to the southeast. (4) Influenced by policy, economy, population, geography, and other factors, urban compactness in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces continued to grow from 2013 to 2021. The results of this study can help us better understand urbanization in western China, reveal the urban expansion patterns and spatial characteristics of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, and provide valuable references for development planning and policymaking in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. Ammopiptanthus mongolicus is an ancient remnant species from the Mediterranean displaying characteristics such as high-temperature tolerance, drought resistance, cold resistance, and adaptability to impoverished soil. In the case of high-temperature tolerance, heat shock transcription factors (HSFs) are integral transcriptional regulatory proteins exerting a critical role in cellular processes. Despite extensive research on the HSF family across various species, there has been no analysis specifically focused on A. mongolicus. In this study, we identified 24 members of the AmHSF gene family based on the genome database of A. mongolicus, which were unevenly distributed over 9 chromosomes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these 24 members can be categorized into 5 primary classes consisting of a total of 13 subgroups. Analysis of the physical and chemical properties revealed significant diversity among these proteins. With the exception of the AmHSFB3 protein, which is localized in the cytoplasm, all other AmHSF proteins were found to be situated in the nucleus. Comparison of amino acid sequences revealed that all AmHSF proteins contain a conserved DNA-binding domains structure, and the DNA-binding domains and oligomerization domains of the AmHSF gene exhibit conservation with counterparts across diverse species; we investigated the collinearity of AmHSF genes in relation to those of three other representative species. Through GO enrichment analysis, evidence emerged that AmHSF genes are involved in heat stress responses and may be involved in multiple transcriptional regulatory pathways that coordinate plant growth and stress responses. Finally, through a comprehensive analysis using transcriptome data, we examined the expression levels of 24 AmHSFs under 45 °C. The results revealed significant differences in the expression profiles of AmHSFs at different time intervals during exposure to high temperatures, highlighting their crucial role in responding to heat stress. In summary, these results provide a better understanding of the role and regulatory mechanisms of HSF in the heat stress response of A. mongolicus, meanwhile also establishing a foundation for further exploration of the biological functions of AmHSF in the adversity response of A. mongolicus. Resonant Forcing by Solar Declination of Rossby Waves at the Tropopause and Implications in Extreme Precipitation Events and Heat Waves—Part 2: Case Studies, Projections in the Context of Climate Change

Based on the properties of Rossby waves at the tropopause resonantly forced by solar declination in harmonic modes, which was the subject of a first article, case studies of heatwaves and extreme precipitation events are presented. They clearly demonstrate that extreme events only form under specific patterns of the amplitude of the speed of modulated airflows of Rossby waves at the tropopause, in particular period ranges. This remains true even if extreme events appear as compound events where chaos and timing are crucial. Extreme events are favored when modulated cold and warm airflows result in a dual cyclone-anticyclone system, i.e., the association of two joint vortices of opposite signs. They reverse over a period of the dominant harmonic mode in spatial and temporal coherence with the modulated airflow speed pattern. This key role could result from a transfer of humid/dry air between the two vortices during the inversion of the dual system. Finally, focusing on the two period ranges 17.1–34.2 and 8.56–17.1 days corresponding to 1/16- and 1/32-year period harmonic modes, projections of the amplitude of wind speed at 250 mb, geopotential height at 500 mb, ground air temperature, and precipitation rate are performed by extrapolating their amplitude observed from January 1979 to March 2024. Projected amplitudes are regionalized on a global scale for warmest and coldest half-years, referring to extratropical latitudes. Causal relationships are established between the projected amplitudes of modulated airflow speed and those of ground air temperature and precipitation rate, whether they increase or decrease. The increase in the amplitude of modulated airflow speed of polar vortices induces their latitudinal extension. This produces a tightening of Rossby waves embedded in the polar and subtropical jet streams. In the context of climate change, this has the effect of increasing the efficiency of the resonant forcing of Rossby waves from the solar declination, the optimum of which is located at mid-latitudes. Hence the increased or decreased vulnerability to heatwaves or extreme precipitation events of some regions. Europe and western Asia are particularly affected, which is due to increased activity of the Arctic polar vortex between longitudes 20° W and 40° E. This is likely a consequence of melting ice and changing albedo, which appears to amplify the amplitude of variation in the period range 17.1–34.2 days of poleward circulation at the tropopause of the Arctic polar cell. Leveraging Classifier Performance Using Heuristic Optimization for Detecting Cardiovascular Disease from PPG Signals

Background/Objectives: Photoplethysmography (PPG) signals, which measure blood volume changes through light absorption, are increasingly used for non-invasive cardiovascular disease (CVD) detection. Analyzing PPG signals can help identify irregular heart patterns and other indicators of CVD. Methods: This research involves a total of 41 subjects sourced from the CapnoBase database, consisting of 21 normal subjects and 20 CVD cases. In the initial stage, heuristic optimization algorithms, such as ABC-PSO, the Cuckoo Search algorithm (CSA), and the Dragonfly algorithm (DFA), were applied to reduce the dimension of the PPG data. Next, these Dimensionally Reduced (DR) PPG data are then fed into various classifiers such as Linear Regression (LR), Linear Regression with Bayesian Linear Discriminant Classifier (LR-BLDC), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), PCA-Firefly, Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Kernel LDA (KLDA), Probabilistic LDA (ProbLDA), SVM-Linear, SVM-Polynomial, and SVM-RBF, to identify CVD. Classifier performance is evaluated using Accuracy, Kappa, MCC, F1 Score, Good Detection Rate (GDR), Error rate, and Jaccard Index (JI). Results: The SVM-RBF classifier for ABC PSO dimensionality reduced values outperforms other classifiers, achieving the highest accuracy of 95.12% along with the minimum error rate of 4.88%. In addition to that, it provides an MCC and kappa value of 0.90, a GDR and F1 score of 95%, and a Jaccard Index of 90.48%. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that heuristic-based optimization and machine learning classification of PPG signals are highly effective for the non-invasive detection of cardiovascular disease.
