An intelligent optimization technique has been presented to enhance the multiple structural performance of PA6-20CF carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) plastic injection molding (PIM) products. This approach integrates a deep neural network (DNN), Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II), and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS), collectively referred to as the DNN-GA-MCS strategy. The main objective is to ascertain complex process parameters while elucidating the intrinsic relationships between processing methods and material properties. To realize this, a numerical study on the PIM structural performance of an automotive front engine hood panel was conducted, considering fiber orientation tensor (FOT), warpage, and equivalent plastic strain (PEEQ). The mold temperature, melt temperature, packing pressure, packing time, injection time, cooling temperature, and cooling time were employed as design variables. Subsequently, multiple objective optimizations of the molding process parameters were employed by GA. The utilization of Z-score normalization metrics provided a robust framework for evaluating the comprehensive objective function. The numerical target response in PIM is extremely intricate, but the stability offered by the DNN-GA-MCS strategy ensures precision for accurate results. The enhancement effect of global and local multi-objectives on the molded polymer–metal hybrid (PMH) front hood panel was verified, and the numerical results showed that this strategy can quickly and accurately select the optimal process parameter settings. Compared with the training set mean value, the objectives were increased by 8.63%, 6.61%, and 9.75%, respectively. Compared to the full AA 5083 hood panel scenario, our design reduces weight by 16.67%, and achievements of 92.54%, 93.75%, and 106.85% were obtained in lateral, longitudinal, and torsional strain energy, respectively. In summary, our proposed methodology demonstrates considerable potential in improving the, highlighting its significant impact on the optimization of structural performance. Full article

A coupled thermomechanical non-ordinary state-based peridynamics (NOSB-PD) model is developed to simulate the dynamic response arising from temperature and to predict the crack propagation with thermal shocks in brittle and ductile solids. A unified multiaxial constitutive model with damage growth is proposed to simultaneously describe the ductile and brittle fracture mechanisms. The main idea is the use of Lemaitre’s model to describe ductile damage behavior and the use of tensile strength instead of yield stress in Lemaitre’s model to describe brittle damage behavior. A damage-related fracture criterion is presented in the PD framework to predict crack propagation, which avoids numerical oscillations when using the traditional bond stretch criterion. To capture the dynamic plastic response induced by thermal shocks, the time and stress integration are achieved by an alternating solving strategy and implicit return-mapping algorithm. Several numerical examples are presented to show the performance of the proposed model. Firstly, a thermomechanical problem simulation based on both the proposed model and the FEM illustrate the accuracy of the proposed model in studying the thermal deformation. Moreover, a benchmark brittle fracture example of the Kalthoff–Winkler impact test is simulated, and the crack path and angle are similar to the experimental observations. In addition, the simulation of ductile fracture under different loads illustrates the effect of temperature on crack propagation. Finally, the simulation of the 2D quenching test shows the ability of the proposed model in predicting crack propagation under thermal shocks. Full article

Ulrika Carlsson has argued that it its justified to harbor non-moral resentment towards a person with whom one is unrequitedly in love. Anca Gheaus has rejected this with convincing arguments. This text explores the question of whether Gheaus’ verdict changes if the person being loved has previously flirted with the loving person. For this, it is first relevant what flirting actually is and how it relates to falling in love and love. On this basis, it is argued here that in the case of flirting, the non-moral resentment of the loved person defended by Carlsson is appropriate. By flirting, he or she has contributed to the unrequited love, even if he or she cannot be held responsible for it in a moral sense. Full article

Plant functional traits are an important indicator for the comprehensive evaluation of community stability and resilience. Therefore, exploring the variations and relationships among leaf functional traits at different maturity levels during forest restoration can deepen the understanding of plant adaptation strategies and community assembly. In this study, we measured the leaf area (LA), specific leaf area (SLA), photosynthetic pigments, non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs), leaf nitrogen content (LNC), and leaf phosphorus content (LPC) of dominant tree species in three communities with different maturity levels (defined by species composition, biodiversity and spatial structure) in a monsoon forest located in the northern margin of the tropics in China, and explored the variation and relationships among different leaf traits at individual, species, and community scales. The results showed that maturity levels significantly affected leaf functional traits. With the increase in maturity levels, SLA increased, and leaf SS and NSCs decreased, while other leaf functional traits did not show a consistent pattern. In different communities, NSCs, Chl (a:b), SS:St or Car had a trade-off or synergistic relationship with leaf economic spectrum. Additionally, the LPC, LNC, and starch were the key traits in response to selection pressure at maturity levels, inter-specific and intra-specific scales, respectively, and the trait–trait relationships were stronger or more extreme as the scale was narrowed. Therefore, when evaluating the development and succession of tropical monsoon forest communities, the selection of leaf functional characteristics and the determination of the research scale should be comprehensively and systematically considered. Elicitors and Biostimulants to Mitigate Water Stress in Vegetables

The acceleration of the climate crisis and increased demand for water have caused water stress in many agricultural lands worldwide. This issue is of utmost importance as water stress represents one of the most crucial challenges for the agricultural sector and food security, affecting the growth and yield of crops. Developing agricultural strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of water stress and improve crop stress tolerance and crop yield is therefore crucial. This review aimed to analyze the effect of agricultural practices such as elicitation and biostimulation on mitigating the effects of water stress in vegetables. This manuscript provides relevant and recent information about the studied effects on various vegetable species and their responses under water deficit and agricultural and non-agricultural strategies to mitigate water stress, highlighting the use of elicitors and biostimulants. Inclusion criteria were scientific reports and book chapters published from 2000 to 2024, including keywords as follows: water stress + vegetables, water deficit + effects, drought stress management, agricultural strategies for water stress management, eustressors + water stress, elicitors and biostimulants + water stress mitigation. According to the reported literature, it was found that the physiological, biochemical, and molecular responses of vegetables to water stress depended on factors such as the severity and duration of the water deficit, the plant species, and the phenological state of the plants. Traditional agronomic strategies such as tillage, mulching, and intercropping for crop drought management were evaluated. Recently, alternative strategies for mitigating the effects of water stress have gained significant interest, such as the exogenous application of phytohormones and osmoprotectants, nutrient management, and the use of UV-B light, radiation, and acoustic waves, among others, whose eustressive effects (as biostimulants and elicitors) have been demonstrated. Among these eustressors, those of physical origin show great potential for mitigating water stress. To improve the individual potential of eustressors for water stress mitigation, we proposed the combination of practices such as tillage, mulching, application of hormones and osmoprotectants, and physical elicitors and biostimulants such as gamma rays, He-Ne laser, and UV-B. Further exploration is required to establish doses, application conditions, and effects on water stress mitigation and vegetable yield, underscoring the importance and ongoing nature of this research. Among the non-communicable neurological diseases, epilepsy is characterized by abnormal brain activity with several peripheral implications. The role of peripheral inflammation in the relationship between seizure development and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease based on sex difference remains still overlooked. Severe early-life infections lead to increased inflammation that can aggravate epilepsy and hepatic damage progression, both related to increased odds of hospitalization for epileptic patients with liver diseases. Here, we induced a post-natal-day 3 (PND3) infection by LPS (1 mg/kg, i.p.) to determine the hepatic damage in a genetic model of young epileptic WAG/Rij rats (PND45). We evaluated intra- and inter-gender differences in systemic and liver inflammation, hepatic lipid dysmetabolism, and oxidative damage related to mitochondrial functional impairment. First, epileptic rats exposed to LPS, regardless of gender, displayed increased serum hepatic enzymes and altered lipid profile. Endotoxin challenge triggered a more severe inflammatory and immune response in male epileptic rats, compared to females in both serum and liver, increasing pro-inflammatory cytokines and hepatic immune cell recruitment. Conversely, LPS-treated female rats showed significant alterations in systemic and hepatic lipid profiles and reduced mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation. The two different sex-dependent mechanisms of LPS-induced liver injury converge in increased ROS production and related mitochondrial oxidative damage in both sexes. Notably, a compensatory increase in antioxidant defense was evidenced only in female rats. Our study with a translational potential demonstrates, for the first time, that early post-natal infections in epileptic rats induced or worsened hepatic disorders in a sex-dependent manner, amplifying inflammation, lipid dysmetabolism, and mitochondrial impairment. Objectives: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the non-inferiority of a quadrivalent influenza vaccine (QIV) developed by Sinovac Biotech Co., Ltd. (Sinovac, Beijing, China) by comparing its immunogenicity and safety with a comparator QIV (Vaxigrip Tetra®) in a population aged 3 years and older in Chile and the Philippines. Methods: A phase 3, non-inferiority, double-blind, randomized controlled, multicenter clinical trial was conducted in the southern hemisphere (SH) 2023 influenza season. Participants aged ≥ 3 years old with stable health were randomized 1:1 to receive either Sinovac QIV or comparator QIV. The co-primary outcomes were immunological non-inferiority for Sinovac QIV versus the comparator against each strain contained in the vaccines in terms of seroconversion rates (SCRs) and geometric mean titers (GMTs) of hemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibodies 28 days after final vaccination. Results: A total of 2039 participants were vaccinated (1019 Sinovac QIV; 1020 comparator QIV). Sinovac QIV induced non-inferior immune responses to all four strains as compared to comparator QIV, with slightly higher GMTs than those of comparator QIV: GMT ratios (lower limit 95% confidence interval (CI)) were 1.8 (1.6) for A(H1N1), 1.4 (1.3) for A (H3N2), 1.3 (1.1) for B Victoria and 1.2 (1.1) for B Yamagata; observed seroconversion rate differences (lower limit 95% CI) were 9.6% (6.7) for A(H1N1), 7.0% (3.5) for A(H3N2), 2.4% (−0.03) for B Victoria and 6.8% (3.0) for B Yamagata. Adverse reactions were similar across the two groups and no vaccine-related serious adverse events were reported. Conclusions: The immunogenicity of Sinovac QIV was non-inferior to that of the comparator QIV in these populations aged 3 years and older, and safety was comparable. Full article

In the midst of rigorous market rivalry, enhancing a company’s competitiveness and operational efficiency in an era of rapid IT advancement is a pressing concern for business leaders. The National Big Data Comprehensive Zone (BDCZ) pilot scheme, instituted by the Chinese government, systematically addresses seven core objectives, encompassing data resource management, sharing and disclosure, data center consolidation, application of data resources, and the circulation of data elements. This policy initiative aims to bolster the establishment of information infrastructure through big data applications, facilitate the influx and movement of talent, and propel corporate sustainable growth. Utilizing a quasi-natural experiment approach, we assess the pilot policy’s influence on the digital-intelligent transformation (DIT) of manufacturing companies from a green innovation ecosystem perspective, employing datasets from 2010 to 2022, and methodologies such as Difference-in-Differences (DID), Synthetic Differences-in-Differences (SDID), and Propensity Score Matching-DID (PSM-DID). The findings indicate that the BDCZ initiative significantly fosters DIT in manufacturing companies. The policy’s establishment confers benefits, including access to increased government support and innovation capital, thereby enhancing the sustainability of green innovation efforts. It also strengthens corporate collaboration, engendering synergistic benefits that improve regional economic progression and establish a conducive environment for digital development, ultimately enhancing the regional innovation ecosystem. The pilot policy’s impact varies across entities, with more profound effects observed in developed financial markets compared to underdeveloped ones. Additionally, non-state-owned companies exhibit a greater response to BDCZ policy interventions than their state-owned counterparts. Moreover, manufacturing bussiness with a higher proportion of executive shareholding are more substantially influenced by the BDCZ. This article fills the research gap by using the quasi-natural experiment of BDCZ to test the impact on DIT of companies and provides inspiration for local governments to mobilize the enthusiasm of manufacturing companies for DIT. Because the PCAOB was unable to inspect audits of Chinese accounting firms until recently, regulators introduced legislation (HFCAA) potentially forcing Chinese companies to delist for non-compliance with PCAOB audit requirements. To understand the equity markets’ response to this legislation, we analyze the short-term (event study) and long-term stock performance of U.S.-listed Chinese firms relative to the stock performance of other foreign companies. We find that Chinese companies outperform other Asian firms for the Pre-HFCAA Period, but they underperform other Asian firms from the time the HFCAA was introduced (28 March 2019) until an agreement was reached (26 August 2022). For the post-agreement period (26 August 2022 to 31 December 2022), the performance of Chinese and other Asian stocks is similar. Between 28 March 2019 and 31 December 2022, a typical shareholder lost 76% of wealth, and, compared to other Asian companies, the losses were around 87%. The findings highlight the importance of regulatory compliance and transparency in maintaining investor confidence and protecting shareholders’ interests. Full article

The adherence of pathogenic microorganisms to surfaces and their association to form antibiotic-resistant biofilms threatens public health and affects several industrial sectors with significant economic losses. For this reason, the medical, pharmaceutical and materials science communities are exploring more effective anti-fouling approaches. This review focuses on the anti-fouling properties, structure–activity relationships and environmental toxicity of quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) and, as a subclass, ionic liquid compounds. Greener alternatives such as QAS-based antimicrobial polymers with biocide release, non-fouling (i.e., PEG, zwitterions), fouling release (i.e., poly(dimethylsiloxanes), fluorocarbon) and contact killing properties are highlighted. We also report on dual-functional polymers and stimuli-responsive materials. Given the economic and environmental impacts of biofilms in submerged surfaces, we emphasize the importance of less explored QAS-based anti-fouling approaches in the marine industry and in developing efficient membranes for water treatment systems. Recently, the application of a rhizobacterium, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain PMB05, has been demonstrated to enhance flg22Pst- or harpin-triggered PTI response such as callose deposition. This PTI intensification by PMB05 further contributes to plant disease resistance to different bacterial diseases. Under the demand for rapid and large-scale screening, it has become critical to establish a non-staining technology to identify microbial strains that can enhance PTI responses. Firstly, we confirmed that the expression of the GSL5 gene, which is required for callose synthesis, can be enhanced by PMB05 during PTI activation triggered by flg22 or PopW (a harpin from Ralstonia solanacearum). The promoter region of the GSL5 gene was further cloned and fused to the coding sequence of gfp. The constructed fragments were used to generate transgenic Arabidopsis plants through a plant transformation vector. The transgenic lines of AtGSL5-GFP were obtained. The analysis was performed by infiltrating flg22Pst or PopW in one homozygous line, and the results exhibited that the green fluorescent signals were observed until after 8 h. In addition, the PopW-induced fluorescent signal was significantly enhanced in the co-treatment with PMB05 at 4 h after inoculation. Furthermore, by using AtGSL5-GFP to analyze 13 Bacillus spp. strains, the regulation of PopW-induced fluorescent signal was observed. And, the regulation of these fluorescent signals was similar to that performed by callose staining. More importantly, the Bacillus strains that enhance PopW-induced fluorescent signals would be more effective in reducing the occurrence of bacterial wilt. Taken together, the technique by using AtGSL5-GFP would be a promising platform to screen plant immunity-intensifying microbes to control bacterial wilt. Full article

Patients with TP53-Mutated Acute Myeloid Leukemia Receiving Intensive Induction Therapy Have Superior Outcomes Due to a Higher Rate of Salvage Therapy: A Single Institution, Retrospective Study

Background: TP53 mutations (TP53m) define the most treatment-refractory acute myeloid leukemia (AML) subtype. Optimal treatment approaches have not been established in this setting. We reviewed our institutional experience to identify therapy sequencing, treatment response, and survival patterns in these patients. Methods: This study was a single-center, retrospective cohort analysis. Results: Our cohort includes 86 TP53m and 337 TP53 wild-type (TP53wt) adult AML patients. TP53m AML patients presented with lower bone marrow and peripheral blasts; none presented with hyperleukocytosis. Patients who received intensive treatment up front demonstrated superior overall survival (OS) over those receiving first-line non-intensive therapy (2-year OS 22% versus 7%; p = 0.02). However, the complete remission (CR) rates among the first-line intensive and non-intensive therapy groups were comparable (21.9% and 29.4%, respectively, p = 0.49). The improved OS is therefore attributed to superior cumulative CR in the intensive group. First-line intensively treated patients were more likely to receive and respond to salvage, leading to a cumulative CR rate of 65.7% (versus 29.4%, p = 0.003). Achieving CR at any point is strongly associated with superior survival outcomes with 2-year OS of 31% versus 0% for those not achieving CR ever (p < 0.01). Conclusions: We find that TP53m AML rarely presents with oncological emergencies, suggesting that clinical trial enrollment is feasible in this group. Additionally, in our cohort, intensive induction therapies lead to superior survival outcomes attributed to successful salvage therapy. These data suggest that strategic therapy sequencing and salvage therapy may be important in optimizing outcomes for TP53m AML patients. Full article

Given the convenience with which information can now be acquired, it is crucial to analyze cases of potential misinformation and disinformation in postsecondary education. Instructor credibility judgments were measured using descriptive survey research, and the main objective was to investigate trends related to misinformation, credibility, trust, bias, and others in graduate students and on a graduate program basis. Participants were surveyed from a land grant institution in the southeast United States where 186 graduate students completed an electronic survey on the detection of misinformation and similar experiences. Graduate students were divided based on graduate program into STEM (sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and non-STEM groups. Quantitative methodologies included validated questionnaires developed by researchers containing Likert-type scale questions. Chi-square tests of independence and frequencies served as primary analyses. Participants in both STEM and non-STEM groups detected the following: misinformation, bias, challenges, intimidation, risk of measurable consequences, pressure to conform, and skepticism from post-secondary instructors. There were significant differences between the type of student for trust in claims (p < 0.05), while the perception of potential consequences tended to be different between the types of graduate students (0.05 < p < 0.10). Participants in both STEM and non-STEM groups reported perception bias in science material presentation, with STEM students reporting less bias. Qualitative methodologies included optional open response boxes to provide supporting details or narratives. Reliable and validated thematic coding following served as the primary analysis. Students disciplined in STEM and non-STEM faced misinformation, bias, challenges, intimidation, risk of measurable consequences, pressure to conform, and skepticism from post-secondary instructors. Graduate students reported consistent instances of misinformation and bias about science and agriculture topics in both science and non-science-focused classrooms. Full article

Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) was developed for inoperable patients with severe aortic stenosis. However, despite TAVR advancements, some patients remain untreated due to complex comorbidities, necessitating less-invasive approaches. Non-invasive ultrasound therapy (NIUT), a new treatment modality, has the potential to address this treatment gap, delivering short ultrasound pulses that create cavitation bubble clouds, aimed at softening embedded calcification in stiffened valve tissue. Methods: In the prospective Valvosoft® Serbian first-in-human study, we assessed the safety and efficacy of NIUT and its impact on aortic valve hemodynamics, on the left ventricle, and on systemic inflammation in patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis not eligible for TAVR or surgery. Results: Ten patients were included. Significant improvements were observed in hemodynamic parameters from baseline to one month, including a 39% increase in the aortic valve area (from 0.5 cm2 to 0.7 cm2, p = 0.001) and a 23% decrease in the mean transvalvular gradient (from 54 mmHg to 38 mmHg, p = 0.01). Additionally, left ventricular global longitudinal strain significantly rose, while global wasted work significantly declined at one month. A dose–response relationship was observed between treatment parameters (peak acoustic power, intensity spatial-peak pulse-average, and mean acoustic energy) and hemodynamic outcomes. NIUT was safely applied, with no clinically relevant changes in high-sensitivity troponin T or C-reactive protein and with a numerical, but not statistically significant, reduction in brain natriuretic peptide (from 471 pg/mL at baseline to 251 pg/mL at one month). Conclusions: This first-in-human study demonstrates that NIUT is safe and confers statistically significant hemodynamic benefits both on the valve and ventricle. Full article

Industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa) production is complex, with strict regulatory constraints and challenges associated with a lack of labeled pesticides due to its status as a novel crop in the US. Four experiments were conducted in 2020 and 2021 to establish herbicide tolerances for hemp production in the coastal plain of Georgia, USA. Objectives included evaluating hemp response to pretransplant or posttransplant herbicides, determining if planting method influenced herbicide injury from residual preplant applied herbicides, and understanding how plastic mulch may influence hemp flower yields. When applied one day prior to transplanting, maximum hemp crop visual injury was less than 12% compared to the untreated control, with acetochlor, flumioxazin, fomesafen, pendimethalin, and norflurazon while dithiopyr, halosulfuron, isoxaben, and isoxaflutole resulted in greater than 50% injury. Posttransplant applications of S-metolachlor, acetochlor, pendimethalin, and clethodim resulted in less than 15% injury while halosulfuron, metribuzin, trifloxysulfuron, imazethapyr, and prometryn applications resulted in greater than 50% injury to plants. Preplant and posttransplant applied herbicides were found to have little effect on total tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), or total cannabinoids in the dry flower after harvest. In a separate experiment, injury from halosulfuron and metribuzin was 52% to 56% less when planted with a mechanical transplanter as compared to the practice of using a transplant wheel to depress a hole in the soil followed by hand transplanting. In the final experiment, hemp dry flower yield in a non-plastic mulched (bareground) system was similar to that in a plastic mulched system. However, early season plant above-ground biomass was less in the plastic mulched system, which may have been due to elevated soil temperatures inhibiting early season growth. Full article
