A Practical, Adaptive, and Scalable Real-Time Control Approach for Stormwater Storage Systems

Traditionally, urban stormwater infrastructure systems consist of passive infrastructure that is not actively controlled in response to rainfall events. Recently, real-time control (RTC) has been considered as a means to significantly increase the capacity and lifespan of these systems. This paper introduces the target flow control systems (TFCS) approach, which can use real-time control of systems of storages to achieve the desired flow conditions at the locations of interest. The first distinctive feature of this approach is that it does not require calibration to catchment-specific data, unlike existing approaches. This means that the TFCS approach is generally applicable to different catchments and is able to respond to future changes in runoff due to land use and/or climate change. The second distinctive feature is that the approach only requires storage-level information measured in real time with the aid of low-cost pressure sensors. This means that the approach is practical and relatively easy to implement. In addition to the introduction of the novel TFCS approach, a key innovation of this study is that the approach is tested on three case studies, each with different physical configurations and stormwater management objectives. Another key innovation is that the TFCS approach is compared to five RTC approaches, including three of the best-performing advanced approaches from the literature. Comparisons of multiple RTC approaches that consider both performance and practicality across multiple case studies are rare. Results show that the TFCS approach is the only one of the five control approaches analysed that has both the best overall performance and the highest level of practicality. The outcomes highlight the potential of the TFCS approach as a practical RTC approach that is applicable to a wide range of catchments with different stormwater management objectives. By maximizing the performance of existing stormwater storages, the TFCS approach can potentially extend the lifespan of existing infrastructure and avoid costly upgrades due to increased runoff caused by land use and climate change. The expansion of homebrewing among hobbyists and beer lovers has enabled the availability of fabulous and non-conventional flavors to a broader public. However, homebrewing conditions are not standardized and greatly depend on the meticulosity of the homebrewer. To ensure minimum hygienic conditions, homebrewers need to employ more effort than the standardized brewing industry. Cleaning and sanitation ask for a meticulous and thorough, almost perfect cleaning and sanitation pattern in order to ensure healthy fermentation and safe beer. The implementation of cleaning and sanitation methods can greatly prolong the lifespan of kegged or bottled beer and accent the excellent aromas and taste of homebrewed beer. Since there is a lack of scientific literature concerning this aspect of brewing, this paper is conceptualized as a review that covers all the major concerning/hazardous points in homebrewing and summarizes potential actions to maximize cleaning and sanitation efficiency in the homebrewing process. Children and adolescents (C&As) with congenital heart defects (CHDs) have decreased functional capacity and executive functioning (EF) due to brain abnormalities and decreased cerebral perfusion. Exercise may improve EF via increased cognitive demands and cerebral blood supply. The purpose of this review was to identify evidence describing the impact of physical activity (PA) interventions on EF in C&As with CHDs. The following databases were searched from 2000 to 2024: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus, CENTRAL, and PsycInfo. The inclusion criteria consisted of participants aged from birth to 18 years with CHD, interventions related to PA, and EF as an outcome measure. Articles were excluded if adults were included, translation to English was impossible, and full access was unavailable. Of 613 initial articles, 3 were analyzed, with only 1 meeting all inclusion criteria. The included study found significant improvements in self-reported cognitive functioning and parent-reported social functioning after 12 weeks of aerobic exercise in children aged 10–15 years with CHDs. Common themes among the reviewed articles indicated that EF remains impaired throughout the lifespan, children have unique interventional and developmental needs, and research remains limited despite theoretical benefits. Further investigation of the effect of PA on EF in C&As with CHDs is needed. Full article

Megalurothrips usitatus (Bagnall) feeds on the young tissues of plants, causing wilting and deformity of leaves as well as damage to flowers and fruits, thereby seriously affecting plant yield. Due to its small size and difficulty of control, the species is one of the most important pests in the legume family. To clarify the occurrence and damage pattern of M. usitatus on field crops, a study was conducted using eight different crops as experimental materials, and an age-stage, two-sex life table was constructed. The population density of M. usitatus was the highest on cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.), followed by green beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and Vigna cylindrica (Vigna unguiculata subsp. cylindrica (L.) Verdc.) in terms of net reproductive rate and the intrinsic rate of increase. In terms of reproductive capacity, cowpeas and V. cylindrica were more suitable for M. usitatus growth and reproduction, followed by green beans. M. usitatus could develop into adults on courgettes (Cucurbita pepo L.), wax gourds (Benincasa hispida Thunb. Cogn.), Momordica charantia (Momordica charantia L.), and soybeans (Glycine max L. Merr.) but had difficulty reproducing on those plants. Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) was the least suitable for the survival of M. usitatus. Population parameter analysis showed that the cowpea was the most suitable host plant for M. usitatus, followed by green beans and V. cylindrica. M. usitatus had difficulty reproducing on courgette, wax gourd, M. charantia, and soybeans, and feeding on cucumbers inhibited M. usitatus development and reproduction. Full article

Urban wastewater (UWW) and landfill leachate (LL) co-treatment using membrane bioreactors (MBRs) is a valuable method for managing LL in cities. Coagulants can enhance the filterability of mixed liquor (ML), but the assessment of fouling is still needed. This research aimed to investigate the effects of co-treating synthetic wastewater (SWW) and real LL on an MBR, as well as the impact of adding poly-aluminum chloride (PACl) and Tanfloc SG. Cell-ultrafiltration experiments were conducted with four different feeds: synthetic wastewater, co-treatment with LL (20% v/v), and co-treatment with the addition of 30 mg L−1 coagulants (either PACl or Tanfloc). Co-treatment aggravated flux loss and reduced the recovery rate; however, Tanfloc and PACl improved recovery after cleaning (by 11% and 9%, respectively). Co-treatment also increased cake and irrecoverable/irremovable inorganic resistances, though coagulants reduced the latter, despite a lower fit of the Hermia models during the first hour of filtration. Co-treatment reduced the removal efficiencies of almost all pollutants analyzed, with the most significant impacts observed on the organic fraction. Coagulants, particularly Tanfloc, enhanced overall performance by improving flux recovery and reducing irreversibility, thus benefiting membrane lifespan. In conclusion, Tanfloc addition yielded the best results in terms of filterability and pollutant removal. Full article

This article proposes a methodology for establishing a relationship between the change rate of a given gene (relative to a given taxon) together with the amino acid composition of the proteins encoded by this gene and the traits of the species containing this gene. The methodology is illustrated based on the mammalian genes responsible for regulating the circadian rhythms that underlie a number of human disorders, particularly those associated with aging. The methods used are statistical and bioinformatic ones. A systematic search for orthologues, pseudogenes, and gene losses was performed using our previously developed methods. It is demonstrated that the least conserved Fbxl21 gene in the Euarchontoglires superorder exhibits a statistically significant connection of genomic characteristics (the median of dN/dS for a gene relative to all the other orthologous genes of a taxon, as well as the preference or avoidance of certain amino acids in its protein) with species-specific lifespan and body weight. In contrast, no such connection is observed for Fbxl21 in the Laurasiatheria superorder. This study goes beyond the protein-coding genes, since the accumulation of amino acid substitutions in the course of evolution leads to pseudogenization and even gene loss, although the relationship between the genomic characteristics and the species traits is still preserved. The proposed methodology is illustrated using the examples of circadian rhythm genes and proteins in placental mammals, e.g., longevity is connected with the rate of Fbxl21 gene change, pseudogenization or gene loss, and specific amino acid substitutions (e.g., asparagine at the 19th position of the CRY-binding domain) in the protein encoded by this gene. Most individuals in the general population will be exposed to potentially traumatic situations at some point in their lifespan. There is a strong body of research focusing on the clinical implications of exposure to potentially traumatic situations, but less attention has been given to psychological adjustment following these events. Very few available instruments assess trauma exposure while considering subjective perceptions of both positive and negative features. In this study, 304 adults from the general population, mostly women of middle and high socioeconomic status (mean age = 43), filled in a questionnaire with sociodemographic questions and an adapted version of the Trauma Exposure Checklist, which was originally developed in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results indicate that most participants have experienced a potentially traumatic event, most prevalently related to violence and/or criminality and to the severe illnesses and deaths of close relatives. Principal components and reliability analyses lent support to a three-factor structure that considers perceptions of internal and external losses and a positive factor that addresses resources and social support. This study is a first step towards advancing our knowledge on the impact of developmental and sociodemographic factors on subjective experiences of psychological crises and, consequently, psychological adjustment throughout the lifespan. Accurate prediction of the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of lithium-ion batteries is essential for enhancing energy management and extending the lifespan of batteries across various industries. However, the raw capacity data of these batteries is often noisy and exhibits complex nonlinear degradation patterns, especially due to capacity regeneration phenomena during operation, making precise RUL prediction a significant challenge. Although various deep learning-based methods have been proposed, their performance relies heavily on the availability of large datasets, and satisfactory prediction accuracy is often achievable only with extensive training samples. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel method that integrates sequence decomposition algorithms with an optimized neural network. Specifically, the Complementary Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN) algorithm is employed to decompose the raw capacity data, effectively mitigating the noise from capacity regeneration. Subsequently, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is used to fine-tune the hyperparameters of the Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (BiGRU) model. The final BiGRU-based prediction model was extensively tested on eight lithium-ion battery datasets from NASA and CALCE, demonstrating robust generalization capability, even with limited data. The experimental results indicate that the CEEMDAN-PSO-BiGRU model can reliably and accurately predict the RUL and capacity of lithium-ion batteries, providing a promising and reliable method for RUL prediction in practical applications. Association between Egg Consumption and Dementia in Chinese Adults

Background/Objectives: The association between egg consumption and dementia is unclear. We carried out a population-based case-control study in China to determine the independent association of egg consumption with dementia. Methods: We randomly recruited 233 participants with dementia and 233 without dementia from the community health service clinics and the dementia management system in Guangzhou, China to examine their dietary intakes over the past two years and other risk factors for chronic diseases. Egg consumption was categorised by frequency as Non-consuming/<monthly, Monthly, Weekly, Daily or ≥Twice a day. Results: Participants with dementia, compared to controls, were more likely to consume eggs at Monthly (15.5% vs. 8.6%) but less likely to consume at Daily (28.3% vs. 41.6%). The age-adjusted odds ratio (OR) of dementia was 1.76 (95% CI 1.10–2.84) in participants who consumed eggs Weekly and 4.34 (2.16–8.72) in Monthly consumption compared to Daily. However, no significant associations were found for those Non-consuming/<monthly 1.35 (0.71–2.56) and ≥Twice a day 3.49 (0.83–14.67). After further adjustments, including gender, education, family income, smoking, alcohol consumption, dietary intakes (including red meats, poultry, fish, vegetables and fruits), cardiovascular disease and other co-morbidities, the corresponding ORs were 2.10 (1.10–4.02), 4.82 (1.90–12.27), 0.73 (0.29–1.88) and 4.16 (0.80–21.63), respectively. Among participants who consumed eggs Monthly, Weekly or Daily, an inverse association between egg consumption and dementia was observed; the multiple adjusted OR of dementia was 0.48 (0.30–0.76) per average increment in egg consumption. Compared to Monthly consumption, the OR for Weekly consumption was 0.44 (0.18–1.08) and 0.22 (0.08–0.59) for Daily consumption. Conclusions: This study suggests that Daily egg consumption could help reduce the risk of dementia, while uncertainties regarding the association of non-consuming/<monthly or ≥Twice a day consumption with dementia warrant further research. Retrotransposons are mobile DNA elements that are more active with increasing age and exacerbate aging phenotypes in multiple species. We previously reported an unexpected extension of chronological lifespan in the yeast, Saccharomyces paradoxus, due to the presence of Ty1 retrotransposons when cells were aged under conditions of mild stress. In this study, we tested a subset of genes identified by RNA-seq to be differentially expressed in S. paradoxus strains with a high-copy number of Ty1 retrotransposons compared with a strain with no retrotransposons and additional candidate genes for their contribution to lifespan extension when cells were exposed to a moderate dose of hydroxyurea (HU). Deletion of ADE8, NCS2, or TRM9 prevented lifespan extension, while deletion of CDD1, HAC1, or IRE1 partially prevented lifespan extension. Genes overexpressed in high-copy Ty1 strains did not typically have Ty1 insertions in their promoter regions. We found that silencing genomic copies of Ty1 prevented lifespan extension, while expression of Ty1 from a high-copy plasmid extended lifespan in medium with HU or synthetic medium. These results indicate that cells adapt to expression of retrotransposons by changing gene expression in a manner that can better prepare them to remain healthy under mild stress. Full article

This paper presents the development of a numerical analysis model designed to estimate the lifespan of reduced-diameter wheels used in freight wagons based on their diameter, under quasi-static conditions. These wheels are increasingly being used in combined transport applications, where they are installed in various bogie configurations and subjected to different operational environments. However, due to the unique characteristics of reduced-diameter wheels, their lifespan has been scarcely studied. To accurately build this model, an in-depth investigation of the rolling phenomenon was required, addressing key issues in the track–vehicle interaction and establishing relationships between these factors. After constructing the rail–wheel interaction model, it was applied to calculate the lifespan of wheels with standard, medium, and reduced diameters under identical conditions for comparison. This approach makes it possible to determine the lifespan of reduced-diameter wheels relative to standard ones, as well as to observe how lifespan changes with wheel diameter, and it is observed how lifespan diminishes non-linearly with decreasing diameters. The underlying reasons for this variation are explained through a comprehensive understanding of the rolling phenomenon, enabled by the full analysis. Full article

Glial cell dysfunction results in myelin loss and leads to subsequent motor and cognitive deficits throughout the demyelinating disease course.Therefore, in various therapeutic approaches, significant attention has been directed toward glial-restricted progenitor (GRP) transplantation for myelin repair and remyelination, and numerous studies using exogenous GRP injection in rodent models of hypomyelinating diseases have been performed. Previously, we proposed the transplantation of canine glial-restricted progenitors (cGRPs) into the double-mutant immunodeficient, demyelinated neonatal shiverer mice (shiverer/Rag2−/−). The results of our previous study revealed the myelination of axons within the corpus callosum of transplanted animals; however, the extent of myelination and lifespan prolongation depended on the transplantation site (anterior vs. posterior). The goal of our present study was to optimize the therapeutic effect of cGRP transplantation by using a multisite injection protocol to achieve a broader dispersal of donor cells in the host and obtain better therapeutic results. Experimental analysis of cGRP graft recipients revealed a marked elevation in myelin basic protein (MBP) expression and prominent axonal myelination across the brains of shiverer mice. Interestingly, the proportion of galactosyl ceramidase (GalC) positive cells was similar between the brains of cGRP recipients and control mice, implying a natural propensity of exogenous cGRPs to generate mature, myelinating oligodendrocytes. Moreover, multisite injection of cGRPs improved mice survival as compared to non-transplanted animals. Full article

Unveiling the Molecular Mechanisms of Glioblastoma through an Integrated Network-Based Approach

Background/Objectives: Despite current treatments extending the lifespan of Glioblastoma (GBM) patients, the average survival time is around 15–18 months, underscoring the fatality of GBM. This study aims to investigate the impact of sample heterogeneity on gene expression in GBM, identify key metabolic pathways and gene modules, and explore potential therapeutic targets. Methods: In this study, we analysed GBM transcriptome data derived from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) using genome-scale metabolic models (GEMs) and co-expression networks. We examine transcriptome data incorporating tumour purity scores (TPSs), allowing us to assess the impact of sample heterogeneity on gene expression profiles. We analysed the metabolic profile of GBM by generating condition-specific GEMs based on the TPS group. Results: Our findings revealed that over 90% of genes showing brain and glioma specificity in RNA expression demonstrate a high positive correlation, underscoring their expression is dominated by glioma cells. Conversely, negatively correlated genes are strongly associated with immune responses, indicating a complex interaction between glioma and immune pathways and non-tumorigenic cell dominance on gene expression. TPS-based metabolic profile analysis was supported by reporter metabolite analysis, highlighting several metabolic pathways, including arachidonic acid, kynurenine and NAD pathway. Through co-expression network analysis, we identified modules that significantly overlap with TPS-correlated genes. Notably, SOX11 and GSX1 are upregulated in High TPS, show a high correlation with TPS, and emerged as promising therapeutic targets. Additionally, NCAM1 exhibits a high centrality score within the co-expression module, which shows a positive correlation with TPS. Moreover, LILRB4, an immune-related gene expressed in the brain, showed a negative correlation and upregulated in Low TPS, highlighting the importance of modulating immune responses in the GBM mechanism. Conclusions: Our study uncovers sample heterogeneity’s impact on gene expression and the molecular mechanisms driving GBM, and it identifies potential therapeutic targets for developing effective treatments for GBM patients. The present study examined the moderating role of maternal and paternal behaviors on the association between ADHD symptoms and antisocial behavior. The data are from a Swedish community-based study with 2886 adolescent participants, aged 13–15. We analyzed the adolescents’ self-reports of negative and positive parental behavior, ADHD symptoms, and antisocial behavior. Results show that ADHD symptoms significantly predicted levels of antisocial behavior in both maternal- and paternal-moderated regression models. Also, several significant interaction effects emerged. Fathers’ attempted understanding and mothers’ warmth significantly buffered the association with antisocial behavior. In turn, mothers’ negative behaviors—both coldness and rejection and angry outbursts—significantly enhanced the association with antisocial behavior, whereas only fathers’ angry outbursts emerged as a significant moderator. Thus, there is support for differential effects of maternal and paternal behavior on the association between ADHD symptoms and adolescent antisocial behavior. Full article

Effect of Grinding Media Grading on Liner Wear and Load Behavior in a Ball Mill by Using Rocky DEM

The liner is a wear-prone component in ball mills, subject to continuous impacts, squeezing, and abrasion from the grinding media during operation. Its service performance directly affects the working efficiency of the ball mill. The service life of mining ball mill liners is about 8 months, and frequent downtimes occur due to liner wear and loss of effectiveness, with liner replacement accounting for about 6% of the total cost, resulting in huge economic losses. This paper focuses on a Φ305 mm × 150 mm experimental ball mill, using the discrete element software Rocky Discrete Element Method (DEM) (software version number Rocky 2022 R2) for simulation modeling analysis. With Φ10 mm and Φ20 mm mono-size particle simulations serving as reference groups, this study investigates the motion states and liner abrasion patterns under different liner heights for both sizes of grinding media in Equilibrium Quality Manufacturer (EQM) and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) gradations. The results indicate that the impact of liner height on the wear of the ball mill liners is related to the size and gradation of the grinding media. The degree of liner wear from highest to lowest is as follows: EQM > Φ20 mm > OEM > Φ10 mm. Due to the effect of the cylinder end cap, the wear at the axial center of the ball mill liner is more severe than at both ends, and the wear on the facing side of the liner is more severe than on the backside. A thorough study of the influence of ball mill grinding media gradation on the wear pattern of liners is of great theoretical significance for optimizing liner structures, improving grinding efficiency, and promoting energy saving and cost reduction in ball mills. This study provides theoretical guidance for understanding the mechanisms behind liner wear in ball mills and predicting the liner lifespan. Full article
