Cold acclimation before winter has been shown to enhance the cold tolerance of evergreen conifers, including Pinus massoniana Lamb., a characteristic heteroblastic foliage tree in the conifer. In the initial growing season of P. massoniana, both primary needle seedlings (PNSs) and secondary needle seedlings (SNSs) are generated. While previous research has highlighted differences in the morphological structure and photosynthetic physiological functions of primary and secondary needles, their response to cold acclimation remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the changes in morpho-anatomical structure, starch grain accumulation, and lignin deposition in the roots, stems, and leaves of PNSs and SNSs during cold acclimation using solid potassium iodide and hydrochloric acid phloroglucinol double-staining techniques. The results revealed that, during cold acclimation, the leaves and stems of PNSs exhibited sensitivity to low-temperature stress, resulting in noticeable shrinkage and fracture of mesophyll and cortical parenchyma cells. Furthermore, the early stages of cold acclimation promoted the accumulation of starch grains and lignin in the seedling tissues. In contrast to PNSs, the leaves and stems of SNSs exhibited a shorter cold acclimation period, attributed to the hydrolysis of starch grains in the epidermal cell walls and the transformation of xylem lignin, which supports cell structure stability and enhances cold resistance. In conclusion, these findings suggest that SNSs displayed a superior cold resistance potential compared to PNSs following cold acclimation, providing a significant theoretical basis for the further screening of cold-tolerant germplasm resources of P. massoniana and the analysis of cold resistance traits in heteroblastic foliage. Background: Stress and human error during perioperative emergency situations can significantly impact patient morbidity and mortality. Previous research has shown that cognitive aid bundles (CABs) minimize critical misses by 75%. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of two different CAB designs with the same content in reducing missed critical management steps for simulated perioperative emergencies. Methods: A multicenter randomized controlled simulation-based study was conducted including 27 teams, each consisting of three participants; each team performed four simulation scenarios. In the first scenario for each team (Scenario 1), no CAB was used. Scenarios 2 and 3 were randomly allocated to the groups, with either a branched, clustered design (CAB-1) or a linear, step-by-step design (CAB-2) of the cognitive aid. In Scenario 4, the groups used one of the previously mentioned CABs according to their own preference. The primary outcome was the difference in the percentage of missed critical management steps between the two different CABs. Secondary outcomes included user preference for one CAB design and the reduction in percentage of missed critical management steps using any CAB versus no CAB. Results: Twenty-seven teams simulated 108 perioperative emergency situations. The percentage of missed critical management steps was similar between CAB-1 and CAB-2 (27% [interquartile range (IQR) 20–29] versus 29% [IQR 20–35], p = 0.23). However, most participants favored the branched, clustered design CAB-1 (77.8%). Additionally, employing any CAB reduced the percentage of missed critical management steps by 36% (33% missed steps vs. 21% missed steps, p = 0.003). Conclusions: While the two CAB designs did not differ significantly in reducing missed critical management steps, the branched, clustered design was perceived as more user-friendly. Importantly, using any CAB significantly reduced the percentage of missed critical management steps compared to not using a cognitive aid, emphasizing the need for CAB use in the operating room. As the global average temperature has increased due to climate change, the use of air conditioning equipment for cooling homes has become more popular. Inverter equipment is advertised as a better energy option than systems with an on/off control; however, there is a lack of sufficient studies to prove this. This work aims to analyze and compare the electricity consumption associated with cooling equipment with an on/off control and inverter equipment. A heat transfer model coupled with energy balance for a room is developed and implemented in Python 3.12. The indoor temperature is controlled by simulating an on/off control and a PID control for the inverter system. Subsequently, the electricity consumption of the two systems is compared, and a sensitivity analysis is performed to determine which variables have the greatest impact on electricity consumption. The results show that the inverter equipment has lower electricity consumption compared to the equipment with the on/off control. However, the sensitivity analysis shows that the indoor temperature set point plays a more relevant role since a 15% variation in its value impacts electricity consumption by up to 77%. Full article

Pig processing industries have produced large quantities of by-products, which have either been discarded or used to make low-value products. This study aimed to provide recommendations for manufacturing edible oil from pig brains, thereby increasing the value of pork by-products. The experiment compared non-solvent extraction methods, specifically wet rendering and aqueous saline, to a standard solvent extraction method, the Bligh and Dyer method, for extracting oil from pig brains. The yield, color, fatty acid profile, a number of lipid classes, and lipid stability against lipolysis and oxidation of the pig brain oil were comprehensively compared, and the results revealed that these parameters varied depending on the extraction method. The wet rendering process provided the highest extracted oil yield (~13%), followed by the Bligh and Dyer method (~7%) and the aqueous saline method (~2.5%). The Bligh and Dyer method and wet rendering techniques produced a translucent yellow oil; however, an opaque light-brown-red oil was found in the aqueous saline method. The Bligh and Dyer method yielded the oil with the highest phospholipid, cholesterol, carotenoid, tocopherol, and free fatty acid contents (p < 0.05). Although the Bligh and Dyer method recovered the most unsaturated fatty acids, it also recovered more trans-fatty acids. Aqueous saline and wet rendering procedures yielded oil with low FFA levels (<1 g/100 g). The PV of the oil extracted using all methods was <1 meq/kg; however, the Bligh and Dyer method had a significant TBARS content (7.85 mg MDA equivalent/kg) compared to aqueous saline (1.75 mg MDA equivalent/kg) and wet rendering (1.14 mg MDA equivalent/kg) (p < 0.05). FTIR spectra of the pig brain oil revealed the presence of multiple components in varying quantities, as determined by chemical analysis experiments. Given the higher yield and lipid stability and the lower cholesterol and trans-fatty acid content, wet rendering can be regarded as a simple and environmentally friendly method for safely extracting quality edible oil from pig brains, which may play an important role in obtaining financial benefits, nutrition, the zero-waste approach, and increasing the utilization of by-products in the meat industry. Cultural property includes immovable assets that are part of a nation’s cultural heritage and reflect the cultural identity of a people. Hence, information about armed conflict’s impact on historical buildings’ structures and heritage sites is extremely important. The study aims to demonstrate the application of Earth observation (EO) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology, and in particular Sentinel-1 SAR coherence time-series analysis, to monitor spatial and temporal changes related to the recent Russian–Ukrainian war in the urban areas of Mariupol and Kharkiv, Ukraine. The study considers key events during the siege of Mariupol and the battle of Kharkiv from February to May 2022. Built-up areas and cultural property were identified using freely available OpenStreetMap (OSM) data. Semi-automated coherent change-detection technique (CCD) that utilize difference analysis of pre- and co-conflict coherences were capable of highlighting areas of major impact on the urban structures. The study applied a logistic regression model (LRM) for the discrimination of damaged and undamaged buildings based on an estimated likelihood of damage occurrence. A good agreement was observed with the reference data provided by the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) in terms of the overall extent of damage. Damage maps enable the localization of buildings and cultural assets in areas with a high probability of damage and can serve as the basis for a high-resolution follow-up investigation. The study reveals the benefits of Sentinel-1 SAR CCD in the sense of unsupervised delineation of areas affected by armed conflict. However, limitations arise in the detection of local and single-building damage compared to regions with large-scale destruction. The proposed semi-automated multi-temporal Sentinel-1 data analysis using CCD methodology shows its applicability for the timely investigation of damage to buildings and cultural heritage, which can support the response to crises. The partial replacement effect of Portland cement by geothermal nano-SiO2 waste (GNSW) for sustainable Portland-cement-based concrete was investigated to improve the properties of concrete exposed at high critical temperatures. Portland cement was partially replaced by 20 and 30 wt.% of GNSW. The partial replacement effect on Portland-cement-based concrete subjected to 350, 550, and 750 °C was evaluated by measuring the weight changes, ultrasonic pulse velocity, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, surface inspection, and scanning electron microscopy under residual conditions. The ultrasonic pulse velocity results showed that the GNSW specimens maintained suitable stability after being heated to 350 °C. The SEM analysis revealed a denser microstructure for the 20 wt.% of partial replacement of Portland cement by GNSW specimen compared to the reference concrete when exposed to temperatures up to 400 °C, maintaining stability in its microstructure. The weight losses were higher for the specimens with partial replacements of GNSW than the reference concrete at 550 °C, which can be attributed to the pozzolanic activity presented by the GNSW, which increases the amounts of CSH gel, leading to a much denser cementitious matrix, causing a higher weight loss compared to the reference concrete. GNSW is a viable supplementary cementitious material, enhancing thermal properties up to 400 °C due to its high pozzolanic activity and filler effect while offering environmental benefits by reducing industrial waste. Potherb mustard (Brassica juncea var. multiceps) is one of the most commonly consumed leafy vegetable mustards, either fresh or in pickled form. It is rich in glucosinolates, whose hydrolyzed products confer potherb mustard’s distinctive flavor and chemopreventive properties. In this study, the composition and content of glucosinolates, as well as the hydrolysis pattern of sinigrin were investigated in potherb mustard leaves of different varieties. Variations in the glucosinolate profile and accumulation were observed among the potherb mustard varieties studied, with sinigrin being the predominant one in all varieties, accounting for 81.55% to 97.27%. Sinigrin tended to be hydrolyzed to isothiocyanate (ITC) rather than epithionitrile (EPN) in potherb mustard, while 3-butenyl nitrile (SIN-NIT) could be hardly detected. Transcriptome analysis revealed a higher expression level of numerous genes involved in aliphatic glucosinolate biosynthesis in X11 compared to X57, corresponding to the higher aliphatic glucosinolate accumulation in X11 (91.07 µmol/g) and lower level in X57 (25.38 µmol/g). ESM1 is known to repress nitrile formation and favor isothiocyanate production during glucosinolate hydrolysis. In this study, all four ESM1s showed a higher expression level in X11 compared to X57, which may determine the hydrolysis pattern of sinigrin in potherb mustard. Altogether, our findings shed light on the glucosinolate metabolic pattern in potherb mustard, which will also facilitate the engineering of metabolic pathways at key checkpoints to enhance bioactive compounds for tailored flavor or pharmaceutical needs. Gametogenesis, the intricate developmental process responsible for the generation of germ cells (gametes), serves as a fundamental prerequisite for the perpetuation of the reproductive cycle across diverse organisms. The g2e3 enzyme is a putative ubiquitin E3 ligase implicated in the intricate regulatory mechanisms underlying cellular proliferation and division processes. The present study delves into the function of G2/M phase-specific E3 ubiquitin protein ligase (Cs-g2e3) in gametogenesis in Chinese Tongue Sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis). Sequence analysis shows that the Cs-g2e3 mRNA spans 6479 bp, encoding a 733 amino acid protein characterized by three conserved structural domains: PHD, RING, and HECT—typical of HECT E3 ubiquitin ligases. The predominant expression of Cs-g2e3 in the gonad tissues is further verified by qPCR. The expression profile of Cs-g2e3 in the gonads of the Chinese Tongue Sole is analyzed at different ages, and the results show that its expression peaks at 8 months of age and then begins to decline and stabilize. It is noteworthy that the expression level remains significantly elevated compared to that observed during the juvenile period. In situ hybridization shows that the mRNA of Cs-g2e3 is mainly localized in the germ cells of the ovary and the testis. RNA interference experiments show that the knockdown of Cs-g2e3 in ovarian and testicular germ cell lines significantly downregulates the expression of key genes involved in oogenesis (e.g., sox9 and cyp19a) and spermatogenesis (e.g., tesk1 and piwil2), respectively. Furthermore, the analysis of mutations in the transcription factor binding sites reveals that mutations within the Myogenin, YY1, and JunB binding sites significantly impact the transcriptional activity of the Cs-g2e3 gene, with the mutation in the YY1 binding site exhibiting the most pronounced effect (p < 0.001). This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the tissue-specific expression patterns of Cs-g2e3 across various tissues in Cynoglossus semilaevis, as well as the potential regulatory influences of transcription factors on its promoter activity. These findings may facilitate future research endeavors aimed at elucidating the expression and functional roles of the Cs-g2e3 gene. Full article

This paper investigates the impact of environmental regulations in the cities where enterprises are located on the technological complexity of exports from Chinese manufacturing companies. Currently, China is promoting high-quality development in foreign trade, which encompasses various aspects, including the enhancement of the technological content of export products. This study begins by examining the environmental regulations in the cities of enterprises and their effects on the technological content of exported products. It utilizes government work reports from various cities in China to evaluate the strength of environmental regulations in each city, subsequently analyzing their impact on the export technological complexity of Chinese manufacturing enterprises. Empirical results indicate that environmental regulations drive an increase in the technological complexity of exports from these enterprises, and this conclusion is validated through several robustness tests, including substitution variables and instrumental variable regression. Heterogeneity tests reveal that the effect of environmental regulations on export technological complexity is not significant for enterprises located in central cities compared to those in eastern and western cities. Furthermore, the export technological complexity of processing-trade enterprises and capital-intensive industries is not significantly influenced by environmental regulations. Additionally, the analysis of the moderating effect finds that a city’s innovation capacity plays a reinforcing role in the relationship between environmental regulations and the export technological complexity of enterprises. Based on these research findings, this paper offers corresponding recommendations from the perspective of environmental regulations to promote the high-quality development of China’s foreign trade. Very low energy diets (VLEDs) contain <800 kcal/day and typically comprise formulated meal replacement products with adequate protein and micronutrients. Food-based VLEDs are an alternative approach, but it is uncertain whether they can provide adequate nutrition within an 800 kcal/day restriction. This analysis aimed to assess the nutritional adequacy of food-based VLEDs compared with formula VLEDs. A systematized literature review was conducted to identify balanced food-based VLEDs by searching five scientific databases from inception to 23 March 2023 and online sources between 1 and 7 May 2023. Ultimately, nine diets were analyzed for nutritional content and compared with Codex Alimentarius standards for formula foods, and Australian estimated average requirement and adequate intake (AI) for adults 19–50 years. Optifast® was used as a comparator. None of the VLEDs met all nutritional benchmarks. Three food-based diets had nutrient profiles similar to formula VLEDs, with one being adequate for all nutrients except thiamine, magnesium and zinc in men and iron in women. All VLEDs, including Optifast®, did not meet AI for dietary fiber, except one. In general, food-based VLEDs offered more fiber than Optifast®. In conclusion, food-based VLEDs were inadequate in certain micronutrients but offered more dietary fiber than formula VLEDs. These nutritional deficits do not preclude food-based VLEDs from being recommended, provided they are addressed. Full article

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to assess the impact of monopolar electrocautery on the fetus during cesarean section. Materials and methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted with 552 patients delivered by cesarean section. Patients were grouped based on usage of monopolar electrocautery. In 272 patients, monopolar electrocautery was used to separate the tissues before the delivery. In 280 patients, no electrocautery was used. Newborn vital signs, Apgar scores, umbilical cord blood parameters, newborn serum parameters collected within 6th postpartum hour, and rate of newborn intensive care unit admission were compared. Results: The 1st and 5th minute Apgar scores were significantly higher in the electrocautery group; however, this difference lost its significance at the 10th minute. The median newborn pulse rate (148 (7) vs. 146 (6) beats per minute, p = 0.026), umbilical cord blood pH, and partial oxygen pressure were significantly higher in the electrocautery group compared to the no-electrocautery group (7.34 ± 0.06 vs. 7.31 ± 0.06, p < 0.001, and 25.5 (14.77) vs. 23 (16.08) mmHg, p = 0.025, respectively). The median umbilical cord blood serum calcium level was 1.51 (0.64) mmol/L in the electrocautery group, which was significantly lower than 1.9 (0.82) mmol/L in the no-electrocautery group (p = 0.002). The incidence of hypoglycemia was significantly lower in the electrocautery group than in the no-electrocautery group (2.2% vs. 5.7%, p = 0.035). Conclusions: Monopolar electrocautery during cesarean section affects the fetus, but it is safe to use it. Electrocautery is independently associated with umbilical cord blood pH and calcium level. Electrocautery may be associated with a lower incidence of hypoglycemia. Full article

This study evaluates the projected impact of climate change on wheat production in Northwest Tunisia, specifically at Medjez El Beb (36.67 m, 9.74°) and Slougia (36.66 m, 9.6°), for the period 2041–2070. Using the CNRM-CM5.1 and GFDL-ESM2M climate models under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, coupled with the AquaCrop and SIMPLE crop growth models, we compared model outputs with observed data from 2016 to 2020 to assess model performance. The objective was to determine how different climate models and scenarios affect wheat yields, biomass, and growth duration. Under RCP4.5, projected average yields are 7.709 q/ha with AquaCrop and 7.703 q/ha with GFDL-ESM2M. Under RCP8.5, yields are 7.765 tons/ha with AquaCrop and 7.198 q/ha with SIMPLE Crop, indicating that reduced emissions could improve wheat growth conditions. Biomass predictions showed significant variation: in Medjez El Beb, average biomass is 17.99 tons/ha with AquaCrop and 18.73 tons/ha with SIMPLE Crop under RCP8.5. In Slougia, average biomass is 18.90 tons/ha with AquaCrop and 19.04 tons/ha with SIMPLE Crop under the same scenario. Growth duration varied, with AquaCrop predicting 175 days in Medjez El Beb and 178 days in Slougia, while SIMPLE Crop predicted 180 days in Medjez El Beb and 182 days in Slougia, with a standard deviation of ±12 days for both models. SIMPLE Crop demonstrated higher accuracy in predicting growth cycle duration and yield, particularly in Slougia, with mean bias errors of −3.6 days and 2.26 q/ha. Conversely, AquaCrop excelled in biomass prediction with an agreement index of 0.97 at Slougia. Statistical analysis revealed significant yield differences based on climate models and emission scenarios, with GFDL-ESM2M under RCP4.5 showing more favorable conditions. These findings emphasize the importance of model selection and calibration for accurately projecting the agricultural impacts of climate change, and they provide insights for enhancing prediction accuracy and informing adaptation strategies for sustainable wheat production in Northwest Tunisia. Evaluating the reliability of deep soft rock tunnels is a very important issue to be solved. In this study, we propose a Monte Carlo simulation reliability analysis method (MCS–RAM) integrating the adaptive momentum stochastic optimization algorithm (Adam), Bayesian inference theory and Gaussian process regression (GPR) with combined kernel function, and we developed it in Python. The proposed method used the Latin hypercube sampling method to generate a dataset sample of geo-mechanical parameters, constructed combined kernel functions of GPR and used GPR to establish a surrogate model of the nonlinear mapping relationship between displacements and mechanical parameters of the surrounding rock. Adam was used to optimize the hyperparameters of the surrogate model. The Bayesian inference algorithm was used to obtain the probability distribution of geotechnical parameters and the optimal surrounding rock mechanical parameters. Finally, the failure probability was computed using MCS–RAM based on the optimized surrogate model. Through the application of an engineering case, the results indicate that the proposed method has fewer prediction errors and stronger prediction ability than Kriging or XGBoost, and it can significantly save computational time compared with the traditional polynomial response surface method. The proposed method can be used in the reliability analysis of all shapes of tunnels. Full article

Background: PIRADS score 3 represents a challenge in prostate cancer (PCa) detection with MRI. Our study aimed to evaluate the application of a nomogram on a cohort of patients with PIRADS 3. Methods: We analyzed 286 patients undergoing fusion prostate biopsy from January 2020 to February 2024. Only PIRADS 3 patients were included. Two nomograms, previously developed and based on clinical variables such as age, total PSA (specifically 2–10 ng/mL) and PSA ratio were applied to estimate the probability (Nomograms A and B) for PCa Grade Group (GG) > 3 and GG < 3. Results: Out of the 70 patients available for analysis, 14/70 patients (20%) had PCa, 4/14 were GG 1 (28.6%), 1/14 were GG 2 (7.1%), 5/14 were GG 3 (35.8%), 2/14 were GG 4 (14.3%) and 2/14 were GG 5 (14.3%). The median probability of PCa GG > 3 and GG < 3 was 5% and 33%, respectively. A significant difference (p = 0.033) was found between patients with negative versus positive biopsy for Nomogram B. There was a significant difference (p = 0.029) for Nomogram B comparing patients with GG < 3 and GG > 3. Using a cut-off of 40% for Nomogram B, sensitivity and specificity were 70% and 80%, respectively. Conclusions: This cohort has a low probability of harboring PCa especially ISUP > 3. Nomogram B has good accuracy for discriminating patients with PCa from those with negative biopsy. Full article

Biochar (B) has low nutrient content and is recalcitrant to biodegradation. Supplementing B with a fast-releasing nutrient source may improve soil fertility and physical conditions and increase crop productivity. A three-season field study was conducted on sandy loam and sandy clay loam textured soils to investigate the effect of B mixed with livestock manure (LM) on soil properties (pH, organic carbon (OC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), total Nitrogen (TN), available Phosphorus (Avail P)), and French bean yield (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in Rwanda. The study used a factorial randomized block design with four replications. Treatments comprised three levels of B (0, 1, and 3 t/ha) and three levels of LM (0, 1, and 3 t/ha). Biochar was used from S. sesban, G. sepium, A. angustissima, Eucalyptus, and Grevillea sp., prepared using a drum kiln, while LM was prepared using the pit method. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Tukey (HSD) function at p < 0.05, and linear mixed-effects model were performed in R software version 4.3.3 (R Core Team, 2024). The analysis showed that the treated plots significantly increased French bean yield compared to the control plots, with the highest value found in plots treated with 3 t/ha. The combined plots showed an increased yield compared to sole Biochar or manure. The seasonal increase has been observed, with percentage increases recorded as follows: 16%, 33.56%, 173.06% in sole B plots; 40.28%, 14.43%, and 11.76% in sole LM plots and 125%, 156%, and 209.8% in B + LM plots for season 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Furthermore, the results indicated that the application of B alone or combined with LM significantly enhanced soil pH, OC, TN, avail P, and CEC with the pH ranging from 6.77 to 5.43 for B alone, 6.7–5.35 for LM alone, 8.53–6.06 for B-LM plots, and 4.34–3.78 for control plots. Applying Biochar, either alone or in combination with LM, at a low rate demonstrated positive effects on French bean yield and soil nutrients in smallholder farmers. This study encourages using natural materials such as B and LM to improve soil fertility and increase vegetable production while reducing chemical fertilizers that can cause pollution and damage the environment.
