In recent years, with the increase in work intensity and the more complex working environment in the construction industry, the problem of job burnout among construction workers has become increasingly prominent. Job burnout not only affects workers’ physical health and work efficiency, leading to more serious safety hazards, but also deeply affects the well-being of construction workers. This study adopts an alternative perspective to explore the impact of professional sports event attendance on construction workers’ job burnout and to analyze the mediating role of leisure spillover in this process. Through a questionnaire survey of construction workers, 641 data points were collected for empirical statistical analysis. The results of the study show that the attention of construction workers’ sports career events can effectively reduce job burnout, and that leisure spillover plays a partial mediating role in this process. This study verifies the positive role of sports career events in promoting construction workers’ mental health through empirical analysis and provides practical references for occupational health management and the mental health development of construction worker groups. Background: With ever-increasing training, match-play and travel demands in professional soccer, recovery is vital for athletic performance, a statement amplified in tournament and in-season scenarios. However, alongside supporting the tasks associated with these increased demands, the recovery and wellbeing strategies recommended for playing staff are often unavailable to their support staff counterparts, who routinely experience extended working hours over and above scheduled player attendance. Methods: Focusing on the contributions of nutrition to this undoubtedly multifactorial issue, this narrative review aimed to (1) identify potential strategies to enhance recovery and wellbeing in multi-disciplinary soccer support staff and (2) highlight future research opportunities exploring the benefits of nutrition for those staff in soccer performance-related support roles. Results: The potential health and wellbeing consequences of chronic sub-optimal practices suggest that chrononutrition strategies may be an area of future interest. Notably, nutritional strategies that enhance sleep hygiene and immune function warrant consideration. Individualizing such strategies to maximize recovery and wellbeing in multi-disciplinary soccer support staff should offer an adjunct and complementary strategy to the holistic performance-focused support provided to professional soccer players. Conclusions: Policymakers responsible for organizational and club structures aligned with soccer performance could consider ‘Supporting the Support Staff’ when seeking to improve overall performance. The marine controlled source electromagnetic (MCSEM) transmitter can transmit high currents near the seabed to detect the electrical structure of the seafloor. The use of three-phase alternating current (AC) transmission can lead to three-phase imbalance, which results in an excessive current in one phase’s power line and affects the safety of the tow cable. This paper proposes an MCSEM underwater constant high-voltage direct-current (DC) switching scheme that replaces AC transmission with DC transmission. This scheme can fundamentally avoid three-phase imbalance and the AC loss caused by inductance. After establishing a simulation model to analyze the effect of the scheme, the relevant hardware units were designed. The hardware unit mainly consists of three parts: a DC switching inverter unit, a filter unit, and a step-down rectification unit. The DC inverter unit controls six insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) modules with sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) signals to convert DC to three-phase AC power; the filter unit filters out extra harmonic components; and the step-down rectification unit converts high-voltage three-phase AC to low-voltage DC. The scheme ultimately achieved an adjustable DC output of 48.3–73.4 V under a constant DC input voltage of 3000 V and effectively reduced the current on the cable. This scheme has the potential to replace the previous AC transmission, reducing the risk of tow cable burnout and enhancing the safety of MCSEM operations. Full article

The aims of this study were: (a) to explore the relationships between adaptive defense mechanisms (ADMs), maladaptive defense mechanisms (MADMs), stress, recovery, resilience, and sport burnout; and (b) to examine resilience, stress, and recovery as mediators of the relationship between defense mechanisms and burnout. One hundred and seventy-five athletes (M = 20.30 years, SD = 3.75) completed self-report questionnaires assessing defense mechanisms, resilience, stress, and recovery. Correlation analysis revealed that MADMs were positively associated with burnout, while ADMs had no significant link with burnout. Concerning mediation analysis, results showed a mediating effect of resilience in the relationship between ADMs and burnout. The findings also demonstrated a mediating effect of resilience and recovery in the relationship between MADMs and burnout. Our study highlighted that certain defenses categorized as adaptive might not be suitable in specific situations, thus underscoring the influence of mediating variables. The findings of mediation analysis demonstrated that resilience appears to serve as a particularly protective factor against burnout. On the contrary, MADMs would have a deleterious influence in the management of stress, which could lead to burnout. Coaches may consider fostering athletes’ resilience in conjunction with ADMs and implementing targeted psychological exercises to reduce the use of MADMs. Full article

Social work professionals experience high levels of burnout, emotional exhaustion, and secondary traumatic stress (STS). This paper reports the findings of a pilot test of the Burn-Not-Out programme that aimed to reduce social workers’ burnout, STS, and depressive symptoms and to enhance compassion satisfaction (CS), using the mixed methods evaluation methodology. Hong Kong social workers participated in the programme between December 2023 and March 2024 and completed pre- and post-programme self-administered online surveys including the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), healthy alongside self-constructed questions on boundary setting, and post-programme online focus group discussions. The results from 94 paired surveys revealed a concerning mental health profile of the participants at baseline, and, after programme participation, there were statistically significant reductions in burnout (Cohen’s d = 0.73) and depressive symptoms (Cohen’s d = 0.57) among the participants. The participants in the focus group reported that they valued the programme’s emphasis on healthy boundaries, one-on-one coaching, and the sense of being cared for, which contributed to their mental health improvement. This study highlights the urgent need for more research on the role of psychological capital in social workers’ resilience and calls for more empirical systemic interventions that can promote social workers’ mental wellness, with sustainable policies that ensure manageable workloads and adequate workplace support. Health systems around the world continue to experience healthcare workforce shortages, including shortages of nurses. This results in staff experiencing prolonged shifts and other stressors, which are linked to burnout, yet burned-out staff are then entrusted with the provision of patient care, despite healthcare facilities being regarded as safety-critical areas. It is assumed that the situation may have been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. This scoping review aims to identify the prevalence of burnout among nurses in Europe before and during the pandemic, the factors associated with this burnout, and its impact on patient safety. A literature search was conducted in the MEDLINE database; search terms included Nurse and Burnout and Patient Safety and their synonyms. The search limits used were English language, 2013 to 2023 publication years, original published research only (excluding review papers, dissertations, and unpublished reports), and studies conducted in European countries. A total of 16 papers were included for analysis: four indicated burnout levels of study participants, while 11 gave scores for individual burnout symptoms. Almost all studies indicated factors that were linked to burnout or individual dimensions of burnout. A few papers touched on the implications of these factors on patient safety. The review findings concluded that the few studies providing burnout levels on study participants could not give a clear picture of the burnout prevalence among nurses across Europe, either in general, before, or during the pandemic; therefore, this objective was not achieved and more research is required to establish this. Several factors thematically classified as sociodemographic, personal, organizational, and patient/client-related were linked to burnout. However, there were some contradictions in sociodemographic factors. Low personal accomplishment was the most common symptom of burnout before the pandemic, followed by emotional exhaustion and lastly depersonalization. Emotional exhaustion took the lead during the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by low personal accomplishment, and depersonalization remained the least common. More research is needed to establish the relationship between burnout and these factors. Full article

A conventional dual-winding (DW) motor has two internal windings consisting of a master part and a slave part, each connected to a different electronic control unit (ECU) to realize a redundant system. However, existing DW motors have a problem related to heat generation in both the healthy mode and the faulty mode of the motor operation. In the healthy mode, unexpected overloads can cause both windings to burn out simultaneously due to equal heat distribution. If the current sensor fails to measure correctly, the motor may exceed the designed current density of 4.7 [Arms/mm2] under air-cooling conditions, further increasing burnout risk. External factors such as excessive load cycles or extreme heat conditions can further exacerbate this issue. In the faulty mode, the motor requires double the current to generate maximum torque, leading to rapid temperature increases and a high risk of overheating. To address these challenges, this paper proposes the design of a thermal fault-tolerant asymmetric dual-winding (ADW) motor, which improves heat management in both healthy and faulty modes for autonomous vehicles. A lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN) with a piecewise stator-housing model (PSMs) was employed to evaluate the coil temperature during faulty operation. An optimal design approach, incorporating kriging modeling, Design of Experiments (DOE), and a genetic algorithm (GA), was also utilized. The results confirm that the proposed ADW motor design effectively reduces the risk of simultaneous burnout in the healthy mode and overheating in the faulty mode, offering a robust solution for autonomous vehicle applications. Teacher burnout is one of the main reasons leading to decreased teaching performance and occupational mental health issues among teachers, drawing widespread global attention. Previous research has found that both resiliency and psychological empowerment can alleviate teacher burnout, yet there is no study simultaneously examining the relationships between resiliency, PE, and teacher burnout. Furthermore, previous studies have found gender differences in teacher burnout but have not examined the moderating effects of resiliency and psychological empowerment by gender group. Additionally, traditional analytical methods may overlook the compositional connections between these variables. To bridge this gap, we employed psychological network analysis to evaluate the psychological network of teachers with burnout across different genders. Findings indicate: (1) Female teachers exhibit a stronger link between their sense of departmental control and burnout, while male teachers show a stronger connection between solving instructional challenges and burnout. (2) Patience in male teachers’ approach to teaching may enhance connections with their environment, and mastering job-relevant skills can boost male teachers’ job happiness. (3) Female teachers’ “I feel connected to others” demonstrates higher bridge centrality. In comparison, male teachers’ “My work is vital to me” shows higher bridge centrality, indicating deeper connections with other symptom clusters. This study reveals the complex interactions among the factors of teacher burnout and investigates how gender differences influence the associations between these factors and burnout, by not only filling gaps in previous research but also offering new perspectives and strategies for understanding and intervening in teacher burnout, especially in the context of gender differences. This study aimed to analyze the latent profiles of burnout and engagement of learners and to investigate differences between these profiles regarding demographic and contextual variables and academic boredom. The findings have practical implications for educators and professionals in the fields of education and psychology. Grade 9 and 10 South African learners (N = 544) studying English and Mathematics as school subjects participated in the study. Five learner burnout and engagement profiles were identified: healthy engaged (10.66%), moderately balanced (27.57%), slightly disengaged (30.7%), moderately burned-out (20.4%), and burned-out (10.66%). Academic boredom in Mathematics and English was linked to burnout-engagement profiles. The healthy engaged and moderately balanced profiles exhibited significantly lower academic boredom levels in both subjects than the other profiles. Positive relationships with teachers and interest in the subject were crucial across all profiles to diminish academic boredom and enhance engagement, especially in English. Various demographic and contextual variables were associated with burnout-engagement profiles. Home study environments, nurturing positive teacher-learner relationships, and fostering intrinsic interest in subjects can enhance engagement and mitigate burnout in secondary school learners. Sustainable interventions could be created by teachers or researchers, implemented by schools, and taken up in important policies within South Africa, showcasing how the SGDs of improved health and well-being and delivering quality education could be achieved. Burnout, characterized by emotional and physical exhaustion, poses a significant challenge to adolescent athletes, particularly in high-intensity sports like basketball. Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to manage emotions, which is negatively associated with burnout. Emotional labor, including strategies of surface acting (SA), deep acting (DA), and genuine expression (GE), plays a potentially key role in emotion management between EI and burnout for athletes. This study aims to investigate the relationship between EI and burnout, as well as the mediating role of emotional labor strategies among adolescent basketball players. Our cross-sectional study, conducted in youth sports schools in four different places in China, involved 260 basketball players. Results indicate a negative association between EI and burnout, with SA and GE emerging as significant mediators. SA was positively linked to burnout, while GE showed a negative association. These findings suggest that enhancing EI and managing emotional labor strategies are crucial for mitigating burnout and improving the well-being and performance of young athletes. Full article

The profession of airline pilots is characterized by high levels of stress and a significant risk of burnout. The health emergency period has exacerbated these challenges to health and well-being, with long COVID adding further strain to aviation professionals even in the post-pandemic scenario. In this context, it is essential to promote positive organizational behaviors to reconcile individual well-being with work performance. This study aimed to explore the mechanisms linking burnout to work performance behaviors (i.e., proficiency, adaptivity, and proactivity) among pilots, hypothesizing the mediating role of continuous learning behaviors. Based on the Conservation of Resources theory, we posited that burnout depletes pilots’ resources, thereby hindering continuous learning and reducing performance behaviors. Moreover, this study examined the work-related stress factors that could affect burnout and the consequences of performance behaviors on actual performance measured by a flight simulator. Data were collected from 123 pilots through an online survey and analyzed using path analysis. The results revealed that continuous learning mediated the relationship between burnout and work performance behaviors. Furthermore, work-related stress factors were significantly related to burnout, and work performance behaviors were linked to flight simulator performance. Our findings underscored the critical role of continuous learning in explaining the adverse effects of burnout on performance. These insights could inform targeted interventions to promote continuous learning and stress management among aviation professionals, ensuring sustained performance and well-being in the long term.
