In this study, the effect of rotary-die equal-channel angular pressing (RD-ECAP) on the microstructure and texture evolution of GW103 alloy is studied. RD-ECAP processes were carried out for 1, 4 and 12 passes at 450 °C. The mechanical properties and friction behavior of RD-ECAP-processed Mg-10Gd-3Y (wt%) alloy (GW103) are discussed. The results reveal that the size of dynamic recrystallized grains and second-phase particles are significantly refined to about 1.3 μm and 1 μm, respectively. The texture evolution of the processed samples is studied by X-ray diffraction and electron backscattered diffraction techniques. The multiple texture components formed are not observed after the conventional ECAP process. Moreover, different dynamic recrystallization (DRX) mechanisms are systemically analyzed and discussed in view of the texture evolution of ECAP processed samples. The final textures obtained after 12 passes are identified as two types: The C-texture type induced by continuous and discontinuous DRX, and the random texture components induced by reorientation of the initial <101¯0> fiber. Based on the grain refinement, precipitate strengthening and texture weakening mechanisms, a high-performance ternary alloy of Mg-Gd-Y was firstly obtained through 12 passes RD-ECAP processing, with a combination of high yield strength of 312 MPa and a high ductility of 22%. In addition, the friction behaviors are also studied. The multi-pass-processed samples exhibit a relatively lower friction coefficient under a load of 10 N at room temperature. Full article

In this study, the influence of rotary-die equal channel angular pressing (RD-ECAP) processing on the mechanical properties and rolling formability of AZ91 alloys was investigated. The as-cast and pre-homogenized AZ91 alloys were pre-processed by RD-ECAP for 16 passes at 573 K and subjected to post-ECAP rolling at 573 K with a rolling speed of 10 m/min. The microstructure and deformation characteristics of the AZ91 alloys were characterized. Results demonstrated that fine-grained AZ91 alloys with improved strength and ductility were obtained via the high-pass RD-ECAP processing, indicating a good plastic formability. The ECAP-ed alloys were easily rolled at 573 K from 4.5 mm to 1.1 mm in thickness without edge cracking. After rolling, heterogeneous grain structures were observed with large numbers of twins and shear bands that created strong basal textures. The rolled AZ91 alloys exhibited higher tensile strength and appropriate elongation. The post-ECAP rolling was successfully used in the high productivity of AZ91 rolled plates with good mechanical properties. Full article

Tailoring the morphology and distribution of the Al2Ca second phase is important for improving mechanical properties of Al2Ca-containing Mg-Al-Ca based alloys. This work employed the industrial-scale multi-pass rotary-die equal channel angular pressing (RD-ECAP) on an as-cast Mg-3.7Al-1.8Ca-0.4Mn (wt %) alloy and investigated its microstructure evolution and mechanical properties under three different processing parameters. The obtained results showed that RD-ECAP was effective for refining the microstructure and breaking the network-shaped Al2Ca phase. With the increase of the ECAP number and decrease of the processing temperature, the average sizes of Al2Ca particles decreased obviously, and the dispersion of the Al2Ca phase became more uniform. In addition, more ECAP passes and lower processing temperature resulted in finer α-Mg grains. Tensile test results indicated that the 573 K-12p alloy with the finest and most dispersed Al2Ca particles exhibited superior mechanical properties with tensile yield strength of 304 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 354 MPa and elongation of 10.3%. The improved comprehensive mechanical performance could be attributed to refined DRX grains, nano-sized Mg17Al12 precipitates and dispersed Al2Ca particles, where the refined and dispersed Al2Ca particles played a more dominant role in strengthening the alloys. Relatively low compactness and unsatisfactory uniformity of reinforced particles severely restrict the performance and widespread industry applications of the powder metallurgy (PM) metal matrix composites (MMCs). Here, we developed a combined processing route of PM and equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) to enhance the mechanical properties and wear resistance of the SiCp/Al-Si composite. The results indicate that ECAP significantly refined the matrix grains, eliminated pores and promoted the uniformity of the reinforcement particles. After 8p-ECAP, the SiCp/Al-Si composite consisted of ultrafine Al matrix grains (600 nm) modified by uniformly-dispersed Si and SiCp particles, and the composite relative density approached 100%. The hardness and wear resistance of the 8p-ECAP SiCp/Al-Si composite were markedly improved compared to the PM composite. More ECAP passes continued a trend of improvement for the wear resistance and hardness. Moreover, while abrasion and delamination dominated the wear of PM composites, less severe adhesive wear and fatigue mechanisms played more important roles in the wear of PM-ECAP composites. This study demonstrates a new approach to designing wear-resistant Al-MMCs and is readily applicable to other Al-MMCs. Full article

Fabrication of an Ultra-Fine Grained Pure Titanium with High Strength and Good Ductility via ECAP plus Cold Rolling

Microstructure evolutions and mechanical properties of a commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti, grade 2) during multi-pass rotary-die equal-channel angular pressing (RD-ECAP) and cold rolling (CR) were systematically investigated in this work, to achieve comprehensive property for faster industrial applications. The obtained results showed that the grain size of CP-Ti decreased from 80 μm of as-received stage to 500 nm and 310 nm after four passes and eight passes of ECAP, respectively. Moreover, abundant dislocations were observed in ECAP samples. After subsequent cold rolling, the grain size of ECAPed CP-Ti was further refined to 120 nm and 90 nm, suggesting a good refining effect by combination of ECAP and CR. XRD (X-ray diffractometer) analysis and TEM (transmission electron microscope) observations indicated that the dislocation density increased remarkably after subsequent CR processing. Room temperature tensile tests showed that CP-Ti after ECAP + CR exhibited the best combination of strength and ductility, with ultimate tensile strength and fracture strain reaching 920 MPa and 20%. The high strength of this deformed CP-Ti originated mainly from refined grains and high density of dislocations, while the good ductility could be attributed to the improved homogeneity of UFG (ultra-fine grained) microstructure. Thus, a high strength and ductility ultra-fine grained CP-Ti was successfully prepared via ECAP plus CR. Full article

Pure titanium was efficiently processed up to four passes at 420 °C by rotary-die equal-channel angular pressing (RD-ECAP). The deformation structure and mechanical properties of pure titanium with various RD-ECAP passes were subsequently investigated. Microstructure evolution revealed that plastic deformation was accommodated mainly by twins during the first and second passes, while the predominant deformation mechanism was dislocation slip during the third and fourth passes. { 10 1 ¯ 2 } twins were detected in the first pass, and { 10 1 ¯ 1 } twins occurred in the second pass of RD-ECAP. The ultimate tensile strength of pure titanium increased from 450 MPa in the as-received state to 627 MPa with a fracture elongation of 29% after four passes of RD-ECAP. Full article
