The Chinese pearleaf crabapple tree, belonging to the Rosaceae family and with the scientific name Malus asiatica, bears fruits that serve as both food and medicine. The Horqin Right Wing Front Banner is a critical node for ecological security in the northern border regions of China, exerting significant influence on ecological health in China. Additionally, the resources in this region are limited, and residents have historically relied solely on maize cultivation for sustenance. Therefore, local measures combining ecological conservation and economic development have been implemented in vigorously promoting the Chinese pearleaf crabapple industry. Hence, it is necessary to study the ecological suitability of the local Chinese pearleaf crabapple. In this study, 15 evaluation indicators are employed for this purpose, with the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) used to calculate single-factor weights. Additionally, GIS is utilized to establish membership functions for achieving dimensionless evaluation indicators, as well as a weighted index and model used to compute comprehensive suitability scores. Using the natural breakpoint method, the overall scores were categorized into five groups: most suitable, more suitable, barely suitable, unsuitable, and not applicable. The validation of zoning results includes verification of existing planting locations and conducting principal component analysis of the characteristics and yield of Chinese pearleaf crabapple to ensure the accuracy of the zoning. It is found that the validation results are generally consistent with the zoning results. The results indicate that the most suitable, more suitable, suitable, barely suitable, and unsuitable represent 16.49%, 32.07%, 30.36%, 14.52%, and 6.55% of the total zoning area, respectively. These findings can be applied to land use planning and in expanding the planting area of Chinese pearleaf crabapple. Full article

A New Strategy to Solve “the Tragedy of the Commons” in Sustainable Grassland Ecological Compensation: Experience from Inner Mongolia, China

Based on the principle of “who protects and benefits will compensate”, in recent years, many Chinese herders have begun to voluntarily participate in sustainable grassland ecological compensation by donating money. However, this traditional strategy may have brought about “the tragedy of the commons”. A new strategy described as “wealthy herders pay money, ordinary herders participate in supervision, and relevant departments post a list of participants at the end of each month”, which was trialed in the Keshiketeng Banner, Inner Mongolia, China, attempts to solve “the tragedy of the commons”. This new strategy is neither “Leviathan” nor “Privatization”; it creates a third way for grassland herders to achieve spontaneous cooperation in protecting grassland ecology. This article presents a theoretical analysis framework and experimental simulation method using this new strategy. Considering the importance of face culture and gossip in herders’ social lives, this study used a public goods game (PGG) model to analyze and experimentally simulate the effect of this new strategy. The simulated data show the following: (1) Compared with the traditional strategy, this new strategy promotes cooperation more effectively. It requires less money, time and human capital from herders and can mobilize more herders to participate in sustainable grassland ecological compensation, leading to the emergence of a cooperation equilibrium among herders. (2) In this new strategy, the total contributions of herders are inversely proportional to herders’ “reputation tolerance”, and they are directly proportional to herders’ “income level”, “total budget” and “satisfaction and emotion”. The cooperation level is inversely proportional to “reputation tolerance” and “income level” and directly proportional to “total budget” and “satisfaction and emotion”. (3) The advantage of this new strategy is that it is robust to changes in the exogenous coefficient. Our research contributes to the application of the PGG model in the sustainable development of various resources and developing new approaches to mitigating “the tragedy of the commons”. Full article

In cashmere production studies, few trials have considered the guard hair features and their correlation with down fiber attributes. In this preliminary work, early observations on 158 one year old Chinese Alashan Left Banner White Cashmere goats were carried out. The aim was to describe the phenotypic correlation between the guard hair length and other fiber traits. The guard hair length was positively correlated with guard hair diameter and the down fiber length. Negative correlations were found between guard hair length and the coefficient of variation of guard hair diameter, between the guard hair diameter and its coefficient of variation, and between the down fiber diameter and the coefficient of variation of down fiber diameter. The body weight at first combing was not correlated with any of the other traits. Full article

With the quick advancement of new generation information technologies like the Internet, big data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and blockchain, digitalization is emerging as a crucial tool for restructuring factor resources, reshaping the economic landscape, and altering competitiveness. However, there is no literature on the impact and mechanism of digitalization on environmental pollution management. Thus, this study measured the level of digital development in each province using principal component analysis based on panel data of 30 Chinese provinces during 2006–2019. On this basis, the impact of digitalization on haze and its mechanisms were explored using regression models and mediating effect models, respectively. The findings demonstrate that (1) haze pollution may be reduced through digital progresses, and there is an inverse U-shaped non-linear link between them, that is, as digital technology is refined, its impact on haze pollution shifts from facilitation to suppression; (2) digital development can reduce haze pollution by promoting technological innovation and improving the efficiency of environmental management; and (3) there is regional heterogeneity in the influence of digitalization on air pollution. In heavily polluted areas, the suppression effect of digital technology on air pollution is more than three times that of other areas. The goal of this study is to investigate how digitalization affects haze pollution and its mechanisms, as well as to offer some scientific guidance for China’s efforts to build a “Digital China” under the banner of digitalization. Chinese pine has tremendous applications in many fields. Mapping the distribution of Chinese pine is of great importance for government decision-making and forest management. In order to extract Chinese pine on a large scale, efficient algorithms and open remote-sensing datasets are needed. It is widely believed that machine learning algorithms and medium-resolution remote-sensing datasets can work well for this purpose. Unfortunately, their performance for Chinese pine extraction has remained unclear until now. Therefore, this study aims to explore the ability of the different machine learning algorithms and open remote-sensing datasets for Chinese pine extraction over large areas on Google Earth Engine (GEE). So, based on the combination of three typical machine learning algorithms, namely deep neural network (DNN), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and three open medium-resolution remote-sensing datasets, namely Sentinel-2, Gaofen-1, and Landsat-8 OLI, 27 models are constructed and GEE, with its powerful computing ability, is used. The main findings are as follows: (1) DNN has the highest accuracy for Chinese pine extraction, followed by SVM and RF; DNN is more sensitive to spatial geometric information, while SVM and RF algorithms are more sensitive to spectral information. (2) Spectral indexes are helpful for improving the extraction accuracy of Chinese pine. The extraction accuracy by using Gaofen-1 dataset increases 7.6% after adding spectral indexes, while the accuracies by using Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 datasets increase 1.8% and 1.9% after adding spectral indexes, respectively. (3) The extraction accuracy by using DNN and Sentinel-2 dataset with spectral indexes is the highest, with an overall accuracy of 94.4%. (4) The area of Chinese pine is 153.73 km2, accounting for 5.06% of the administrative area of Karaqin Banner, and it is convenient to extract Chinese pine on a large scale by using GEE. Full article

The Impact of China’s Grassland Ecological Compensation Policy on the Income Gap between Herder Households? A Case Study from a Typical Pilot Area

China’s policy of subsidies and rewards for grassland ecological protection (PSRGEP) aims to maintain the ecological function of grasslands and increase the income of herder households. Since 2011, the Chinese government has invested more than 150 billion yuan in this policy, making it currently the largest grassland ecological compensation project in China. Based on a survey of 203 herder households in Xin Barag Left Banner, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, this study used the Lorenz curve and Gini index to describe the imbalance in the distribution of compensation funds. Then, the integrated livelihood capital scores before compensation were used as a baseline. The changes in ranking and standard deviation of the scores after receiving compensation funds were analysed to draw a conclusion about the impact on the income gap between herder households. Finally, we described the absolute income gap through a group comparison. The results show that the distribution of compensation funds is unbalanced (Gini index is 0.46). According to the order of compensation funds from high to low, the top 20% of sample herder households received 49% of the total funds. Given the unbalanced distribution, households with better family economic conditions received more compensation funds. After receiving the compensation funds, the change in the ranking of the household’s livelihood capital integrated score was small, but the standard deviation increased from 0.1697 to 0.1734, and the Gini index of the households’ capital integrated scores decreased from 0.35 to 0.34 (the coefficient of variation decreased from 0.66 to 0.63). The group with the highest integrated livelihood capital score received 3.6 times the compensation funds of the group with the lowest score. As a result, under the promotion of PSRGEP, the local absolute income gap has widened, but the relative income gap has reduced. This study evaluated the current distribution of compensation funds for PSRGEP, which could provide a scientific basis for managers to optimize the fund distribution in the future. Full article

Northern China has been long threatened by aeolian desertification. In recent years, all levels of the Chinese government have performed a series of ecological protection and sand control projects. To grasp the implementation effects of these projects and adjust policies in time, it is necessary to understand the process of aeolian desertification quickly and accurately. Remote sensing technologies play an irreplaceable role in aeolian desertification monitoring. In this study, the Zhenglan Banner, which is in the hinterland of the Hunshandake Sandy Land, was considered as the research area. Based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images, ground survey data, and Landsat images called in Google Earth Engine (GEE), the aeolian desertified land (ADL) in 2000, 2004, 2010, 2015, and 2019 was extracted using spectral mixture analysis. A desertification index (DI) was constructed to evaluate the spatial and temporal dynamics of the ADL in the Zhenglan Banner. Finally, a residual analysis explored the driving forces of aeolian desertification. The results showed that (1) the ADL area in the Zhenglan Banner has been trending downwards over the past 20 years but rebounded from 2004 to 2010; (2) over the past 20 years, the area of slightly, moderately, and severely desertified land has decreased at annual rates of 0.4%, 2.7%, and 3.4%, respectively; (3) human activities had significantly positive and negative impacts on the aeolian desertification trend for 20.0% and 21.0% of the study area, respectively, but not for the rest. This paper explored new techniques for rapid aeolian desertification monitoring and is of great significance for controlling and managing aeolian desertification in this region. Full article

As a crucial element of China’s political and cultural life, “banners”, or biāoyǔ, have been around for decades, in support of national-level policies such as family planning and the governing mottos of Presidents. The banners that have emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic which was also the subject of a national-level driven policy, have been involved in a nation-wide public debate over the language styles of banners used to urge people to stay indoors. Based on the analysis of the early COVID-19 banners and the related online comments, this article analyzes the language style patterns of the banners and the mode of banner circulation. The study found that the manner in which the banners are circulated goes beyond a unidirectional path of on-site instant communication. This process is facilitated by social networks and mass media, which, during circulation, twice created a banner upgrade. The upgrades created decontextualization and function extension of the banners, whereas audience feedback triggered an adaptive adjustment of the language style of the banners. This article suggests that the study of the use and spread of banners, especially the early COVID-19 banners, sheds light on the study of mass communication and discourse style, and also how measures to contain pandemics such as COVID-19 can be communicated.
