According to a recent joint report by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and UN Women, there have been some advances towards gender equality globally since the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015—but there's still a long way to go. And the time to act is now. Read additional takeaways from Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The Gender Snapshot 2024, ICYMI: https://lnkd.in/evZxY3xw

Multiple mpox outbreaks now have the world’s attention. In August, the World Health Organization declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern. Cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and several neighboring countries increased by 300 percent in the past year—with more children infected than in previous outbreaks. While most recover from the painful infection, some become severely ill, and hundreds of people have died. In our latest blog, Deputy Director Jennifer Alcorn highlights how researchers in Africa are using genetic sequencing and pathogen surveillance to understand how the virus is evolving and where it is impacting communities most, and how Gates Philanthropy Partners is investing in building resilient health systems capable of responding to crises like this. https://lnkd.in/e-zwWRdr

Investing in women and girls has been proven to tackle poverty. Yet too many girls and women are denied an equal chance to learn, lead, earn, and thrive. That's why we established our Empowerment & Opportunity fund. If we remove barriers through efforts like increasing access to family planning or putting financial tools in the hands of more women, we know we can ignite potential. Residents in Bend, Oregon are coming together as a "citizens assembly" to help their community's unhoused youth. "Putting power in the hands of citizen assemblies is a popular idea in Europe. It hasn’t found nearly as much traction in the United States, but advocates hope it can be a salve for the country’s toxic division." The Chronicle of Philanthropy offers a look at how citizens assemblies work and why this particular experiment in Oregon has received more than $250,000 in grants: https://lnkd.in/gRbjN_EQ

CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Working to ensure everyone can live a healthy life & reach their full potential. Father, husband, optimist.
Today, we’re proud to release the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s latest white paper on climate and development. It offers a clear path for aligning investments to help the world’s poorest countries make faster, smarter progress toward shared global goals. The paper highlights how countries can tackle three imperatives: development, climate adaptation, and climate mitigation. By matching the right type of financing to the right investments, we can maximize impact, no matter the country's distinct needs. Take Ethiopia, a nation that has made remarkable strides but is now struggling under multiple crises—from climate shocks to health emergencies. For such countries, we need new approaches to funding—approaches that don’t pit climate action against human development. This paper outlines a blueprint for policymakers, donors, and institutions to work together, ensuring that resources are directed where they’ll make the most difference. It’s not just about funding more—it’s about funding better. https://lnkd.in/eaqf2GRb #GlobalDevelopment #ClimateFinance #DevelopmentFinance
