Electric vehicles

The NSW EV Strategy is our plan to make NSW the easiest place to own and operate an EV in Australia.

Under the Strategy, drivers will have access to a world-class road network of ultra-fast charging stations, and we’ll support motorists to make their next vehicle an EV.

Turbo-charging the NSW electric vehicle market

EVs are high performing vehicles that are cheaper to run, quieter on the road and reduce both air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

The NSW EV Strategy is our plan to make NSW the easiest place to own and operate an EV in Australia. Under the Strategy, drivers will have access to a world-class road network of ultra-fast charging stations, and we’ll support motorists to make their next vehicle an EV.

Driving change in EV charging and fleets

Charging infrastructure

Guaranteed widespread EV charging across NSW is a priority with dedicated investment in the NSW EV strategy. This means EV drivers can be confident of the network of chargers to drive their vehicles whenever and wherever they need to.

This investment includes co-funding for:

Ultra-fast charging infrastructure

  • EV Super-Highways – co-investing in ultra-fast chargers at minimum 100km intervals across all major NSW highways – creating ‘EV Super-Highways’ across the State. This will support regional residents and businesses to share the benefits of EVs by improving their access to charging infrastructure and encouraging more city-based EV drivers to travel to regional areas, boosting local tourism.
  • EV Commuter Corridors – will ensure that households right across Sydney have no more than 5km to drive to the next ultra-fast EV charger, creating ‘EV Commuter Corridors’ right across the city.
  • EV off-street parking chargers - will support private industry to build new ultra-fast EV charging infrastructure in areas where drivers are not able to access private off-street parking - about 30% of drivers. This means households with limited off-street parking will live no more than 5km from a fast or ultra-fast charger under the Strategy.

Right now we are calling on site operators and owners to register their interest to host public EV fast charging sites. We will then create connections with charging providers that apply for funding to install and operate EV charging stations at identified sites. We’re particularly interested in optimal zones shown on the interactive NSW EV fast charging master plan.

Kerbside parking

Providing access to on-street EV charging for those without private car parking spots. This will help EV owners in high density areas by the co-funding of 500 kerbside charging options to ensure ease of access, convenience and flexibility.

Commuter EV charging

Will help develop destination charging infrastructure in or near commuter carparks and other popular Transport for NSW sites.

The location of the chargers will encourage drivers to use public transport and other modes of transport as part of their commute. This will take more vehicles off congested roads, ensure a more seamless connection between different journey modes and tackle the first mile/last mile challenge many countries face.

Tourist EV charging routes

Will help develop destination charging infrastructure at regional tourist locations, such as motels, restaurants, wineries and other points of interest.

EV fleets incentive

Fleet buyers are important participants in the vehicle market in NSW, making up a large portion of annual new vehicle sales. They often drive more kilometres and have higher expenses for fuel and maintenance, when compared to vehicles used privately. This represents a huge opportunity for fleet operators to reduce their emissions and save around $3,100 in running costs per vehicle, per year by switching to EVs.

We are investing $105 million to help NSW private businesses, not-for-profits and local councils accelerate their transition to EVs.

Making buildings ‘EV-ready’

Guidance on upgrading existing buildings

Not many existing buildings currently accommodate EV charging. To help, owners, managers, occupants and strata managers design, retrofit and wire ‘EV readiness’ into apartment and commercial buildings, we have developed helpful guidance materials and tools.

Apartment building upgrades

There’s $10 million available to assist eligible NSW apartment buildings by co-funding the assessment and installation of EV infrastructure upgrades. This funding is available through the EV ready buildings grant.
