"Start!" is the eleventh UK single release by punk rock band, The Jam and their second number-one, following "Going Underground"/"Dreams of Children". Upon its release on 15 August 1980, it debuted at number three, and two weeks later reached number one for one week. Written by Paul Weller and produced by Vic Coppersmith-Heaven and The Jam, "Start!" was the lead single from the band's fifth album Sound Affects. The single's B-side is "Liza Radley".

"Start!" is based on both the main guitar riff and bass riff of The Beatles' 1966 song "Taxman" from the album Revolver, written by George Harrison. Likewise, The Jam's "Dreams of Children" had featured the same "Taxman" bassline, played then as a lead guitar riff.

The album version of the song runs at 2:30 and features trumpets in the final section. The single version, also featured on the "Snap!" compilation, is edited and slightly remixed, and omits the trumpets.

    Other versions and sampling

Beastie Boys covered the song, which appears on their 1999 single, "Alive".

    Start (Soviet camera)

Start (Russian: Старт, transliterated Cmapm) was a 35 mm single lens reflex Soviet camera produced by Mechanical Factory of Krasnogorsk (KMZ) during the years of 1958–1964. The camera was inspired by Exakta camera. Start had Bayonet-mount lenses with Exakta-style shutter release arm, KMZ Helios-44 58 mm f/2 normal lens, cloth focal-panel shutter.

An improved version, Start-2, was produced ca. 1963–1964. It had automatic diaphragm and meteric prism.

  • Select (album)

Select is the second studio album by Kim Wilde, released on May 10, 1982 via RAK label.

    Overview

The first single from this album, "Cambodia", was released in November 1981 and signalled a different sound from the Wilde camp, with an electronic and synth sound different from The Enid sound of her last album. The songs were again written by Marty and Ricky Wilde and produced by Ricky Wilde. The lyrics of the songs were similar to the first album: the second single "View from a Bridge" and the album track "Wendy Sadd" seemed to be about suicide, "Chaos at the Airport" described a nightmare about flying and "Ego" was quite the opposite of a lovesong. "Can You Come Over" was recorded at the Wilde's home. The cover image was a photograph from Gered Mankowitz.

This sequel to the debut album topped the charts in a host of European countries and hit #8 in Australia — although it did not surpass the success of its predecessor. The album was certified Silver in the UK.

    Select (magazine)

Select was a United Kingdom music magazine of the 1990s which was particularly known for covering Britpop, a term coined in the magazine by Stuart Maconie. Its 1993 "Yanks Go Home" edition, featuring The Auteurs, Denim, Saint Etienne, Pulp and Suede's Brett Anderson on the cover in front of a Union Flag, was an important impetus in defining the movement's opposition to American genres such as grunge.

The magazine launched in 1990 and folded a decade later in 2000, mirroring the rise and decline of the Britpop scene with which it became synonymous.

    Selcall

Selcall (selective calling) is a type of squelch protocol used in radio communications systems, in which transmissions include a brief burst of sequential audio tones. Receivers that are set to respond to the transmitted tone sequence will open their squelch, while others will remain muted.

Selcall is a radio signalling protocol mainly in use in Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and continues to be incorporated in radio equipment marketed in those areas.

    Details

The transmission of a selcall code involves the generation and sequencing of a series of predefined, audible tones. Both the tone frequencies, and sometimes the tone periods, must be known in advance by both the transmitter and the receiver. Each predefined tone represents a single digit. A series of tones therefore represents a series of digits that represents a number. The number encoded in a selcall burst is used to address one or more receivers. If the receiver is programmed to recognise a certain number, then it will un-mute its speaker so that the transmission can be heard; an unrecognised number is ignored and therefore the receiver remains muted.

Who's going to tell me I'm wrong
    When I'm careless
Who's going to pick out my flaws
When you do it so well
Everyone says to get over it
    Oh I know I should
    But I'm losing my cool
Yes, I'm losing it all to you
Hoping the best will get better
    Maybe I'm not right
    But I'll be just fine
    Back home without you
    We'll make brand new friends
    I've been proud of you
Since you got out of this town alive
    Write down my name
On a post card next summer
    Read black and white
    Like a paperback cover
    I'm on your mind
Til the years pass us by
    Hold me, touch me,
Never let me go until I'm gone
