Euro Area Jobless Rate Stays at Record Low of 6.3%
The unemployment rate in the Euro Area was at 6.3% in September of 2024, holding at its lowest on record, and slightly below market forecasts of 6.4%. The number of unemployed individuals decreased by 13 thousand from the prior month to 10.884 million. The youth unemployment rate, reflecting those under 25 seeking employment, ticked up to 14.4% in September from an upwardly revised 14.3% in the prior month. Among the major Euro Area economies, Spain still showed the highest unemployment rate at 11.2%, followed by France at 7.6% and Italy at 6.1%. In contrast, Germany reported the lowest rate at 3.5%. A year earlier, the jobless rate was higher at 6.6%.

Euro Area Unemployment Rate Holds at Record Low
The unemployment rate in the Euro Area was unchanged from the prior month at 6.4% in August of 2024, holding at its lowest on record, and in line with market expectations. The result extended the period of resilience in the bloc’s labor market, holding up to the historical monetary tightening by the ECB. The number of unemployed individuals decreased by 94 thousand people from the previous month to 10.925 million. Additionally, the youth unemployment rate, reflecting those under 25 years of age who are seeking employment, eased to 14.1%, which equates to 2.231 million individuals. Unemployment was the highest in Spain (11.3%), Greece (9.5%), Sweden (8.4%), and Finland (8.3%). On the other hand, the jobless rate was the lowest for Poland (2.9%), Malta (3%), Slovenia (3.3%), and Germany (3.5%).

The number of unemployed individuals decreased by 114 thousand from the prior month to 10.990 million. Additionally, the youth unemployment rate, reflecting those under 25 seeking employment, was 14.2% in July, the lowest since June 2023, down slightly from 14.4% in the previous month. Among the major Euro Area economies, Spain still faces the highest unemployment rate at 11.5%, followed by France at 7.5% and Italy at 6.5%. In contrast, Germany reported the lowest rate at 3.4%. A year earlier, the jobless rate was slightly higher at 6.6%.
