How Enhanced Weathering works

Enhanced weathering (EW) leverages and accelerates the Earth's natural process of silicate rock weathering, a fundamental mechanism in the global carbon cycle that has regulated atmospheric concentrations of CO2 on Earth for millions of years. This process involves the reaction of silicate minerals, such as those found in basalt, with carbon dioxide (CO2) and water, to remove  CO2.

EW significantly accelerates the rate of CO2 uptake by utilizing silicate rocks in fine form, which have exponentially increased surface area. When applied to soils, these particles react with CO2 dissolved in rainwater and soil moisture, forming dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) species, mainly bicarbonate (HCO3-). These dissolved weathering products flow out of the soil surface and are then transported through groundwater pathways to rivers and ultimately to the ocean where they are stably stored for thousands of  years.

  • Our MRV is based on the most advanced scientific knowledge. We have partnered with leading EW practitioners and academic institutions to keep up with the latest research .

  • We analyze multiple agronomical and geochemical soil parameters complemented with pore water analyses to trace the fate of weathering products and accurately account for system losses.

  • We collect geo-referenced and geo-stamped evidence across all our operations to document all the activities that lead to carbon removal.

  • We monitor CO2eq. emissions throughout our operations and subtracted them from gross removal estimates to accurately report net CO2 removal.
