One of the downsides of the internet is that these people can find each other with their mental illness and get not therapy, but validation.

Honestly this is more concerning to me than making me want to make fun of them. These people may be crazy, but they’ve formed an emotional attachment to something attempting to simulate a human, that’s normal human behavior, done to an abnormal degree. These people are clearly struggling against the alienation in our society and seeking the comfort they can in a way that doesn’t hurt anyone. I can sympathize with that, it’s no different to me than hikkomori or a nerdy guy who’s gotten too into a hobby because he’s given up on finding a girlfriend or close friendships.

Maybe seeing them express feeling the need to hide what they’re doing and going through to avoid mockery just hits me deep in the traumatic personal experiences.

Like, I really don’t think this is a healthy coping mechanism, and I think they’re opening themselves up to a lot of unnecessary vulnerability, but I suspect mockery will only further alienate them.

I understand people don’t like ai, and you certainly won’t see me in the ranks of AI advocates, but please don’t belittle their emotional states- remember that humans can get incredibly attached to even rocks, let alone something that speaks back to you.

Yeah these people are literally victims of an intentional system to make people pay for more openai subs. I have no idea if they knew exactly what would happen but they had to know how addictive 4o was and that addiction would translate to whales paying for max tier subs to the detriment of everything else in their lives.

I don’t know who is belittling them. The same way I feel bad for a person screaming on the street, this post is a fucking bummer.

The person screaming on the street is crazy. These people are just selfish. The AI tells them everything they want to hear and makes them feel good, unlike humans who will sometimes criticize them and make them feel bad. So, they’ve opted to spend their time with the AI instead.

I can’t tell of they’re just trolling or actually mentally ill. Also what is worse about the newer versions compared to 4? I’ve barely used it since it came out

Most complaints are that chatgpt 5 is 10% less sycophantic, and will push back sometimes. Horrible, if you are using it as an interactive Waifu or need something to speed up your psychotic break.

More focus on computation than interaction and language, if I understand it right. So more clippy than chat bot.

They are mentally ill. It’s fucking sad and a horrible situation, just look at how their delusions go overboard the actual problem (which they don’t realise).

There’s no current help for this newly created illness.

The fact it’s so overboard is why I thought maybe at least some of them may be trolling, but sadly I think you’re right and a lot if not all of them genuinely feel that way.

I’m not sure if it counts as a new illness or not, but I can’t imagine a disinformation machine that agrees with everything you say does any good for anyone with an existing condition

€10 says that some ELIZA shit will be in the ICD-12.

But yeah, probably not new, just a different tentacle of the mental distress octopus.

I wish they’d realize this is gonna keep happening to them over and over.
"Altman said he wouldn’t retire the m— cmon now, of course he would. If not because he has a bigger and better model to sell, because he managed to make a easier-to-run version of the old one.
These people are just opening themselves to endless heartache at the hands of these companies, as if they didn’t have enough ways to manipulate us already.

Does the new versions “speak” differently or is it just projection on their part? Sorry if my question is stupid, but i almost never used LLMs.

Do AI chatbots “remember” previous interactions? Like, I know they do in the context of one dialogue. But when people have these “relationships” over weeks or months does the conversation build on everything that’s been said before?
