Evil Geniuses, often abbreviated as EG, is one of the oldest North American professional gaming organisations. Founded in 1999, EG is known to have highly successful players in every competitive game they feature and is considered by many to be one of the most premier gaming organisations that exist today. EG was previously a member of the G7 Teams association. In 2015, it became the first North American based organization to win The International. Their Dota 2 team has been based in North America since its inception before moving to South America in late 2022.

  • October 24th - Evil Geniuses announces their new Dota 2 division.[1]
  • February 21st - Evil Geniuses welcomes their new squad.[9]
  • May 28th - After several weeks of inactivity due to a wrist injury, Fear transitions into a coaching position.[10]
  • June 2nd - mason joins as Fear's replacement.[11]
  • July 28th - mason is removed from the team.[12]
  • August 22nd - Fear returns to active play.[13]
  • August 30th - zai leaves the team.[27]
  • September 1st - Fear leaves retirement and coaching position to return to active team.[28]
  • October 1st - GranDGranT joins the team as streamer.[29]
  • December 19th - SVG departs from his role as coach.[30]
  • December 20th - UNiVeRsE is released from the team. MISERY and BuLba join as captain and head coach, respectively.[31]
  • September 16th - Abed and RAMZES666 join the team as the new mid and offlane, respectively. s4 and SumaiL are removed from the active roster.[36][37]

History of Evil Geniuses[edit]

Entering the Dota 2 Scene[edit]

In October 2011, following The International 2011, Evil Geniuses announced the formation of their new Dota 2 division, including the return of two former DotA players, Jimmy "DeMoN" Ho and Clinton "Fear" Loomis. Their first roster consisted of Amel "PlaymatE" Barudzija, Jimmy "DeMoN" Ho, Rasmus "MiSeRy" Berth Filipsen, Clinton "Fear" Loomis and Per-Anders "Pajkatt" Olsson Lille. The team's first job was travelling to China to bootcamp for the future tournaments they would participate in the region including SMM 2011 and G-League Season 3. They managed to get to the quarter finals in the second edition of the World DotA Championship and then proceeded to play SMM 2011. However, due to issues with renewing his visa, PlaymatE had to depart early and was temporarily replaced with Chinese player Luo before the tournament began. Picking a unique strategy, the team was able to gain a convincing lead against MiTH.Trust in the upper bracket of the tournament, when suddenly a player of the MiTH squad crashed. This forced a replay of the entire match due to a controversial ruling which stated that the system which determined who was leading in the case of a crash or technical issue was only applicable after a certain amount of in game time had passed. Because of this and other problems regarding the organization of the tournament, EG decided to boycott the tournament.[65] In G-League Season 3 they failed to make it past the group stage. After the players returned home and a subsequent brief break, they shifted their focus fully to Dota 2, with a mindset of quickly reaching the highest levels of competition.

2012 and 2013[edit]

Pajkatt decided to leave the team to play with his countrymen in Loda's new team eXperience Gaming, starting in January 2012, and on the 22nd of February 2012 it was announced that he would be replaced by Dominik "Lacoste" Stipic. The team also announced that Jacob "Maelk "Toft-Andersen, two former Meet Your Makers teammates of MiSeRy and PlaymatE had joined the team. DeMoN is announced to be the official backup player. Even with having a six man roster, the team struggled to field a full lineup at times and often used stand-ins. in May 2012, the two It's Gosu eSports players BuLba and Universe who were announced to replace MiSeRY, Playmate and Lacoste, who wanted to practice more seriously and often than the rest of the team and thus following his former teammate Pajkatt to join CLG, Lacoste and PlaymatE on the 8th of May 2012 resulting in making Evil Geniuses a primarily American based team.

Despite never leaving the higher tier of competitive Dota 2, the team struggle in mid-2012 due to their Danish captain Maelk rarely being available because of various vacations and other commitments. On 12 September 2012, rumours started that BuLba and UNiVeRsE had left the team due to personal problems with some of the other team members. In another rumour, it was said that Jeyo from Team compLexity wold be joining to fill in one of the missing spots, but this was refuted by compLexity's CEO. Nonetheless, Jeyo had been playing for EG under the alias '007' with Bdiz playing as their fifth stand in.

Both players were officially announced as part of Evil Geniuses roster on October 19, 2012.

In May 2013, Evil Geniuses announced that their team captain Maelk would became the team's new coach and that Dutch player SexyBamboe had joined the team. The team also moved into a new team house in Phoenix, Arizona, to start their training for The International 3, five months away. But after a lackluster tournament in August, changes were made to the team roster on September 19th, with former Dignitas players Fogged and UNiVeRsE joining the team. This led to the departure of DeMoN, who had been part of the team since its Dota 2 beginnings in 2011.

New Team[edit]

S A D B O Y S[edit]

After five months with the renewed roster, the team seemed to have fallen apart over the holidays, and in late January 2014 team captain Fear and off-laner UNiVeRsE were seen to stand-in for up-and-coming team S A D B O Y S together with former HoN pros ppd and zai as well as up-and-coming Canadian player Arteezy. When Fogged was later seen to playing for Team Dog, the rumors that the rest of the S A D B O Y S roster was joining Evil Geniuses were already all but confirmed. With an impressive 16-2 game record with Fear and UNiVeRsE as stand-ins, Arteezy, ppd and zai were finally picked up by the Evil Geniuses organization on February 21st 2014.

After several weeks of inactivity due to a wrist injury, Fear decided to go inactive temporarily and pulled himself out of the team lineup for several prominent tournaments (Including The Summit and The International 4), though he stayed active in the scene by commentating and coaching EG to a first place victory at The Summit and a third place finish at The International 4. To fill the empty spot EG named long-time standin mason as their fifth player as Fear's replacement. Shortly after TI4, the team held a private meeting where it was decided that mason would be removed from the team, despite the team's successful run, which included the best TI result of a North American team to date, with him. On August 22nd, Evil Geniuses announced that Fear would return to active play.

With the original S A D B O Y S roster restored, the team went on to dominate international LANs in the second half of 2014. A second place finish at ESL One New York behind Vici Gaming, a top four finish at Dota Pit, and three first place finishes at WESC 2014, StarLadder, and DreamLeague would conclude Evil Geniuses's most successful year. However, the year would have a shocking conclusion.

Team Secret Rivalry: DAC and TI5[edit]

In January 2015, Arteezy and zai abruptly departed the team to join Team Secret, citing friction between Arteezy and captain ppd. This roster change could not have come at a worse time, as the largest LAN event outside of The International was scheduled be held in February 2015: the Dota 2 Asia Championships (DAC), with a prize pool of over $3,000,000 USD. Luckily, Aui_2000 had just been released from Cloud9 and together with the young pubstar Suma1L, Evil Geniuses was able to put together a full roster in time to prepare for DAC. Suma1L, days before his 16th birthday, showed an explosive performance at DAC, sweeping Team Secret and his predecessor Arteezy in the Lower Bracket Finals and finally sweeping Vici Gaming (after dropping to them in the Upper Bracket Finals) 3-0 in the Grand Finals, on the back of Suma1L's Storm Spirit.

In the run up to The International 2015, Team Secret would take their revenge on Evil Geniuses, besting them in the Grand Finals for both The Summit and ESL One Frankfurt. Despite winning the next largest tournament of the year, DAC, Evil Geniuses did not go into TI5 as favorites, this distinction was given to Team Secret. Placed in different groups, both teams easily qualified for the Upper Bracket of the main event, where they would have met in the second round if both teams won their first match. The much anticipated match-up would never happen, and EG would go on to face EHOME in the second round instead. Evil Geniuses repeated their run from DAC, losing to CDEC Gaming in the Upper Bracket Finals, going on to sweep LGD Gaming in the Lower Bracket Finals and finally taking their revenge on CDEC in the Grand Finals, beating them 3-1,[66] once again with Suma1L playing his signature Storm Spirit. However, the defining moment of the tournament would be the so-called "6 Million Dollar Echo Slam": CDEC, having killed Suma1L's Storm Spirit moved to Roshan's Pit to claim the Aegis but were stopped short by UNiVeRsE and ppd and their Echo Slam-Ice Blast combination.

A new Grand Champion has been crowned, and a new inscription will be set upon the Aegis of Champions:

2015/16: The New Majors[edit]

The Frankfurt Major & The Shanghai Major[edit]

In April 2015, Valve announced their plans for improving the competitive Dota 2 landscape as a whole by hosting an annual series of four marquee tournaments for the 2015-2016 season.[67] The first Valve-sponsored Dota Major Championship Event, The Frankfurt Major, was announced in September 2015. It featured a fixed prize pool of $3,000,000 and was hosted by ESL at Festhalle Messe in Frankfurt, Germany. As TI Champions, Evil Geniuses were assured a direct invite to this tournament.

On August 14th 2015, only a week after their historic victory at The International, the team decided to make a controversial roster change: Aui_2000, whose Naga Siren and Techies warranted first phase bans, was surprisingly removed from the roster. With this change, Arteezy rejoined the roster as carry and Fear moved to Aui's position as roaming support. The new roster was debuted at ESL One New York and was eliminated in the first round by eventual champions Vega Squadron. However, their next LAN attendance would show a dramatic improvement, with a second place finish at the MLG World Finals, where they were only beaten by their rivals Team Secret. These would be the only two tournaments that EG participated in before the important Frankfurt Major.

The team looked to be in form again for the first Major of the season. They easily topped their group ahead of Virtus.pro, securing themselves a spot in the Upper Bracket of the main event. In the first two rounds, EG was able to take their revenge on Vega Squadron and once again defeat CDEC Gaming, before once again meeting Team Secret in the Upper Bracket Final. However, they were denied entry into the Grand Finals and subsequently lost the Lower Bracket Finals to OG, who would go on to become the first Major Champions. Shortly after the Major, the new roster was able to secure their first LAN victory with a 3:2 victory over Virtus.pro at The Summit 4. With the next Major, The Shanghai Major, on the horizon, EG finished second place at two more LANs: StarLadder behind Alliance and MDL Winter behind EHOME.

At The Shanghai Major, EG would once again finish in 3rd place. After once again easily topping their group, they met their eternal rivals Team Secret already in the second round of the Upper Bracket and were bested once again. They managed to battle through two rounds in the Lower Bracket, beating fellow North Americans compLexity Gaming and tournament surprise MVP Phoenix, Unfortunately, they were denied the chance at a rematch against Team Secret, as EG were swept by the runner-up Team Liquid in the Lower Bracket Final.

Roster Drama: The Manila Major[edit]

Shortly after the conclusion of the Winter Major, the team traveled to Split, Croatia, to participate at Dota Pit. The Bracket would have EG meeting Secret already in the second round. However, their rivals were unexpectedly eliminated by Natus Vincere, whom EG went on to beat to easily secure a spot in the Grand Finals, where they met MVP Phoenix once again. MVP took their revenge for Shanghai in spectacular fashion, handily beating EG in a 3:0 sweep.

Dota Pit, however, will not be remember for the matches that were played. On March 22nd 2016, shortly after the tournament concluded, Arteezy would once again depart EG to join their rivals Team Secret, this time taking long time EG member UNiVeRsE with him. This roster shuffle would shock the scene, especially since it also meant that the Champions of the Shanghai Major would kick two players off their roster: MISERY and w33. With only a few days left before the roster lock, the remainder of the team was desperate to fill the vacancies. Aui_2000 and BuLba made their return just in time to not break the roster lock. This time, Aui would be the carry for the team, while BuLba takes over UNiVeRsE's position in the offlane.

The new roster debuted a few weeks later at the WePlay Dota2 League in Kiev, Ukraine. Despite severely under performing in the group stage, the team was able to make a deep Lower Bracket run to finish in 3rd place, behind Vega Squadron and MVP Phoenix. Later that month, EG traveled to Moscow, Russia, to participate in the inaugural EPICENTER tournament. After a promising group stage, EG were knocked down to the Lower Bracket by Team Liquid (who went on win the entire tournament) and were subsequently knocked out by their North American rivals compLexity Gaming. This disappointingly early departure did not bode well for the team, especially with the third Major of the season, The Manila Major, coming up.

The Evil Geniuses were once again directly invited to the Major. However, after a disappointing Group Stage, which saw them get knocked down to the bottom half of their group by MVP Phoenix in a very short 2:0 sweep (the later game ending in less than 20 minutes), EG found themselves in the dreaded Lower Bracket. They were eliminated in the first round by Vici Gaming Reborn.

The International 2016: The Long Road through the Open Qualifier[edit]

Evil Geniuses were not the only top team suffering at the Major: Team Secret also were eliminated in the first round of the Lower Bracket and on June 9th, before the tournament had even ended, it was revealed that UNiVeRsE and BuLba would be traded between the teams. A few days later, Aui was once again removed from the team, Fear moved back to playing carry and zai returned to the team as roaming support. zai had spent the past year on the sideline, electing to finish high school before returning to competitive play. These roster changes unfortunately meant that EG had broken the roster lock and were now ineligible for a direct TI invite, let alone an invite the Regional Qualifiers. Thus, shortly after returning from Manila, the team got ready for the Open Qualifier, a brutal gauntlet of Bo1 against a vast field of amateur and semi-professional teams. The Open Qualifiers barely proved a challenge for EG, who easily secured a spot at the Regional Qualifiers, without dropping a single map. Similarly, the Regional Qualifiers would see EG taking the top spot in the Group Phase, dropping only one map to compLexity Gaming, whom they later went on to beat in the 1st place tiebreaker. With this, EG secured their spot at The International 2016.

Before TI, EG participated in one LAN, StarLadder, held in Los Angeles, California. There they were first dropped to the Lower Bracket by victors Natus Vincere and subsequently eliminated by the ex-Virtus.pro squad F.R.I.E.N.D.S. and finished in 5-6th place.

Despite their easy route through the Open and Regional Qualifiers, their recent LAN record had people questioning how well this EG squad would do at TI. Yet, they went on to defy the doubts, finishing second in their group, only behind the heavy favorites and double Major champions OG. In fact, EG only dropped one Bo2 series, to Alliance, the first game of which featured LD's infamous "DING DING DING, MOTHERFUCKER!". It would not be EG's only epic game of the tournament: on their way to the Upper Bracket Final, EG defeated EHOME in the first ever mega-creep comeback at an International, [68] on the back of several Dagon purchases and a Divine Rapier on UNiVeRsE's Faceless Void. In the end, EG were dropped out of the Upper Bracket Final by an unstoppable Wings Gaming and later were eliminated by Digital Chaos in the Lower Bracket Final to finish in 3rd place. It would be the team's 3rd top 3 finish at The International in a row.

The 2016/17 Season: A New Roster[edit]

Following their miraculous run at TI6, the team's roster was reshuffled again. Long time members and pillars of the roster for three season, both ppd and Fear retired from the active roster. Fear would go on to become the new roster's coach, while ppd would take over as CEO of the restructured EG. The captaincy would be taken over by Danish support player Cr1t-, who was already a two-time Major champion with OG, while Arteezy once again returned to the team.

The new roster would start off with a bang, immediately winning the first LAN they attended at MDL Autumn 2016. In preparation for the Boston Major, EG went on to place highly in several more tournaments, with a 4th place finish at the Northern Arena BEAT Invitational, a 3rd place finish at The Summit 6, as well as a second place finish in Elimination Mode 2.0.

At the Boston Major in December 2016, EG disappointed with a poor group stage, losing twice to American rivals compLexity Gaming and found themselves having to face the current TI champions Wings in the first round of the playoffs. Despite this, EG prevailed and made it through to the semifinals, where they were eliminated by OG who went on to win the Major. After the Major, the team finished the year by winning another LAN, China Top 2016, and started the new year by winning Dota Pit, by beating Major champions OG in the Grand Finals in an exciting five game series.

With the second and last Major of the year, the Kiev Major, looming on the horizon, the team lay relatively low, attending only one LAN: the Dota 2 Asia Championships, where they finished in the top 6. After another disappointing group stage, they were forced to start in the lower bracket and immediately faced and eliminated Wings again. History would repeat itself at the Kiev Major as well, when EG was once again eliminated in the semifinals by OG, who went on to win the Major.

With the second Major concluded, the team would start to look towards The International 2017. This preparation took a promising start, with the team's fourth LAN victory of the season at the Manila Masters and a second place finish behind Team Liquid at EPICENTER 2017. Their final LAN of the season before TI would be MDL 2017, where they were once again bested by their rivals OG and finished in 5-6th place.

Strong results throughout the year, four LAN victories and top four finishes at both Majors, meant that EG was directly invited to The International 2017 and was considered a strong contender for the Aegis of Champions. The tournament took a promising start with EG improving upon their usual group stage performance. However, contrary to their playoff performances of the past season, EG completely crumbled on the main stage, dropping 2-0 to both Newbee and Team Empire. Thus the squad was eliminated and finished the season off with a disappointing 9-12th place at TI7, marring an otherwise successful season.

The 2017/18 Season: The Dota Pro Circuit[edit]

In the ensuing post-TI roster shuffle, Swedish roaming support zai departed the team to join former Evil Genius ppd on Optic Gaming. With this vacancy, coach Fear returned to the active squad as hard support and captain, allowing Cr1t- to return to his former role as roaming support.

Unlike the previous season, this team was sorely lacking any notable achievements. Early exits from the first few Majors and Minors, with a 3rd place finish at DreamLeague Season 8 being the only decent result, saw the team struggling to find any success. In a dramatic roster shake up at the end of 2017, another long time EG-member UNiVeRsE was removed from the roster and replaced by their star midlaner Suma1L, while Danish support player MiSeRy would take over the captaincy and Fear would take over the mid lane.

These changes failed to show any significant improvements for the first few months of 2018. With a Minor championship at GESC Indonesia, the team was at least able to secure one bright spot. However, further poor results at Majors saw the team without enough DPC points to secure an invite to The International 2018. A last place finish at the penultimate Major of the season, ESL One Birmingham, was the final nail in the coffin for this squad and subsequently Fear and MiSeRy were removed from the team. In an overnight roster shuffle in Birmingham, they were replaced by Fly and s4 from OG who were similarly struggling throughout the season. This roster shuffle would not only shock the remaining members of OG but also the Dota 2 scene, as Fly was one of the founding members of OG and a long time friend of N0tail whom he'd left behind. With this change, Suma1L would return to his rightful position in the mid lane. With mere hours to depart to China for the last Major of the season, the Supermajor, the brand new roster had no chance to practice together and finished the group stage without winning a single map. In the main event, after barely eking out a victory against Team Spirit in the first round of the lower bracket, they were decimated by their North American rivals Optic Gaming and exited the tournament in 9-12th place.

Due to the last minute roster changes, EG once again found themselves ineligible for an invite to the regional qualifiers, let alone to The International itself and they would have to take the perilous path through the open qualifier again. Luckily, neither the open nor the regional qualifier proved much of a challenge and they would take the first seed of the North American qualifier. Their final test before The International would be DOTA Summit 9, where EG managed to sweep Fnatic 3-0 in the Grand Finals, securing a second LAN victory for the season.

Despite this, EG was mostly written off as a TI contender. Thus it came as a shock to most, when EG was topping their group after the first two days of the group stage and eventually took the second seed ahead of PSG.LGD who had dominated the later Majors of the season. They were still considered the underdog in the first round of the upper bracket against Team Secret, who had consistently remained at the top of the field throughout the season. But this would not stop this new EG roster from sweeping Secret aside with a swift 2-0. However, in the next round they were faced by OG, who had scrambled to put a team together and qualify for TI. The grudge match would go to OG, though, and EG found themselves in the lower bracket. Here, they would first eliminate the powerhouse of the Majors, Virtus.pro, and then the former TI champions Team Liquid, without dropping a single map to either team. In the Lower Bracket Final, however, their run was finally stopped short by PSG.LGD and EG would finish in 3rd place at TI for the third time after 2014 and 2016.

2018/19: The New Dota Pro Circuit[edit]

In the aftermath of TI8, Evil Geniuses would make no changes to their roster. As a result of their explosive performance at TI, expectations were high for them and they would easily take the first qualifier spot for the first Major of the season. The roster's first LAN appearance of the new season was at ESL One Hamburg, where they were unable to secure an upper bracket berth, due to drawing all five series in the group stage. In the second round of said lower bracket, they were eliminated by Team Secret who went on to win the entire tournament.

The first of five Majors of the new DPC was to be the Kuala Lumpur Major and EG was once again considered a strong contender for a Major victory. Despite easily topping their group, EG was dropped down to the lower bracket by ppd's Ninjas in Pyjamas in the first round of the playoffs. However, from there, EG went on a tear through the lower bracket eliminating North American rivals Forward Gaming, Fnatic, TI8 runner-ups PSG.LGD, and finally NiP who had previously defeated them. Their run was stopped in the lower bracket final by Virtus.pro - who would themselves be crowned Major champions - and EG placed third at the first Major of the season.

Due to the schedule of the new season, just after the first Major had barely concluded, all teams would have to rush back home to prepare for the following Major's qualifiers. While this qualifier would not go as smoothly as the previous, EG still managed to secure a spot at the second Major, the Chongqing Major, held at the end of January 2019. Here, the story of the previous Major would practically repeat itself for the squad: after dropping to the lower bracket in the first round of the playoffs, the team battles their way all the way to the lower bracket final and are again defeated there by the eventual champions - this time, Team Secret. Another third place finish at a Major placed EG at the third place in the DPC rankings.

Following the conclusion of the second Major, in early February, EG took the top seed in the North American qualifier for the third Major of the season and later that month, they traveled to Macau for MDL Macau. In Macau, despite some shaky performances in the group stage, they were able to secure an upper bracket spot. However, they were stopped short by Team Liquid - twice: once in the upper bracket final and once again in the Grand Finals, after EG had eliminated Virtus.pro in the lower bracket finals. Despite narrowly missing their first LAN victory of the season, EG was certainly at the top of the competitive scene and remained a strong contender for the coming Major.

The third Major of the season would be held in Stockholm, Sweden, with DreamLeague Season 11. Once again, EG were able to secure an upper bracket spot by effortlessly topping their group. However, in the first round they were upset by an unexpected Keen Gaming and once again the team saw themselves dropped down to the lower bracket early. Due to unexpected results in the other matches, they were forced to face off against Virtus.pro in the third round of the lower bracket and were defeated 2-1 after a very intense back-and-forth series. EG exited the tournament with a top 8 finish which, while disappointing, secured them enough points for a direct invite to The International 2019.[69]
