[edit]From Middle High German werben, from Old High German werban, from Proto-West Germanic *hwerban. Cognate with Dutch werven (“to recruit”), English wharve (“to turn”) Icelandic hverfa (“to turn”), Faroese hvørva (“to disappear”).
