German
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Middle High German vertuschen, vertussen, vertuzzen (“to cover up, hide”), of obscure origin, but apparently related to Middle Low German vörtussen (“to hide, cover up, suppress”). Influenced in meaning by false association with unrelated tuschen (“to paint, use mascara”).
