From Old Japanese, from Proto-Japonic *napay.
Apophonic form of 苗 (nawa, “seedling”, bound form, only used in compounds), similar to nouns such as 神 (kami, kan-, kamu-, “god”) and 目 (me, ma-, “eye”).
