Etymology

From Proto-Southwestern Tai *daːŋᴬ² (road; way), from Late Han Chinese or Early Middle Chinese (MC dang, “road inside temple”).[1] Doublet of ถัง (tǎng, Tang Dynasty). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨴᩤ᩠ᨦ, Khün ᨴᩤ᩠ᨦ, Isan ทาง, Lao ທາງ (thāng), ᦑᦱᧂ (taang), Tai Dam ꪕꪱꪉ, Shan တၢင်း (táang), Tai Nüa ᥖᥣᥒᥰ (täang), Phake တင် (taṅ), Ahom 𑜄𑜂𑜫 (taṅ), Zuojiang Zhuang tangz (Longzhou).
