Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Motorsport

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Motorsport. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Motorsport|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Motorsport. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

This list is also part of the larger list of deletion debates related to Sports.

After a deletion discussion it was decided to merge Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Motorsports into this page. For the archive of WikiProject Deletion sorting/Motorsports, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Motorsports/archive.

Articles for deletion

[edit]
Josh MacDonald (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

Fails WP:SPORTCRIT. All primary sources except 2. The BBC article does not even mention MacDonald. The Echo article may be considered third party coverage but SPORTCRIT requires multiple sources. There appears to be a namesake who is an Australian footballer. LibStar (talk) 01:46, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Jaimon Lidsey (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

Fails WP:SPORTSCRIT. All sources provided are primary except the Eurosport article. When I read that article it contains no mention of Lidsey. A search for sources only comes up with speedway related sources which are primary. LibStar (talk) 01:42, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tony Langdon (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

Fails WP:SPORTSCRIT. Only primary sources provided. A search under his name and "Anthony Langdon" yielded no sources. I also searched Australian database trove and it only yielded two 1 line mentions of this person. LibStar (talk) 09:21, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Clube de Regatas do Flamengo (Superleague Formula team) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View AfD | edits since nomination)

Unnecessary WP:CFORK of teams that never was independently notable and existed solely to the short-lived series, serving to only the most ardent fans per WP:FANCRUFT as a Wikiproject taskforce was active for it. Worthy of Fandom maybe (nothing wrong with it for those who ask) but then the series has been long gone 13 years ago. WP:BEFORE search don’t turn out much other than announcements, if they still exist. Other than routine maintenances, article do not appear to be updated after 2010, indicating it's significance are pretty thin.

Also fail WP:SIGCOV as besides WP:PRIMARY, the only sources only cover a test session, less about the team to help it to assert notability. Like the series, nothing about it is notable either other than the team operating it. Insufficiently notable WP:GNG to help either. SpacedFarmer (talk) 09:19, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Keep - I believe that all of the SF team pages should remain, as a usual summary of the performances, regardless that the series lasted only 3-4 years. Are you suggesting that all of the A1 Grand Prix country team pages are also not notable? Officially Mr X (talk) 01:11, 17 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comments There maybe enough for some basic form of WP:GNG pass, I found sources, [1] (primary source), [2], [3], [4], [5], [6] (primary) , [7], [8], this one has a few hits on britsonpole.com which might be useful. [9], [10], [11]. Need I go on, there are a lot of hits to digest. There are more online, what kind of WP:BEFORE did you do? Besides, you talk a load of codswallop, I looked at your nominations just now, and the work load you did. It's nothing short than just, I don't like this shit so I am going to nominate all these articles for AfD. I don't disagree there are problems with these articles, but your process and this nomination, and the rest you've done. Well, you should be reported to WP:ANI for the process. You are not here to build an encyclopaedia. Govvy (talk) 09:56, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
First off all WP:PRIMARY do not count for notability, thus are all ignored. Reviewing them, this is what I say in WP:RS
    • [12] - about the series, which gives more weight for the series, not the team
    • [13] - about the partnership between F1 and the eponymous football team, the 'team' has pitiful amount of coverage to it. A regurgitation of article provided below.
    • [14] - again WP:PRIMARY - do not count for notability.
    • [15] - same as above, another regurgitation of press releases
    • [16] - primarily about the series, far less about the series
    • [17] - as above, another regurgitation of press releases
    • britsonpole.com - same I mentioned below
    • [18] is another WP:ROUTINE announcement that a team is retaining a driver for another season, does it assert notability for the team? The operating team is notable, no doubt.
    • [19] - another announcement, dubious source. More like a site run by hobbyists/student journalist. Very little weight for WP:RS.
    • [20] is about the 2010 season with a tiny bit to promote the races as usual as you would expect in local papers. Not much about the 'teams'
This may help pass in 2010 but this is 2024, so none of these will support the notability of the teams nominated or provide WP:SIGCOV. (Personal attack removed) BTW, you speak of WP:IDONTLIKEIT given by your response. SpacedFarmer (talk) 11:07, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment I am not sure I want to reply to you, but you do know there is nothing wrong with primary sources in an article, primary can be used to back up basic facts. You can use primary and secondary sources together to show a notable point. That is a point about facts matching each other. I honestly don't know why so many people forget this. You can break down the sources I provided all you like, I am just showing there are sources that can be used and some basic form that could pass, at what point did I say keep on the comment above, if I truly want an article to be kept, I would put keep in bold at the beginning and not comment! There is nothing new about sports series that have burst out in a blaze of publicity then vanished without trace like this one. Having checked WP:BEFORE, independent coverages are extremely thin bar the of press releases, using Tesla to make a buzz for publicity. Numerous of these sources are WP:PRIMARY. WP:SIGCOV is very lacking as sources do not assert notability.

Some what is written are uncited without a single source such as it 'was cancelled due to a lack of a lead investor', indicating that it died without ceremony like it happen to most failed start-up businesses. SpacedFarmer (talk) 08:52, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate this article creator's enthusiasm in the hope that Wikipedia will help to make it notable but editors should be advised of notability guidelines before creating. In this case, can it meet notability guidelines? No, unfortunately. Like everything in Acceleration 2014, nothing there meets notability guidelines.

Unneeded WP:CFORK that is solely useful to the tiniest minorities of dedicated fans, thats if they exist, and is too over reliant on WP:PRIMARY as having checked via WP:BEFORE, this brought in nothing. All the rounds are group together in this nomination for this same reason. What all those articles have in common is that they all fail WP:GNG, as well as having poor level of WP:SIGNIFICANCE and WP:EVENTCRIT, having lasted only a single season. Also, WP:NOSTATS and WP:NSPORTSEVENT, having being a racing series by anybody other than the most ardent fans who may come and fight for a keep vote. Fails WP:SPORTSCRIT, only primary sources supplied. A search in google news only comes up with third party sources of a namesake. LibStar (talk) 04:29, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Helsingin Sanomat, 9 May 1975 - mentioned a few times in standard post-event coverage together with other participants.
  • Etelä-Suomen Sanomat, 31 May 1976 - same, a few passing mentions
  • Etelä-Suomen Sanomat, 22 January 1978 - elected as the chair of the Salpausselkä Motor Club, given some awards. Very short piece.
  • Etelä-Suomen Sanomat, 30 August 1976 - event coverage, wins bronze in Turku.
  • Etelä-Suomen Sanomat, 19 September 1974 - briefly mentioned as the "best driver in the series".
I didn't survey all the hits, but the best appears to be a profile/interview in Etelä-Suomen Sanomat on 1 September 1977 (link, requires a researcher account), a bit more than a quarter of a (broadsheet) page in size. Interestingly, it also features a (very cropped) image of an English language news story titled "Markku provides bright spot" by Ken Gaunt, apparently from either Speedway Mail or Leicester Mercury, both of which we are told have featured him.
Based on the coverage I have access to, I'm personally rather ambivalent. That said, if someone can actually find the English language coverage mentioned in the Finnish papers and verify they are of reasonable depth, I suspect this would lean towards keep for me. -Ljleppan (talk) 09:59, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Who's who of world speedway appears to be written by rider Ivan Mauger, as a rider he has a direct connection to the sport and may even know personally many of the riders covered in his book.
