editFrom Middle Dutch smachten, ultimately from a variant of Proto-Germanic *smēhaz (“small, little”). See also Ancient Greek μικρός (mikrós, “a little of”), Latin mica.[1][2] West Germanic cognates include Old High German gismāhtōn (modern German schmachten).
