Etymology
editFrom Proto-Turkic *ïrmak~*yïrmak (“river”). Perhaps ultimately from Proto-Turkic *ār-~*ar-~*ïr- (“to flow”), whence also Azerbaijani arx (“irrigation ditch”).[1] Also cognate with Chuvash ҫырма (śyrma) and Turkish ırmak.
