An old favorite
editHi Dvortygirl,
Welcome to Wiktionary! You already did a great job!
Jo
Thanks for the warm welcome and the chuckle about defenestrate. It's gratifying that someone out there is enjoying my meanderings. I know I am! Dvortygirl 08:20, 31 Oct 2003 (UTC)
- You're welcome. (In both ways... English is a funny language, isn't it?) I am enjoying your contributions a lot. I have a little bit less time now than a few months ago, but when I do find time I will add some translations to your articles. It's good that somebody besides Eclecticology is taking up the entering of definitions of English words. Most of us were mostly adding translations, which is good. But Wiktionary needs definitions of the words too. The choice of the words you are entering is also very interesting to me. (My mother language isn't English either, although I already have gotten used to most idiomatic expressions that exist in English).
- About defenestrate... I wasn't aware it was actually a real word in English. I though that the people using it on the internet had invented it specifically for the purpose of talking about getting rid of Windows... (I think it should be added to the article, as a new way usage, but I'm not sure whether we can get a consensus on that)
- Keep up the good work!
- Jo
Hello. Thanks for the entry :-). I have added the source of the book where I found it, however I do not know the template for such thinks. --youssef 10:50, 1 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Goats /can/ put their best foot forward!
editOf course, no hard feelings, all in good fun. Inflection doesn't translate well via arial typeface and from 3000 miles away, but there is little that will offend me, so fear not. TheDaveRoss
Variants of idioms
editHi,
I think it's great you're adding idioms as this is an area that can easily get overlooked.
Could I make a couple of requests of you, please?
- Can you list alternative forms under a heading enclosed in sets of four equals signs rather than as the respelling of the entry? So, for example, "get someone's goat", which can also be "get somebody's goat", might look like this:

editGreat! From what I've seen you appear to have a good sense of judgement. Putting a lot of these things on rfc just doesn't work. That page is like a big rug designed for putting sweepings under. Too often things are put there as something that someone else should do. I'm happy to see someone accepting the responsibility of doing the work herself. Anyway, thanks for the heads up as that will affect my view if someone else complains. Eclecticology 19:02, 2005 Jun 22 (UTC)

Food
editOne of the things that I've been trying to do is to have all English categories start with a capital letter. This will involve revising everything in Category:food. I started this group by looking at Category:boozing (which could have a better name), and ended up treating Category:Food and Drink as a top level category for anything comestible. See my comments at User talk:Sally Ku regarding Category:Colors for some of my thinking about reorganization. Eclecticology 18:08, July 16, 2005 (UTC)

editThanks for deleting this again. It looks like my experiment in seeing whether this would go away didn't work. Then it struck me that having this list at the top of RfD could be an invitation for vandals like AP. I'll try to find a better, and less obvious place for putting these so that they can be tracked. What about truth???
editHi Dvortygirl and all
I am Kassios from the Macedonia Region of Greece.
I would like to ask a few questions. I noticed that the article for Macedonia and Macedonian was insufficient, so I edited them with the etymology of the names and a link to a reference to the Macedonia Region of Greece, simply out of respect to truth and honesty. Then, naturally, I contributed with an article about the Macedonia Region of Greece (since there wasn’t one) and some information about it, like its capital, its population, its borders etc., with a link to an article about it on Wikipedia and a few external links, under the definition "Macedonia Region" so people could refer to it. Just simple information that anybody can find in any good dictionary or geography book, or with a simple search online by typing these words.
However, obviously that was not liked by the administrators Alexander 007 and SemberBlotto and my article was deleted within minutes! Quite surprised (and even shocked to be honest), since my article was very short and had just simple information and not any comment about the "Macedonian dispute" between Greece and FYROM -I am sure you are familiar with the issue - I tried to find out what I did wrong...!
So after thinking, the only thing I came up with was that maybe it was the definition "Macedonia Region" of Greece! Maybe it sounded "political incorrect" (unfortunately many people suffer from lack of history knowledge in our days) so I changed it to "Greek Region of Macedonia" and I even removed the link to the Wikipedia article about it and all the external links. But even that was not to be accepted by the above administrators, especially SemberBlotto and they deleted that too!!! Furthermore, they broke down the edit I had done to the article for Macedonian and from Greek Region of Macedonia, now it’s: Greek region of Macedonia which refers to three different things, like there isn’t such a think as a "Greek Region of Macedonia"!!! Like countries do not have regions and counties!!!
Now my questions:
What did I do wrong that led to my article being deleted twice???
Why is it ok for Wiktionary to have a definition under Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and not Greek Region of Macedonia???
Is it ok for people to know about the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia but not ok to know about the "Greek Region of Macedonia"???
Does Wiktionary refuse to acknowledge that there is a Macedonia Region in Greece???
Does where I live not actually exist???
Isn’t Wiktionary meant to be a "Free dictionary" that people can refer to for knowledge or is it one of the "WE-WILL-TELL-YOU-WHAT-WE-WANT-YOU-TO-KNOW" rubbish that is provided by tons online???
Do Wiktionary administrators have an agenda???
Because obviously its trustworthiness is tested right here!
With respect to truth and knowledge.
Kassios

Disbelief re policy
editAre you sure there is a policy against presenting entries from other dictionaries on the talk pages? I am not talking about doing so for the main entries. How else can a discussion of meanings take place without considering what other dictionaries say? The definition given for disbelief is quite different from most dictionaries - the defintion given is appropriate for non-belief, just as a 2 year old might not believe the earth goes around the sun, having never considered it -- However, the example given requires the individual to have considered the idea & to have a conscious problem believing it --JimWae 22:37, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Current practice in the Translations section?
editHi, Dvortygirl
I've been away for a while and the practices seem to have changed meanwhile. Now, what is the current practice in the Translations section if there is one definition only for a certain word? Is the Show/Hide version with definition heading always recommended, or is the conventional show-always version ok? If the latter one, with or without definition then? --Tiku 19:58, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
Untagged images
editWould you please explain the sources and licenses of these images that you uploaded?
--Jusjih 17:20, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

To transfer to Commons, please go to commons:Commons:Upload and choose "It is from another Wikimedia project". You will see how to transwiki your images with the CommonsHelper tool, but once transwikied, please add license tags soon, or they would be tagged no license.--Jusjih 15:06, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Naming conventions for audio files for homographs
editHi,
You head up the audio brigade, right? Can you tell me whether there are any naming conventions for audio files for words that are spelled alike but pronounced differently (such as the noun and verb spelled "combat")?
Thanks in advance,
—RuakhTALK 22:15, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
- Generally, those end up as commons:Image:En-us-combat-noun.ogg and commons:Image:En-us-combat-verb.ogg with any other distinctions coming before the ".ogg". HTH. If you are interested in mass-recording via Audacity or Shtooka, then I am interested in mass-uploading & mass-linking them via User:Dvortybot/commons:User:Dvortybot...but I haven't perfected the automation for homonyms yet. --Connel MacKenzie 03:44, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Begging request :)
editHi Dvortygirl. My name is Alison - you may know me from en.wikipedia, but I'm also sysop on ga.wikti and gd.wikti. Really sorry I missed your talk in Palo Alto last week but the day job here in Cupertino had me tied up.
Anyways, this is a begging request :) I was just wondering if you'd like to run your bot over on ga.wikt (and to a lesser extent, gd.wikt). I'm currently trying to revive both wiktionaries. ga.wikt was largely dead until last month, but now it's thriving again and editors are arriving to contribute. gd.wikt is still languishing, but I'll get to it. I'm a reasonably fluent Irish speaker and would gladly help on any localisation that needs doing. HermesBot is already up and running over there. Thanks! - Ali-oops 19:36, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Characters in .ogg filenames
editHello Dvortygirl, I've downloaded Shtooka today and recorded several Hungarian words. The tool is tremendous help, thanks for that. I have a question on non-English characters in .ogg filenames. It seems that ő and ű cannot be used. They are reduced to o and u. As soon as I change them back to the original, the files cannot be played. Is there a solution? Thanks. --Panda10 03:18, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
- The problem may be in multiple places. When I copy words to Shtooka before recording, the ő's and ű's are displayed as vertical lines within the word. After recording, the file is saved, but the letters appear as o's and u's in the filename. I play the .ogg files with RealPlayer. If I correct the letters in the .ogg filename, RealPlayer can't locate the file because it is still looking for the stripped letters. I don't have this issue with .mp3 files and Windows Media player (which can't play .ogg). Audacity also reduces these two letters to o and u when the .ogg file is saved. --Panda10 13:42, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
Shtooka Recorder simplify filenames (many windows applications don't support unicode filenames). But the right information is written in the tag of the soundfile. You can use Shtooka Explorer to browse your collection with unicode filenames (we already recorded chinese, russian, ukrainian, arabic collections... there is no problem).
If you have problem to display special chars, you may have to active the special chars support in the windows control panel.

- Thanks zMoo. I will post a question on BP about this. --Panda10 21:41, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

thanks and questions
editHi Dvortygirl,
Thanks for the welcome and the answer to my question on Talk:warrior. I have responded there with some further questions. Regards, -Classicfilms 05:55, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
- You are awesome, Dvortygirl! Thanks for the tips and the style guide link - I think you've given me enough information to work with. You guessed correctly that I was hesitating to revert or make changes before learning how things work here. Glad to know it is a bit less formal, though when working in a new Wiki, it's better to start off by asking a few questions rather than step on toes. I'll go ahead and follow your suggestions. If I make any other mistakes, let me know. And thanks again for the welcome. -Classicfilms 06:33, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

the JackMerridew TEMP account
editThanks. Obviously, the unblock worked. I see you didn't re-block the account. While I don't think it matters a whole lot if that account is blocked, I believe the idea is to block it, but disable autoblocking— so as to not block my main account. I've not yet figured out which way is up here — I'm mostly looking around — so I've no concern about being inadvertently blocked for a day. I do expect to be more active here than on, say wikiversity, as I have a search-wiktionary link added to the context menu for selected on-screen text — and I have a good vocabulary. editQuestion about recordings
editI've recently begun doing audio recordings for Wiktionary. At first I did them in Audacity, recording, de-noising, trimming, naming, and uploading each one individually. Now I'm using Shtooka and Commonist, which has streamlined the whole process. However, now I have about 100 sound files and I shudder at the thought of manually inserting each one into its corresponding Wiktionary file. Any suggestions? Furthermore, I've come across a few places where the existing recording is either awkward or incorrect. In cases such as these, should I update the existing file, or is this rude and should I instead just upload mine as a new file?
Also, I was looking at the description pages of some of your recordings and saw that you wrote that you make the recordings in "Sktooka". Thought you might want to change that if you haven't already. DroEsperanto 21:58, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
Azure
editHi, I removed the recording you made for the word azure from that page. It does not match any of the pronunciations on that page, and indeed the pronunciation in the recording (uh-ZHOOR) is not countenanced by any published dictionary I could find. OED, M-W, AHD, RH all give the pronunciation AZH-er. Nohat 23:54, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

editHi there. I saw on your Commons user page that you occasionally do recordings for articles on that project. I just finished a very large project at Albany, New York and a recording of that article would be awesome. Would you be able/interested? Please give me a shout when you get a chance, at my WP talk page. Thanks! UpstateNYer 01:47, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
- That makes sense. It would be a luxury anyway, and I can see where you're coming from with pronunciations (actually, I hadn't thought of that). However, would you be able to record just the name "Albany" for the article? It's actually mispronounced by many people (mainly from the midwest US), so an aural pronunciation guide would be good. That should only add minimal work for you, since it's only one word. What do you think? UpstateNYer 00:52, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
Mobile homepage formatting
editHi, Steven Walling referred me to you.
We will be switching Wiktionary and all its language versions to a mobile default view shortly. Just wondering if you would be willing to look at the instructions for formatting a mobile homepage, and comment on whether they are clear enough:
We do plan to translate these instructions, but just want to sanity-check them before we do the translation.
Could you point me to admins for the following language versions of Wiktionary: de, ru, pt, ja - these are the languages with no mobile content on the homepage currently.
Many thanks. --Pchang (talk) 19:06, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

An important message about renaming users
editDear Dvortygirl,
I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.
As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.
Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.
The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.
Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.
In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.
Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.
Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 18:24, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users
editHi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
