닥나무 (dangnamu)

Etymology

edit

First attested in the Gugeupganibang eonhae (救急簡易方諺解 / 구급간이방언해), 1489, as Middle Korean 닥나모 (Yale: tak-namwo), equivalent to (dak, paper mulberry) +‎ 나무 (namu, tree).

As paper-making was introduced from China, compare Old Chinese (OC *taːʔ, *tʰaʔ, “paper mulberry”), although the correspondences are imperfect.

Altaists compare this to Japanese names of hemlock or zelkova: とが/つが () and つき ().
