High Intensity Beam Test of Low Z Materials for the Upgrade of SPS-to-LHC Transfer Line Collimators and LHC Injection Absorbers
/ Maciariello, Fausto (CERN) ; Aberle, Oliver (CERN) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Folch, Ramon (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Karagiannis, Konstantinos (CERN) ; Lamas Garcia, Inigo (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Nuiry, Francois-Xavier (CERN) et al.
In the framework of the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU) and High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project, the collimators in the SPS-to LHC transfer lines will undergo important modifications. The changes to these collimators will allow them to cope with beam brightness and intensity levels much increased with respect to their original design parameters: nominal and ultimate LHC. [...]

In the framework of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Injectors Upgrade (LIU) and the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) Projects at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research, in Geneva, Switzerland), collimators in the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) to LHC transfer lines as well as ring collimators in the LHC will undergo important upgrades in the forthcoming years, mainly focused during the Long Shutdown 2 foreseen during 2019-2020. This contribution will detail the current design of the TCDIL collimators with a particular emphasis on the engineering developments performed on the collimator jaws, aiming at getting a stringent flatness while consid-ering also the integration of thermal shock resistant materials. Status of Crystal Collimation Studies at the LHC
/ Rossi, Roberto (CERN) ; Aberle, Oliver (CERN) ; Andreassen, Odd (CERN) ; Butcher, Mark (CERN) ; Dionisio Barreto, Cristovao Andre (CERN) ; Galluccio, Francesca (INFN, Naples) ; Lamas Garcia, Inigo (CERN) ; Masi, Alessandro (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Montesano, Simone (CERN) et al.
Crystal collimation is a technique that relies on highly pure bent crystals to coherently deflect beam particles - through the channeling mechanisms - onto dedicated absorbers. Standard multi-stage collimation systems for hadron beams use amorphous materials as primary collimators and might be limited by nuclear interactions and ion fragmentation that are strongly suppressed in crystals. The current LHC transfer line collimation system will not be able to provide enough protection for the high brightness beams in the high-luminosity LHC era. The new collimation system will have to attenuate more and be more robust than its predecessor. [...]

3D Carbon/Carbon composites for beam intercepting devices at CERN

3D Carbon/Carbon (3D CC) is a well‐known industrial composite material for high‐temperature applications. One of its main advantages resides in its ability to maintain good material characteristics at elevated temperatures (higher than 2700°C), which makes it potentially interesting for beam interaction applications where high strength at high temperature is required. Impedance Measurements and Simulations on the TCTP and TDI LHC Collimators

The LHC collimation system is a critical element for the safe operation of the LHC machine and is subject to continuous performance monitoring, hardware upgrade and optimization. In this work we will address the impact on impedance of the upgrades performed on the TDI injection protection collimator, where the absorber material has been changed to mitigate the device heating observed in machine operation, and on selected secondary (TCS) and tertiary (TCT) collimators, where beam position monitors (BPM) have been embedded for faster jaw alignment.
