PERLE (Powerful ERL for Experiments) is a novel ERL test facility, initially proposed to validate choices for a 60 GeV ERL foreseen in the design of the LHeC and the FCC-eh. Its main thrust is to probe high current, CW, multi-pass operation with superconducting cavities at 802 MHz (and perhaps testing other frequencies of interest). [...]

Architectural Considerations for Recirculated and Energy-Recovered Hard XFEL Drivers / Douglas, David (Jefferson Lab) ; Angal-Kalinin, Deepa (Daresbury ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. A confluence of events motivates discussion of design options for hard XFEL driver accelerators. Firstly, multiple superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) driven systems are now online (European XFEL), in construction (LCLS-II), or in design (MARIE); these provide increasing evidence of the transformational potential they offer for fundamental science with its concomitant benefits. The Platform for Research and Applications with Electrons (PRAE) is a multidisciplinary R&D; facility gathering subatomic physics, instrumentation, radiobiology and clinical research around a high-performance electron accelerator with beam energies up to 70 MeV. In this paper we report the complete optics design and performance evaluation of a Very High Energy Electron (VHEE) innovative radiobiology study, in particular by using Grid mini-beam and FLASH methodologies, which could represent a major breakthrough in Radiation Therapy (RT) treatment modality..

PERLE: Powerful Energy Recovery Linac for Experiments - Conceptual Design Report / Angal-Kalinin, D. (Daresbury) ; Arduini, G. (CERN) ; Auchmann, B. (CERN) ; Bernauer, J. (MIT) ; Bogacz, A. (Jefferson Lab) ; Bordry, F. (CERN) ; Bousson, S. (Orsay, IPN) ; Bracco, C. (CERN) ; Brüning, O. (CERN) ; Calaga, R. (CERN) et al.
A conceptual design is presented of a novel ERL facility for the development and application of the energy recovery technique to linear electron accelerators in the multi-turn, large current and large energy regime. The main characteristics of the powerful energy recovery linac experiment facility (PERLE) are derived from the design of the Large Hadron electron Collider, an electron beam upgrade under study for the LHC, for which it would be the key demonstrator. Accelerator Challenges of the LHeC Project / Holzer, Bernhard (CERN) ; André, Kévin (CERN) ; Bogacz, Alex (Jefferson Lab) ; Brüning, Oliver (CERN) ; Klein, Max (Liverpool U.)
The LHeC project studies the design of a future electron-proton collider at CERN that will run in parallel to the standard LHC operation. For this purpose, the existing LHC storage ring will be combined with an Energy Recovery Linac (ERL), to accelerate electrons up to kinetic energy of 50 GeV. [...]
