Assessment of beam-intercepting device robustness for intensity increase in CERN’s North Area / Sharp, C J (CERN) ; Francia, A Romero (CERN) ; Ximenes, R Franqueira (CERN) ; Calviani, M (CERN) ; Grenard, J -L (CERN) ; Mazzola, G (CERN) ; Esposito, L S (CERN) ; Bernhard, J (CERN) ; Mazuecos, A Lafuente (CERN) ; Galan, F Sanchez (CERN) et al.
CERN's North Area comprises several target and experimental systems and is a zone of interest for future development. Provision of beam to this area relies upon several beam-intercepting devices located in various branched transfer lines from the Super Proton Synchrotron. [...]

CERN Linac4 Chopper Dump: Operational Experience and Future Upgrades / Sharp, Calum (CERN) ; Andreu Muñoz, Pablo (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Costa, Gabriele (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Franqueira Ximenes, Rui (CERN) ; Grenier, Damien (CERN) ; Grenier-Boley, Edouard (CERN) ; Hunt, James (CERN) ; Krainer, Alexander (CERN) et al.
The Chopper Dump in the Linac4 accelerator at CERN is a beam-intercepting device responsible for the absorption of the 3 MeV H⁻ ion beam produced by the Linac4 source and deflected upstream by an electromagnetic chopper. It allows a portion of the beam, which would otherwise fall into the unstable region of the radiofrequency buckets in the Proton Synchrotron Booster, to be dumped at low energy with minimal induced radiation. [...]

Protection of extraction septa during asynchronous beam dumps in HL-LHC operation / Farina, E (CERN) ; Atanasov, M (CERN) ; Borburgh, J (CERN) ; Bracco, C (CERN) ; Dutheil, Y (CERN) ; Lechner, A (CERN) ; Maestre, J (CERN) ; Muñoz, P Andreu (CERN) ; Nuiry, F X (CERN) ; Schwarz, P (CERN) et al.
The LHC beam dump system was developed to safely and reliably dispose of the LHC beams at the end of physics fills or in case of emergency aborts. The beams are extracted by means of kicker magnets, deflecting the beams horizontally, and septa, which provide a vertical kick. [...]

Particle interactions with matter / Lechner, Anton (CERN)
With the steady advances in accelerator technology and new records in beam energy, intensity, brightness, power and luminosity, it is essential to limit adverse effects of beam losses for accelerator operation, equipment and personnel. Particle losses can quench superconducting magnets, induce single event effects in electronics, activate equipment, and alter material properties. [...]

The LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) Project aims at upgrading the systems in the LHC injection chain, to reliably deliver the beams required by the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). Given the challenging beam intensities and emittances, a review of the existing beam-intercepting devices is on-going, in order to assess heat loads and consequent thermo-mechanical stresses. [...]
