Protection of the LHC against Unsynchronised Beam Aborts / Goddard, B ; Assmann, R W ; Carlier, E ; Uythoven, J ; Wenninger, J ; Weterings, W
An unsynchronised beam abort in the LHC could damage downstream accelerator components, in particular the extraction septum magnets, the experimental low-beta triplet magnet apertures and the tertiary collimators. Although the LHC beam dumping system includes design features to minimise their frequency, such unsynchronised aborts cannot be excluded. [...]

Beam Halo on the LHC TCDQ Diluter System and Thermal Load on the Downstream Superconducting Magnets / Goddard, B ; Assmann, R W ; Presland, A ; Redaelli, S ; Robert-Démolaize, G ; Sarchiapone, L ; Weiler, T ; Weterings, W
The moveable single-jawed graphite TCDQ diluter must be positioned very close to the circulating LHC beam in order to prevent damage to downstream components in the event of an unsynchronised beam abort. A two-jawed graphite TCS.IR6 collimator forms part of the TCDQ system. [...]

LHC beam dumping system : Extraction channel layout and acceptance / Goddard, B (CERN) ; Gyr, M (CERN) ; Uythoven, J (CERN) ; Veness, R (CERN) ; Weterings, W (CERN)
The LHC beam dumping system must safely abort the LHC beams under all conditions, including those resulting from abnormal behaviour of machine elements or subsystems of the beam dumping system itself. The extraction channels must provide sufficient aperture both for the circulating and extracted beams, over the whole energy range and under various beam parameters. [...]

The New SPS Extraction Channel for LHC and CNGS / Goddard, B ; Knaus, P ; Schröder, G ; Weterings, W ; Uythoven, J
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso (CNGS) projects require the construction of a new fast-extraction system in the long straight section LSS4 of the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN. A conventional DC septum magnet will be used, in conjunction with the installation of horizontal and vertical extraction bumpers, main quadrupoles with enlarged apertures, extraction kicker magnets and additional hardware protection, instrumentation, controls and electronics. Dynamic Stresses in the LHC TCDS Diluter from 7 TeV Beam Loading / Goddard, B ; Massidda, L ; Presland, A ; Weterings, W
In the event of an unsynchronised beam abort, the MSD extraction septum of the LHC beam dumping system is protected from damage by the TCDS diluter. The simultaneous constraints of obtaining sufficient beam dilution while ensuring the survival of the TCDS make the design difficult, with high thermally induced dynamic stresses occurring in the material needed to attenuate the particle showers induced by the primary beam impact. [...]
