Dynamic Stresses in the LHC TCDS Diluter from 7 TeV Beam Loading / Goddard, B ; Massidda, L ; Presland, A ; Weterings, W
In the event of an unsynchronised beam abort, the MSD extraction septum of the LHC beam dumping system is protected from damage by the TCDS diluter. The simultaneous constraints of obtaining sufficient beam dilution while ensuring the survival of the TCDS make the design difficult, with high thermally induced dynamic stresses occurring in the material needed to attenuate the particle showers induced by the primary beam impact. Beam Halo on the LHC TCDQ Diluter System and Thermal Load on the Downstream Superconducting Magnets / Goddard, B ; Assmann, R W ; Presland, A ; Redaelli, S ; Robert-Démolaize, G ; Sarchiapone, L ; Weiler, T ; Weterings, W
The moveable single-jawed graphite TCDQ diluter must be positioned very close to the circulating LHC beam in order to prevent damage to downstream components in the event of an unsynchronised beam abort. A two-jawed graphite TCS.IR6 collimator forms part of the TCDQ system. [...]

Protection of the LHC against Unsynchronised Beam Aborts / Goddard, B ; Assmann, R W ; Carlier, E ; Uythoven, J ; Wenninger, J ; Weterings, W
An unsynchronised beam abort in the LHC could damage downstream accelerator components, in particular the extraction septum magnets, the experimental low-beta triplet magnet apertures and the tertiary collimators. Although the LHC beam dumping system includes design features to minimise their frequency, such unsynchronised aborts cannot be excluded. [...]

Conceptual Design of the LHC Beam Dumping Protection Elements TCDS and TCDQ / Goddard, B ; Riffaud, R ; Sans-Merce, M ; Weterings, W
The Beam Dumping System for the Large Hadron Collider, presently under construction at CERN, consists, per ring, of a set of horizontally deflecting extraction kicker magnets, vertically deflecting steel septa, dilution kickers and finally, a couple of hundred metres further downstream, an absorber block. A fixed diluter (TCDS) will protect the septa in the event of a beam dump that is not synchronised with the particle free gap or a spontaneous firing of the extraction kickers which will cause the beam to sweep over the septum. [...]

The Performance of the New TCDQ System in the LHC Beam Dumping Region / Presland, Andrew ; Goddard, Brennan ; Weterings, Wim
The superconducting quadrupole magnet Q4 and other downstream LHC machine elements risk destruction in the event of a beam dump that is not synchronised with the abort gap. In order to protect these elements, a single sided mobile graphite diluter block TCDQ, in combination with a two-sided secondary collimator TCS and iron shield TCDQM, will be installed in front of Q4. Dynamic structural analysis of the TPSG4 & TPSG6 beam diluters / Massidda, L ; Mura, F ; Kadi, Y ; Balhan, B
In this report we present the technical specification for the numerical model and the study of the dynamic structural behaviour of the beam diluter elements (TPSG4 & 6) protecting the extraction septum magnets (MSE & MST) in the event of an asynchronous firing of the extraction kickers (MKE). [...]

Design of the LHC Beam Dump Entrance Window / Veness, R ; Goddard, B ; Massidda, L ; Mathot, S J ; Presland, A
7 TeV proton beams from the LHC are ejected through a 600 m long beam dump transfer line vacuum chamber to a beam dump block. The dump block is contained within an inert gas-filled vessel to prevent a possible fire risk. [...]
