Radiological clearance of historical waste from particle accelerators / Svihrova, Lucie (CERN ; Prague, Tech. U.) ; Bauer, Kerstin (CERN) ; Bruno, Luca (CERN) ; Dumont, Gerald (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN) ; Menaa, Nabil (CERN) ; Silari, Marco (CERN) ; Ulrici, Luisa (CERN)
This paper presents a detailed methodology for reclassifying radioactive material from particle accelerators as non-radioactive, drawing on experiences at CERN. During particle accelerator decommissioning, the waste is classified based on its radioactivity level where the very-low-level activity material is the potential clearance candidate. [...]

In-toto non-destructive assay methodology for the elimination of metallic waste from particle accelerators after melting / Dyrcz, Patrycja (CERN) ; Menaa, Nabil (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN) ; Theis, Chris (CERN) ; Bruno, Luca (CERN) ; Dumont, Gerald (CERN) ; Charousset, Renaud (CERN)
Melting of metallic waste reduces the waste volume, allows more accurate radiological characterization, and minimizes handling at the waste production site. This paper proposes a new non-destructive assay methodology to radiologically characterize low- and intermediate-level (LILW) waste before melting. [...]

Radiological characterization for the disposal of a decommissioned LHC external beam dump at CERN / Infantino, Angelo (CERN) ; Harbron, Richard William (CERN) ; Mouret, Renaud (CERN) ; Bertreix, Philippe (CERN) ; Bernardes, Ana-Paula (CERN) ; Bruno, Luca (CERN) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Dumont, Gerald (CERN) ; El-Idrissi, Safouane (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN) et al.
During the last Long Shutdown, a scheduled maintenance period between physics runs, the two Large Hadron Collider (LHC) beam dumps were replaced with upgraded spares modules. It was then decided to conduct an in-house autopsy and a post-irradiation examination of the removed dumps to extract information essential for the 3rd LHC physics run and to aid the design of new generations of beam dumps able to cope with future upgrades of the LHC. [...]

Radiological characterisation for the clearance of burnable waste produced at CERN / Harbron, Richard (CERN) ; Charousset, Renaud (CERN) ; Dumont, Gerald (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN) ; Menaa, Nabil (CERN) ; Giunio Pisano, Paolo (CERN) ; Theis, Christian (CERN)
Burnable waste produced at CERN during upgrading, maintenance and dismantling campaigns may be contaminated with radioactive nuclides produced through activation of accelerator components. Here, we present a methodology for the radiological characterisation of burnable waste, which takes into account the wide range of potential activation conditions (beam energy, material composition, location, irradiation and waiting time). An enhanced characterization process for the elimination of very low level radioactive waste in particle accelerators / Frosio, Thomas (CERN) ; Bertreix, Philippe (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN) ; Menaa, Nabil (CERN) ; Michaud, Régis (CERN) ; Rimlinger, Maeva (CERN) ; Theis, Chris (CERN) ; Ulrici, Luisa (CERN) ; Zaffora, Biagio (CERN)
The elimination of very low level waste towards the French national repository requires their radiological characterization to estimate the radionuclide inventory and the associated activities within a waste package. Such characterization is performed by means of activation calculations and measurements. [...]

Classification of radiological objects at the exit of accelerators with a dose-rate constraint / Frosio, Thomas (CERN) ; Dumont, Gerald (CERN) ; Froeschl, Robert (CERN) ; Iliopoulou, Elpida (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN) ; Menaa, Nabil (CERN) ; Roesler, Stefan (CERN) ; Theis, Chris (CERN) ; Vincke, Heinz (CERN) ; Vincke, Helmut (CERN)
Maintenance activities and operations of high-energy particle accelerators can lead to the collection of radioactive equipment as well as waste materials. In order to ensure their proper classification as radioactive or non-radioactive, one has to quantify the activities of radionuclides produced. [...]

Activation experiment at the H4IRRAD facility: A comparison between experimental data, FLUKA and ActiWiz predictions after 15 days of cooling time / Duchemin, Charlotte (CERN) ; La Torre, Francesco (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN) ; Silari, Marco (CERN)
An experiment was carried out in June 2011 at the H4IRRAD facility, which allows to reproduce the radiation fields commonly encountered in the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The purpose of this study was to create a set of experimental activation data that can be used to benchmark Monte Carlo codes and now the analytical ActiWiz software package, both extensively used by CERN’s Radiation Protection Group. On the holistic validation of electronic materials compound for irradiation study - Experimental and calculated results / Frosio, Thomas (CERN) ; Menaa, Nabil (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN) ; Theis, Chris (CERN)
Due to the large variations of chemical compositions in electronic material, the estimation of the radionuclide inventory following irradiation represents a technical challenge at CERN high-energy particle accelerators. In particular, the activation of printed circuit boards is of concern to the CERN experiments as they are widely used for various purposes ranging from safety systems to sub-detector controls. [...]

Qualification of the activities measured by gamma spectrometry on unitary items of intermediate-level radioactive waste from particle accelerators / Dyrcz, Patrycja (CERN) ; Frosio, Thomas (CERN) ; Menaa, Nabil (CERN) ; Magistris, Matteo (CERN) ; Theis, Chris (CERN)
In the frame of maintenance, upgrade and dismantling activities, activated equipment are removed from the accelerator complex and require characterization in view of their disposal as radioactive waste. The characterization process consists of a series of radiation measurements, complemented by analytical studies, which quantify the activity of radionuclides inside an object. [...]
