At the end of Long Shutdown 2 (LS2), in 2020 Linac4 became the new injector of CERN’s proton accelerator complex. The previous version of the Linac4 H⁻ ion source (IS03), produced an operational pulsed peak beam current of 35 mA, resulting in 27 mA after the Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ). [...]

A caesiated RF driven source delivers H$^{-}$ ions that, after stripping at the end of the 160 MeV H$^{-}$ linear injector, provides protons to CERN's accelerator complex including LHC, where the protons reached a record energy of 6.8 TeV. In Caesiated RF sources, H$^{-}$ ions are produced via dissociative attachment of electrons onto roto-vibrationally excited H$_{2}$-molecules (volume) and re-emission as negative ions of protons or hydrogen atoms colliding on a low work function caesiated molybdenum plasma electrode (surface). Linac3, LEIR and PS Performance with Ions in 2021 and Prospects for 2022 / Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Albright, Simon (CERN) ; Alemany-Fernández, Reyes (CERN) ; Alves, Diogo (CERN) ; Angoletta, Maria Elena (CERN) ; Barrientos, Diego (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Bellodi, Giulia (CERN) ; Bertolo, Sebastien (CERN) ; Bodart, Dominique (CERN) et al.
CERN accelerators underwent a period of long shutdown from the end of 2018 to 2020. During this time frame, significant hardware and software upgrades have been put in place to increase the performance of both proton and ion accelerator chains in the High Luminosity LHC era. [...]

Linac4 H$^-$ source R&D;: Cusp free ICP and magnetron discharge / Lettry, J (CERN) ; Bertolo, S (CERN) ; Fantz, U (Garching, Max Planck Inst.) ; Guida, R (CERN) ; Kapusniak, K (CERN) ; Di Lorenzo, F (CERN) ; Machado, C (CERN) ; Mastrostefano, C (CERN) ; Minea, T (LPGP, Orsay) ; O'Neil, M (CERN) et al.
The 2MHz radio-frequency inductively coupled plasma heating (ICP RF) of Linac4’s IS03 H- source is more efficient without its octupole cusp in offset hallbach configuration. This was shown by Particle in cell Monte-Carlo (PICMC) simulation using the NINJA software [1] and confirmed by plasma characterization via optical emission spectroscopy [2,3], an easier plasma ignition is also anticipated. An H$^{-}$ ion source is being operated at the new 160 MeV linear injector (Linac4) of the CERN accelerator complex. The source’s plasma is of the Radio Frequency Inductively Coupled Plasma type (RF-ICP), without magnetic cusp and runs with Cs-loss compensation 1 . [...]

Linac4, a 160 MeV, 352.2 MHz linear accelerator, has been fully commissioned and will take its place as injector to the CERN chain of accelerators during the long shutdown (LS2) in 2019-2020. In the past year, it has been providing beam during a test run to assess its reliability in view of the connection to the LHC proton injector chain. [...]

MEDeGUN commissioning results / Breitenfeldt, M (CERN) ; di Lorenzo, F (CERN) ; Pikin, A (Brookhaven Natl. Lab.) ; Pitters, J (CERN) ; Wenander, F (CERN)
MEDeGUN [1] is an electron gun to be used in an Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS) designed to serve as C6+ source for LINAC-based 2nd generation hadron therapy facilities [2]. The latter require short pulses of at least 1*108 particles at a repetition rate of 400 Hz, which exceeds the possibilities of currently used electron cyclotron resonance ion sources (ECRIS) and EBISes. [...]

Linac4, the new CERN H$^-$ injector to the Proton Synchrotron Booster, has been commissioned and has delivered a beam intensity and quality calculated to be sufficient to produce the standard beams for LHC and the high intensity beams for ISOLDE when connected. The beam current is nevertheless half of what is foreseen and the problem has been identified at the low energy end, between the extraction and the matching to the RFQ. [...]
