The LHC is the world’s largest particle accelerator and uses a complex set of sophisticated and highly reliable machine protection systems to ensure a safe operation with high availability for particle physics production. The data gathered during several years of successful operation allow the use of data-driven methods to assist experts in finding anomalies in the behavior of those protection systems. [...]

A Coupled A–H Formulation for Magneto-Thermal Transients in High-Temperature Superconducting Magnets / Bortot, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Auchmann, Bernhard (CERN) ; Garcia, Idoia Cortes (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; De Gersem, Herbert (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Maciejewski, Michal (CERN) ; Mentink, Matthias (CERN) ; Schöps, Sebastian (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Van Nugteren, Jeroen (CERN) ; Verweij, Arjan P. (CERN)
The application of high-temperature superconductors to accelerator magnets for future particle colliders is under study. Numerical methods are crucial for an accurate evaluation of the complex dynamical behavior of the magnets, especially concerning the magnetic field quality and thermal behavior. [...]

Simulation of a quench event in the upgraded High-Luminosity LHC Main dipole circuit including the 11 T Nb$_{3}$Sn dipole magnets / Fernandez Navarro, Alejandro Manuel (CERN) ; Maciejewski, Michal (CERN) ; Verweij, Arjan P (CERN) ; Bortot, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Mentink, Matthias (CERN) ; Prioli, Marco (CERN) ; Auchmann, Bernhard (PSI, Villigen) ; Izquierdo Bermudez, Susana (CERN) ; Ravaioli, Emmanuele (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Yammine, Samer (CERN)
To achieve the goal of increased luminosity, two out of eight main dipole circuits of the accelerator will be reconfigured in the coming LHC upgrade by replacing one standard 14.3-m long, Nb-Ti-based, 8.3 T dipole magnet by two 5.3-m long, Nb$_{3}$Sn-based, 11.2 T magnets (MBH). The modified dipole circuits will contain 153 Nb-Ti magnets and two MBH magnets. [...]

A 2-D Finite-Element Model for Electro-Thermal Transients in Accelerator Magnets / Bortot, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Auchmann, Bernhard (PSI, Villigen ; CERN) ; Garcia, Idoia Cortes (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Fernandez Navarro, Alejandro Manuel (CERN) ; Maciejewski, Michal (CERN) ; Prioli, Marco (CERN) ; Schöps, Sebastian (Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Verweij, Arjan (CERN)
Superconducting accelerator magnets require sophisticated monitoring and means of protection due to the large energy stored in the magnetic field. Numerical simulations play a crucial role in understanding transient phenomena occurring within the magnet, and can, therefore, help to prevent disruptive consequences. [...]

Automated lumped-element simulation framework for modelling of transient effects in superconducting magnets / Maciejewski, Michal (CERN) ; Ravaioli, Emmanuele (CERN) ; Auchmann, Bernhard (CERN) ; Verweij, Arjan (CERN) ; Bartoszewicz, Andrzej (Lodz, Tech. U.)
Abstract: The paper describes a flexible, extensible, and user-friendly framework to model electrothermal transients occurring in superconducting magnets. Simulations are a fundamental tool for assessing the performance of a magnet and its protection system against the effects of a sudden transition from the superconducting to the normal state (also known as a quench). A Consistent Simulation of Electrothermal Transients in Accelerator Circuits / Bortot, Lorenzo (CERN) ; Maciejewski, Michal (CERN) ; Prioli, Marco (CERN) ; Navarro, Alejando M Fernandez (CERN) ; Ghini, Jonas Blomberg (CERN) ; Auchmann, Bernhard (CERN) ; Verweij, Arjan P (CERN)
Abstract: Transient effects occurring in a superconducting accelerator circuit can be correctly simulated only if the models consistently account for the electrothermodynamic coupling between the magnets, the protection systems, and the remaining network. We present a framework based on the idea of cosimulation. [...]
