Experimental investigation under laser-driven shocks of the dynamic behavior of materials for beam-intercepting devices in particle accelerators / Accettura, C (CERN) ; Baudin, L (CERN) ; Bertarelli, A (CERN) ; Brabetz, C (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Carra, F (CERN) ; Martynenko, A S (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Morena, A (Polytech. Turin) ; Moros, A (CERN) ; Peroni, L (Polytech. Turin) ; Scapin, M (Polytech. Turin) et al.
In the present work the results of an extensive experimental campaign in which laser-shocks were used to assess the mechanical strength of graphitic materials are presented. The aim of the project was to study innovative advanced materials used in high energy particle accelerators for beam intercepting devices (BIDs), such as collimators, absorber blocks and dumps. [...]

Dynamic response to short-pulsed U-ion beams of material candidates for vacuum beam windows manufacturing / Notari, Lorenzo (Polytech. Turin) ; Pasquali, Michele (Rome U.) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Losasso, Marcello (CERN) ; Guardia-Valenzuela, Jorge (CERN) ; Tomut, Marilena (Munster U. ; Darmstadt, GSI)
The introduction of next-generation extremely energetic particle accelerator facilities, such as the High-Luminosity upgrade of the LHC (HL-LHC) or the proposed future circular collider (FCC), will dramatically increase the energy stored in the circulating particle beams. This will critically affect the thermo-physical and mechanical properties of the materials adopted, possibly compromising their reliability during the operating lifetime. [...]

Various graphite targets with a tantalum core were exposed to 440 GeV pulsed proton beams at the HiRadMat facility at CERN. )e dynamic response was investigated by monitoring the surface velocity of the samples by laser Doppler vibrometry. )e study comprises different graphite grades, such as polycrystalline, expanded and carbon-fiber reinforced graphite, and low-density graphitic foams, all candidates for beam-intercepting devices in high-power accelerators. Radiation-Induced Effects on LHC Collimator Materials under Extreme Beam Conditions / Quaranta, E. (CERN ; Milan Polytechnic) ; Bertarelli A. (CERN) ; Bunk, K. (Darmstadt, GSI ; Goethe U., Frankfurt (main)) ; Carra, F. (CERN ; Turin Polytechnic) ; Guardia Valenzuela, J. (CERN ; U. Zaragoza (main)) ; Hermes, P. D. (CERN ; U. Munster) ; Hubert, C. (Darmstadt, GSI ; Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Nocera, P. (Brookhaven) ; Porth, C. (Darmstadt, GSI ; Darmstadt, Tech. U.) ; Redaelli, S. (CERN) et al.
Over the last years, several samples of present and novel LHC collimator materials were irradiated under various beam conditions (using protons, fast neutrons, light and heavy ions at different energies and fluences) in different facilities around the world. This was achieved through an international collaboration including many companies and laboratories over the world. [...]

Material-related issues at high-power and high-energy ion beam facilities / Bender, M. (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Severin, D. (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Tomut, M. (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Trautmann, C. (Darmstadt, GSI ; Darmstadt, Tech. U.)
When solids are exposed to energetic ions (MeV-GeV), their physical and chemical structure can be severely modified. The change is governed by ultrafast dynamical processes starting from the deposition of large energy densities, electronic excitation and ionization processes, and finally damage creation in the atomic lattice system. [...]

Phase field modelling of dynamic thermal fracture in the context of irradiation damage / Schlüter, Alexander (Kaiserslautern U.) ; Kuhn, Charlotte (Kaiserslautern U.) ; Müller, Ralf (Kaiserslautern U.) ; Tomut, Marilena (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Trautmann , Christina (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Weick, Helmut (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Plate, Carolin (Kaiserslautern U.)
This work presents a continuum mechanics approach to model fracturing processes in brittle materials that are subjected to rapidly applied high-temperature gradients. Such a type of loading typically occurs when a solid is exposed to an intense high-energy particle beam that deposits a large amount of energy into a small sample volume. [...]
