Match Report

A blistering opening term enabled Hawthorn to run out comfortable winners on against West Coast on Friday night and claim the minor premiership. The win ensured the Hawks finished at the head of the ladder for the first time since 1989, a premiership year.

The victory was set up by Lance Franklin, whose four first-quarter goals sent an ominous message to the coaches and defenders of the other top eight teams. Franklin's haul helped the Hawks to a 34-point lead at quarter time, which they comfortably protected for the rest of the evening. West Coast could take solace from the fact that they outscored the Hawks for the remainder of the evening but nevertheless, the loss means a fifth-placed finish, and the Eagles will face North Melbourne at home in a cut-throat final next Saturday.

Hawthorn will take on Collingwood on Friday night in the First Qualifying Final, a highly anticipated match following the Magpies' last gasp win against the Hawks in last year's Preliminary Final.

Best for the Hawks were Sam Mitchell, Grant Birchall and Franklin, while Scott Selwood and Beau Waters were good for the Eagles. West Coast's dynamic ruck duo of Cox and Natanui were kept quiet by the Hawthorn combination of Hale and Roughead. The win was soured for Hawthorn by what looked to be a relatively serious hamstring injury to Brent Guerra.

COACHES' COMMENTS
Alastair Clarkson (Haw): It was a finals-type intensity with lots of pressure, great tackling by both sides tonight. It was a fierce contest.

John Worsfold (WC): They [Hawthorn] scored too easily in the first quarter. For the rest of the game, we outscored them and there was not much in it across the board.

Umpires: Stevic, Nicholls, McInerney
