Match Report

Torrential rain and a Geelong onslaught ruined Brisbane Lions legend Simon Black’s 300th game. If not for three last quarter goals, it could have been a record-breaking night for the Lions - but for all the wrong reasons. Brisbane couldn’t adapt to the monsoonal rain, failing to kick a goal until Ash McGrath kicked truly 20 minutes into the third quarter. Despite that, the Lions were competitive and actually led the inside-50 count - and had more scoring shots - but couldn’t convert that to the scoreboard. On the other hand, the Cats made the most of their opportunites, particularly Tom Hawkins who finished with six goals, including the first three of the match. He took his season goal tally to 18, to lead the race for the Coleman Medal. Andrew Raines ran with Cats captain Joel Selwood all night, with things getting extremely heated at times. Both players were cited by the Match Review Panel, Selwood later escaping without punishment, while Raines received a three-match suspension, with the option of that being downgraded to one week after a guilty plea.

COACHES COMMENTS
Michael Voss (Bris): On a wet night, they made the most of limited opportunities. We had lots of chances but in the end we just didn't defend our goals well enough. The pleasing part was I asked the guys to finish the game strong and they did that.

Chris Scott (Geel): We came to play what we think is a competitive team … they’re pretty honest. And the conditions made it even more of an honest contest - really contested and hard to get possession and play free-flowing footy. Given those things, we got what we hoped we’d get out of it.

Umpires: Kamolins, Ryan, McInerney
