A scintillating bolometer technology based on $^{100}$Mo-enriched lithium molybdate (Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$) crystals has been developed by LUMINEU to search for neutrinoless double-beta ($0ν2β$) decay of $^{100}$Mo. The results of several low temperature tests at underground environments have proved the reproducibility of high detector performance and crystal radiopurity: in particular $\sim$5--6~keV FWHM energy resolution and at least 9$σ$ rejection of $α$'s in the vicinity of the $0ν2β$ decay of $^{100}$Mo (3034 keV) and below 10~$μ$Bq/kg bulk activity of $^{228}$Th and $^{226}$Ra. A modest acquired exposure (0.1~kg$\times$yr) is a limiting factor of the LUMINEU experiment sensitivity to the $0ν2β$ decay half-life of $^{100}$Mo ($T_{1/2}$ $\geq$ 0.7$\times$10$^{23}$ yr at 90\% C.L.), however the two-neutrino $2β$ decay has been measured with the best up to-date accuracy, $T_{1/2}$ = $\left[6.92 \pm 0.06(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.36(\mathrm{syst.})\right] \times 10^{18}$ yr. The applicability of the LUMINEU technology for a tonne-scale $0ν2β$ decay bolometric project CUPID is going to be demonstrated by the CUPID-0/Mo experiment with $\sim$5~kg of $^{100}$Mo embedded in forty 0.2~kg Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers. A first phase of the experiment with twenty Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ detectors is in preparation at the Modane underground laboratory (France) to start by the end of 2017.

This paper reports on the development of a technology involving $^{100}$Mo-enriched scintillating bolometers, compatible with the goals of CUPID, a proposed next-generation bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay. Large mass ($\sim$1~kg), high optical quality, radiopure $^{100}$Mo-containing zinc and lithium molybdate crystals have been produced and used to develop high performance single detector modules based on 0.2--0.4~kg scintillating bolometers. In particular, the energy resolution of the lithium molybdate detectors near the $Q$-value of the double-beta transition of $^{100}$Mo (3034~keV) is 4--6~keV FWHM. The rejection of the $α$-induced dominant background above 2.6~MeV is better than 8$σ$. Less than 10~$μ$Bq/kg activity of $^{232}$Th ($^{228}$Th) and $^{226}$Ra in the crystals is ensured by boule recrystallization. The potential of $^{100}$Mo-enriched scintillating bolometers to perform high sensitivity double-beta decay searches has been demonstrated with only 10~kg$\times$d exposure: the two neutrino double-beta decay half-life of $^{100}$Mo has been measured with the up-to-date highest accuracy as $T_{1/2}$ = [6.90 $\pm$ 0.15(stat.) $\pm$ 0.37(syst.)] $\times$ 10$^{18}$~yr. Both crystallization and detector technologies favor lithium molybdate, which has been selected for the ongoing construction of the CUPID-0/Mo demonstrator, containing several kg of $^{100}$Mo.

We present the performances of two 92% enriched $^{130}$TeO$_2$ crystals operated as thermal bolometers in view of a next generation experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{130}$Te. The crystals, 435 g each, show an energy resolution, evaluated at the 2615 keV $γ$-line of $^{208}$Tl, of 6.5 and 4.3 keV FWHM. The only observable internal radioactive contamination arises from $^{238}$U (15 and 8 $μ$Bq/kg, respectively). The internal activity of the most problematic nuclei for neutrinoless double beta decay, $^{226}$Ra and $^{228}$Th, are both evaluated as $<$3.1 $μ$Bq/kg for one crystal and $<$2.3 $μ$Bq/kg for the second. Thanks to the readout of the weak Cherenkov light emitted by $β/γ$ particles by means of Neganov-Luke bolometric light detectors we were able to perform an event-by-event identification of $β/γ$ events with a 95% acceptance level, while establishing a rejection factor of 98.21% and 99.99% for $α$ particles.

Despite a substantial pile-up effect due to above-ground operation, the detector demonstrated a high energy resolution (2-7 keV FWHM in 0.2-2.6 MeV $γ$ energy range), a powerful particle identification capability and a high level of internal radiopurity. These results prove that cadmium tungstate is an extremely promising detector material for a next-generation neutrinoless double-beta decay bolometric experiment, like that proposed in the CUPID project (CUORE Upgrade with Particle IDentification).

Random coincidences of nuclear events can be one of the main background sources in low-temperature calorimetric experiments looking for neutrinoless double-beta decay, especially in those searches based on scintillating bolometers embedding the promising double-beta candidate $^{100}$Mo, because of the relatively short half-life of the two-neutrino double-beta decay of this nucleus. We show in this work that randomly coinciding events of the two-neutrino double decay of $^{100}$Mo in enriched Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ detectors can be effectively discriminated by pulse-shape analysis in the light channel if the scintillating bolometer is provided with a Neganov-Luke light detector, which can improve the signal-to-noise ratio by a large factor, assumed here at the level of $\sim 750$ on the basis of preliminary experimental results obtained with these devices. The achieved pile-up rejection efficiency results in a very low contribution, of the order of $\sim 6\times10^{-5}$ counts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$y), to the background counting rate in the region of interest for a large volume ($\sim 90$ cm$^3$) Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ detector. This background level is very encouraging in view of a possible use of the Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ solution for a bolometric tonne-scale next-generation experiment as that proposed in the CUPID project.

New improved limits on the double beta processes in $^{106}$Cd have been set on the level of $10^{20}- 10^{21}$ yr after 13085 h of data taking. In particular, the half-life limit on the two neutrino electron capture with positron emission, $T_{1/2}^{2ν\varepsilonβ^+}\geq 1.1\times 10^{21}$ yr, has reached the region of theoretical predictions. With this half-life limit the effective nuclear matrix element for the $2ν\varepsilonβ^+$ decay is bounded as $M^{2ν\varepsilonβ^+}_{eff}\le 1.1$. The resonant neutrinoless double electron captures to the 2718 keV, 2741 keV and 2748 keV excited states of $^{106}$Pd are restricted at the level of $T_{1/2} \geq (8.5\times10^{20}-1.4\times10^{21}$) yr.

We present the results of a search for elastic scattering from galactic dark matter in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) in the 4-30 GeV/$c^2$ mass range. We make use of a 582 kg-day fiducial exposure from an array of 800 g Germanium bolometers equipped with a set of interleaved electrodes with full surface coverage. We searched specifically for $\sim 2.5-20$ keV nuclear recoils inside the detector fiducial volume. As an illustration the number of observed events in the search for 5 (resp. 20) GeV/$c^2$ WIMPs are 9 (resp. 4), compared to an expected background of 6.1 (resp. 1.4). A 90% CL limit of $4.3\times 10^{-40}$ cm$^2$ (resp. $9.4\times 10^{-44}$ cm$^2$) is set on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-section for 5 (resp. 20) GeV/$c^2$ WIMPs. This result represents a 41-fold improvement with respect to the previous EDELWEISS-II low-mass WIMP search for 7 GeV/$c^2$ WIMPs. The derived constraint is in tension with hints of WIMP signals from some recent experiments, thus confirming results obtained with different detection techniques.

The half-life of $^{116}$Cd relatively to the two neutrino double beta decay is measured with the highest up-to-date accuracy $T_{1/2}=(2.62\pm0.14)\times10^{19}$ yr. The sensitivity of the experiment to the neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{116}$Cd to the ground state of $^{116}$Sn is estimated as $T_{1/2} \geq 1.9\times10^{23}$ yr at 90\% CL, which corresponds to the effective Majorana neutrino mass limit $\langle m_ν\rangle \leq (1.2-1.8)$ eV. New limits are obtained for the double beta decay of $^{116}$Cd to the excited levels of $^{116}$Sn, and for the neutrinoless double beta decay with emission of majorons.

The LUMINEU is designed to investigate the possibility to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{100}$Mo by means of a large array of scintillating bolometers based on ZnMoO$_4$ crystals enriched in $^{100}$Mo. High energy resolution and relatively fast detectors, which are able to measure both the light and the heat generated upon the interaction of a particle in a crystal, are very promising for the recognition and rejection of background events. We present the LUMINEU concepts and the experimental results achieved aboveground and underground with large-mass natural and enriched crystals. The measured energy resolution, the $α/β$ discrimination power and the radioactive internal contamination are all within the specifications for the projected final LUMINEU sensitivity. Simulations and preliminary results confirm that the LUMINEU technology can reach zero background in the region of interest (around 3 MeV) with exposures of the order of hundreds kg$\times$years, setting the bases for a next generation $0\nu2β$ decay experiment capable to explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern.

The AMoRE (Advanced Mo-based Rare process Experiment) project is a series of experiments that use advanced cryogenic techniques to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of \mohundred. The work is being carried out by an international collaboration of researchers from eight countries. These searches involve high precision measurements of radiation-induced temperature changes and scintillation light produced in ultra-pure \Mo[100]-enriched and \Ca[48]-depleted calcium molybdate ($\mathrm{^{48depl}Ca^{100}MoO_4}$) crystals that are located in a deep underground laboratory in Korea. The \mohundred nuclide was chosen for this \zeronubb decay search because of its high $Q$-value and favorable nuclear matrix element. Tests have demonstrated that \camo crystals produce the brightest scintillation light among all of the molybdate crystals, both at room and at cryogenic temperatures. $\mathrm{^{48depl}Ca^{100}MoO_4}$ crystals are being operated at milli-Kelvin temperatures and read out via specially developed metallic-magnetic-calorimeter (MMC) temperature sensors that have excellent energy resolution and relatively fast response times. The excellent energy resolution provides good discrimination of signal from backgrounds, and the fast response time is important for minimizing the irreducible background caused by random coincidence of two-neutrino double-beta decay events of \mohundred nuclei. Comparisons of the scintillating-light and phonon yields and pulse shape discrimination of the phonon signals will be used to provide redundant rejection of alpha-ray-induced backgrounds. An effective Majorana neutrino mass sensitivity that reaches the expected range of the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy, i.e., 20-50 meV, could be achieved with a 200~kg array of $\mathrm{^{48depl}Ca^{100}MoO_4}$ crystals operating for three years.

The data collected with a radioactively pure ZnWO$_4$ crystal scintillator (699 g) in low background measurements during 2130 h at the underground (3600 m w.e.) Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (INFN, Italy) were used to set a limit on possible concentration of superheavy eka-W (seaborgium Sg, Z = 106) in the crystal. Assuming that one of the daughters in a chain of decays of the initial Sg nucleus decays with emission of high energy $α$ particle ($Q_α> 8$ MeV) and analyzing the high energy part of the measured $α$ spectrum, the limit N(Sg)/N(W) < 5.5 $\times$ 10$^{-14}$ atoms/atom at 90% C.L. was obtained (for Sg half-life of 10$^9$ yr). In addition, a limit on the concentration of eka-Bi was set by analysing the data collected with a large BGO scintillation bolometer in an experiment performed by another group [L. Cardani et al., JINST 7 (2012) P10022]: N(eka-Bi)/N(Bi) < 1.1 $\times$ 10$^{-13}$ atoms/atom with 90% C.L. Both the limits are comparable with those obtained in recent experiments which instead look for spontaneous fission of superheavy elements or use the accelerator mass spectrometry.

Advanced ZnMoO$_4$ crystal scintillators with mass of $\sim$~0.3 kg were developed and Zn$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystal from enriched $^{100}$Mo was produced for the first time by using the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. One ZnMoO$_4$ scintillator and two samples (59 g and 63 g) cut from the enriched boule were tested aboveground at milli-Kelvin temperature as scintillating bolometers showing a high detection performance. The first results of the low background measurements with three ZnMoO$_4$ and two enriched detectors installed in the EDELWEISS set-up at the Modane Underground Laboratory (France) are presented.

Large lithium molybdate (Li$_2$MoO$_4$) crystal boules were produced by using the low thermal gradient Czochralski growth technique from deeply purified molybdenum. A small sample from one of the boules was preliminary characterized in terms of X-ray-induced and thermally-excited luminescence. A large cylindrical crystalline element (with a size of $\oslash 40\times40$ mm) was used to fabricate a scintillating bolometer, which was operated aboveground at $\sim 15$ mK by using a pulse-tube cryostat housing a high-power dilution refrigerator. The excellent detector performance in terms of energy resolution and $α$ background suppression along with preliminary positive indications on the radiopurity of this material show the potentiality of Li$_2$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers for low-counting experiment to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo.

The half-life of $^{212}$Po (present in the crystal scintillator due to contamination by radium) was measured as $T_{1/2}(^{212}$Po) = 298.8$\pm$0.8(stat.)$\pm$1.4(syst.) ns by analysis of the events' pulse profiles. The $^{222}$Rn nuclide is known as 100% decaying via emission of $α$ particle with $T_{1/2}$ = 3.82 d; however, its $β$ decay is also energetically allowed with $Q_β= 24\pm21$ keV. Search for decay chains of events with specific pulse shapes characteristic for $α$ or for $β/γ$ signals and with known energies and time differences allowed us to set, for the first time, the limit on the branching ratio of $^{222}$Rn relatively to $β$ decay as $B_β< 0.13$% at 90% C.L. (equivalent to limit on partial half-life $T_{1/2}^β> 8.0$ y). Half-life limits of $^{212}$Pb, $^{222}$Rn and $^{226}$Ra relatively to $2β$ decays are also improved in comparison with the earlier results.

The LUMINEU project aims at performing a demonstrator underground experiment searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay of the isotope $^{100}$Mo embedded in zinc molybdate (ZnMoO$_4$) scintillating bolometers. In this context, a zinc molybdate crystal boule enriched in $^{100}$Mo to 99.5\% with a mass of 171 g was grown for the first time by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. The production cycle provided a high yield (the crystal boule mass was 84\% of initial charge) and an acceptable level -- around 4\% -- of irrecoverable losses of the costy enriched material. Two crystals of 59 g and 63 g, obtained from the enriched boule, were tested aboveground at milli-Kelvin temperature as scintillating bolometers. They showed a high detection performance, equivalent to that of previously developed natural ZnMoO$_4$ detectors. These results pave the way to future sensitive searches based on the LUMINEU technology, capable to approach and explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern.

The LUMINEU program aims at performing a pilot experiment on neutrinoless double beta decay of 100Mo using radiopure ZnMoO4 crystals operated as scintillating bolometers. Growth of high quality radiopure crystals is a complex task, since there are no commercially available molybdenum compounds with the required levels of purity and radioactive contamination. This paper discusses approaches to purify molybdenum and synthesize compound for high quality radiopure ZnMoO4 crystal growth. A combination of a double sublimation (with addition of zinc molybdate) with subsequent recrystallization in aqueous solutions (using zinc molybdate as a collector) was used. Zinc molybdate crystals up to 1.5 kg were grown by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique, their optical, luminescent, diamagnetic, thermal and bolometric properties were tested.

Cadmium tungstate crystal scintillators enriched in $^{116}$Cd to 82% ($^{116}$CdWO$_4$, total mass of $\approx$1.2 kg) are used to search for 2$β$ decay of $^{116}$Cd deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN (Italy). The radioactive contamination of the $^{116}$CdWO$_4$ crystals has been studied carefully to reconstruct the background of the detector. The measured half-life of $^{116}$Cd relatively to 2$ν$2$β$ decay is $T^{2\nu2β}_{1/2}$ = [2.8 $\pm$ 0.05(stat.) $\pm$ 0.4(syst.)] $\times$ 10$^{19}$ yr, in agreement with the results of previous experiments. The obtained limit on the 0$ν$2$β$ decay of $^{116}$Cd (considering the data of the last 8696 h run with an advanced background 0.12(2) counts/yr/kg/keV in the energy interval 2.7-2.9 MeV) is $T_{1/2} \ge 1.0 \times 10^{23}$ yr at 90% C.L. The sensitivity of the experiment to the $0\nu2β$ process is $\lim T_{1/2} = 3 \times 10^{23}$ yr at 90% C.L. over 5 years of the measurements and it can be advanced (by further reduction of the background by a factor 3-30) to the level of $\lim T_{1/2} = (0.5-1.5) \times 10^{24}$ yr for the same period of the data taking.

In particular, the best T1/2 limits were obtained for double beta processes in 96Ru and 104Ru. Several isotopes, which potentially decay through different double beta decay channels, including also possible resonant double electron captures, were investigated for the first time (156Dy, 158Dy, 184Os, 192Os, 190Pt, 198Pt). Search for resonant absorption of solar 7Li axions in a LiF crystal gave the best limit for the mass of 7Li axions (< 8.6 keV). Rare alpha decay of 190Pt to the first excited level of 186Os (Eexc = 137.2 keV) was observed for the first time.

(Italy). Ruthenium samples with masses of about (0.5-0.7) kg were measured with the help of ultra-low background high purity Ge gamma ray spectrometry. After 2162 h of data taking the samples were deeply purified to reduce the internal contamination of 40K. The last part of the data has been accumulated over 5479 h. New improved half life limits on 2β+/εβ+/2ε processes in 96Ru have been established on the level of 10^{20} yr, in particular for decays to the ground state of 96Mo: T1/2(2ν2β+) > 1.4 10^{20} yr, T1/2(2νεβ+) > 8.0 10^{19} yr and T1/2(0ν2K) > 1.0 10^{21} yr (all limits are at 90% C.L.). The resonant neutrinoless double electron captures to the 2700.2 keV and 2712.7 keV excited states of 96Mo are restricted as: T1/2(0νKL) > 2.0 10^{20} yr and T1/2(0ν2L) > 3.6 10^{20} yr, respectively. Various two neutrino and neutrinoless 2β half lives of 96Ru have been estimated in the framework of the QRPA approach. In addition, the T1/2 limit for 0ν2β- transitions of 104Ru to the first excited state of 104Pd has been set as > 6.5 10^{20} yr.

After 2741 h of data taking with a 173 g ultra-pure osmium sample limits on double-beta processes in 184Os have been established at the level of T_{1/2} about 10^{14}-10^{17} yr. Possible resonant double-electron captures in 184Os were searched for with a sensitivity T_{1/2} about 10^{16} yr. A half-life limit T_{1/2} > 5.3 10^{19} yr was set for the double-beta decay of 192Os to the first excited level of 192Pt. The radiopurity of the osmium sample has been investigated and radionuclides 137Cs, 185Os and 207Bi were detected in the sample, while activities of 40K, 60Co, 226Ra and 232Th were limited at the mBq/kg level.

The results of the experimental investigations of double beta processes in Zinc and Tungsten isotopes with the help of middle volume (117 g, 168 g and 699 g) low-background ZnWO_4 crystal scintillators are presented. The experiment was carried out in the low-background "DAMA/R&D" set-up at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the INFN (Italy) at a depth of \approx3600 m w.e. The total measurement time exceeds ten thousand hours. New improved half-life limits on double electron capture and electron capture with positron emission in ^{64}Zn have been set: T^{2ν2K}_{1/2}(^{64}Zn) \geq 6.2(6.3) \times 10^{18} yr, T^{0ν2ε}_{1/2} (^{64}Zn) \geq 1.1(2.8) \times 10^{20} yr, T^{2νεβ^+}_{1/2}(^{64}Zn) \geq 0.7(2.1) \times 10^{21} yr, and T^{0νεβ^+}_{1/2}(^{64}Zn) \geq 4.3(5.7) \times 10^{20} yr, all the limits are at 90% (68%) C.L. The positive indication on the εβ^+ decay of ^{64}Zn with T^{(2ν+ 0ν) εβ^+}_{1/2} (^{64}Zn) = (1.1 \pm 0.9) \times 10^{19} yr suggested in [Appl. Radiat. Isot. 46 (1995) 455-456] is fully discarded by the present experiment. The half-life limits on the 2βprocesses in ^{70}Zn, ^{180}W, and two neutrino mode of 2β^- decay in ^{186}W established in the present work on the level of 10^{17}-10^{20} yr are one order of magnitude higher than those set in previous experiments.
Energy resolution, relative light output, α/βratio, decay time, pulse-shape discrimination between αparticles and γrays (βparticles), and radioactive contamination of CdWO_4, PbWO_4 (undoped, and doped by F, Eu, Mo, Gd, S), and ZnWO_4 crystal scintillators were studied. Applicability of these scintillators to search for double beta decay was proved.

A cadmium tungstate crystal boule enriched in $^{116}$Cd to 82% with mass of 1868 g was grown by the low-thermal-gradient Czochralski technique. The isotopic composition of cadmium and the trace contamination of the crystal were estimated by High Resolution Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass-Spectrometry. The crystal scintillators produced from the boule were subjected to characterization that included measurements of transmittance and energy resolution. A low background scintillation detector with two $^{116}$CdWO$_4$ crystal scintillators (586 g and 589 g) was developed. The detector was running over 1727 h deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the INFN (Italy), which allowed to estimate the radioactive contamination of the enriched crystal scintillators. The radiopurity of a third $^{116}$CdWO$_4$ sample (326 g) was tested with the help of ultra-low background high purity germanium $γ$ detector. Monte Carlo simulations of double $β$ processes in $^{116}$Cd were used to estimate the sensitivity of an experiment to search for double $β$ decay of $^{116}$Cd.

The radioactive contamination of ZnWO4 crystal scintillators has been measured deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN in Italy with a total exposure 3197 kg x h. Monte Carlo simulation, time-amplitude and pulse-shape analyses of the data have been applied to estimate the radioactive contamination of the ZnWO4 samples. One of the ZnWO4 crystals has also been tested by ultra-low background gamma spectrometry. The radioactive contaminations of the ZnWO4 samples do not exceed 0.002 -- 0.8 mBq/kg (depending on the radionuclide), the total alpha activity is in the range: 0.2 - 2 mBq/kg. Particular radioactivity, beta active 65Zn and alpha active 180W, has been detected. The effect of the re-crystallization on the radiopurity of the ZnWO4 crystal has been studied. The radioactive contamination of samples of the ceramic details of the set-ups used in the crystals growth has been checked by low background gamma spectrometry. A project scheme on further improvement of the radiopurity level of the ZnWO4 crystal scintillators is briefly addressed.
