The CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) requires constant monitoring and control of quantities of parameters to guarantee operational conditions. For this purpose, a methodology called UNICOS (UNIfied Industrial COntrols Systems) has been implemented to standardize the design of process control applications. To further accelerate the development of these applications, we migrated our existing UNICOS tooling suite toward a software factory in charge of assembling project, domain and technical information seamlessly into deployable PLC (Programmable logic Controller) – SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) systems. This software factory delivers consistently high quality by reducing human error and repetitive tasks, and adapts to user specifications in a cost-efficient way. Hence, this production tool is designed to encapsulate and hide the PLC and SCADA target platforms, enabling the experts to focus on the business model rather than specific syntaxes and grammars. Based on industry standard software, this production tool together with the UNICOS methodology [1] provides a modular environment meant to support each process control expert to develop his solutions quickly. This article presents the user requirements of the software factory and the chosen approach. Then the focus moves to the benefits of the selected architecture, and ends up with the results and a vision for further improvements.

Validation of the Data Consolidation in Layout Database for the LHC Tunnel Cryogenics Controls Upgrade / Tovar-Gonzalez, A (CERN) ; Balle, C (CERN) ; Blanco, E (CERN) ; Fortescue-Beck, E (CERN) ; Fluder, C (CERN) ; Inglese, V (CERN) ; Pezzetti, M (CERN) ; Gomes, P (CERN) ; Wolak, T (CERN) ; Dudek, M (CERN) et al.
The control system of the Large Hadron Collider cryogenics manages over 34’000 instrumentation and actuator channels. The complete information on their characteristics and parameters can be extracted from a set of views on the Layout database, to generate the specifications of the control system; from these, the code to populate PLCs (Programmable Logic Controller) and SCADA (Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition) is automatically produced, within the UNICOS framework (Unified Industrial Control System). Model Oriented Application Generation for Industrial Control Systems / Copy, B (CERN) ; Barillere, R (CERN) ; Blanco Vinuela, E (CERN) ; Fernandez Adiego, B (CERN) ; Nogueira Ferandes, R (CERN) ; Prieto Barreiro, I (CERN)
The CERN Unified Industrial Control Systems framework (UNICOS) is a software generation methodology and a collection of development tools that standardizes the design of industrial control applications [1]. A Software Factory, named the UNICOS Application Builder (UAB) [2], was introduced to ease extensibility and maintenance of the framework, introducing a stable metamodel, a set of platformindependent models and platformspecific configurations against which code generation plugins and configuration generation plugins can be written.
