Health And Performance Monitoring Of The Online Computer Cluster Of CMS / Bauer, Gerry (MIT) ; Behrens, Ulf (DESY) ; Bouffet, Olivier (CERN) ; Bowen, Matthew (CERN) ; Branson, James (UC, San Diego) ; Bukowiec, Sebastian Czeslaw (CERN) ; Ciganek, Marek (CERN) ; Cittolin, Sergio (UC, San Diego) ; Coarasa Perez, Jose Antonio (CERN) ; Deldicque, Christian (CERN) et al.
The CMS experiment's online cluster consists of 2300 computers and 170 switches or routers operating on a 24-hour basis. This huge infrastructure must be monitored in a way that the administrators are pro-actively warned of any failures or degradation in the system, in order to avoid or minimize downtime of the system which can lead to loss of data taking. Flexible custom designs for CMS DAQ / Arcidiacono, Roberta (INFN, Turin ; Piemonte Orientale U., Novara) ; Bauer, Gerry (MIT) ; Boyer, Vincent (CERN) ; Brett, Angela Mary (Fermilab) ; Cano, Eric (CERN) ; Carboni, Andrea (INFN, Pisa) ; Ciganek, Marek (CERN) ; Cittolin, Sergio (Zurich, ETH) ; Erhan, Samim (UCLA) ; Gigi, Dominique (CERN) et al.
The CMS central DAQ system is built using commercial hardware (PCs and networking equipment), except for two components: the Front-end Readout Link (FRL) and the Fast Merger Module (FMM). The FRL interfaces the sub-detector specific front-end electronics to the central DAQ system in a uniform way. [...]

This paper describes in detail the infrastructure and installation of the CMS on-line computing centre (CMSOLC) and its associated monitoring system. In summer 2007, 640 PCs acting as detector Readout Units for the CMS Data Acquisition System (DAQ) were deployed along with ~150 servers for DAQ general services. [...]

Automating the CMS DAQ / Bauer, Gerry (MIT) ; Bawej, Tomasz Adrian (CERN) ; Behrens, Ulf (DESY) ; Branson, James (UC, San Diego) ; Chaze, Olivier (CERN) ; Cittolin, Sergio (UC, San Diego) ; Coarasa Perez, Jose Antonio (CERN) ; Darlea, Georgiana Lavinia (MIT) ; Deldicque, Christian (CERN) ; Dobson, Marc (CERN) et al.
We present the automation mechanisms that have been added to the Data Acquisition and Run Control systems of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment during Run 1 of the LHC, ranging from the automation of routine tasks to automatic error recovery and context-sensitive guidance to the operator. These mechanisms helped CMS to maintain a data taking efficiency above 90\% and to even improve it to 95\% towards the end of Run 1, despite an increase in the occurrence of single-event upsets in sub-detector electronics at high LHC luminosity..
