Prototyping a ROOT-based distributed analysis workflow for HL-LHC: the CMS use case / Tedeschi, Tommaso (INFN, Perugia ; Perugia U.) ; Padulano, Vincenzo Eduardo (CERN) ; Spiga, Daniele (INFN, Perugia) ; Ciangottini, Diego (INFN, Perugia) ; Tracolli, Mirco (INFN, Perugia) ; Tejedor Saavedra, Enric (CERN) ; Guiraud, Enrico (CERN ; Princeton U.) ; Biasotto, Massimo (INFN, Legnaro ; Padua U.)
The challenges expected for the next era of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), both in terms of storage and computing resources, provide LHC experiments with a strong motivation for evaluating ways of rethinking their computing models at many levels. Great efforts have been put into optimizing the computing resource utilization for the data analysis, which leads both to lower hardware requirements and faster turnaround for physics analyses. [...]

Leveraging HPC resources with distributed RDataFrame / Padulano, V E (CERN ; Valencia, Polytechnic U.) ; Kabadzhov, I D (CERN ; Freiburg U., Inst. Phys. Chem.) ; Saavedra, E T (CERN) ; Guiraud, E (CERN)
The declarative approach to data analysis provides high-level abstractions for users to operate on their datasets in a much more ergonomic fashion compared to imperative interfaces. ROOT offers such a tool with RDataFrame, which has been tested in production environments and used in real-world analyses with optimal results. [...]

The role of the NA62 RICH in the $BR(K^+ \to \pi^+ \nu \bar\nu)$ measurement / Volpe, R (Florence U. ; INFN, Florence ; Louvain U., CP3) ; Anzivino, G (Perugia U. ; INFN, Perugia) ; Aisa, D (Perugia U. ; INFN, Perugia) ; Barbanera, M (INFN, Perugia) ; Bizzarri, M (Perugia U. ; INFN, Perugia) ; Bizzeti, A (Florence U. ; INFN, Florence ; Modena U.) ; Brizioli, F (Perugia U. ; INFN, Perugia) ; Bucci, F (INFN, Florence) ; Campeggi, C (Perugia U. ; INFN, Perugia) ; Carassiti, V (INFN, Ferrara) et al.
The NA62 experiment aims to measure the $BR$($K^+$ $\rightarrow$ $\pi^+$ $v$ $\overline{v}$) with a 10% precision. One of the main backgrounds comes from the decay $K^+$ $\rightarrow$ $\mu^+$ $v$ , therefore a highly powerful pion/muon separation is needed. [...]

Status of the NA62 ring imaging Cherenkov detector / Cenci, P (INFN, Perugia) ; Anzivino, G (Perugia U. ; INFN, Perugia) ; Aisa, D (Perugia U. ; INFN, Perugia) ; Barbanera, M (INFN, Perugia) ; Bizzarri, M (Perugia U. ; INFN, Perugia) ; Bizzeti, A (Modena U. ; INFN, Florence) ; Brizioli, F (Perugia U. ; INFN, Perugia) ; Bucci, F (INFN, Florence) ; Campeggi, C (Perugia U. ; INFN, Perugia) ; Carassiti, V (INFN, Ferrara) et al.
The Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector of the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS is a key element of particle identification in the NA62 experimental strategy. The detector fulfills different conditions: to distinguish pions from muons with a muon rejection factor of O(10$^2$) in the NA62 momentum range of operation, between 15 and 35 GeV/c; to measure particle arrival time in the decay region with a precision better than 100 ps; to provide fast signals and reference time to the NA62 trigger system. (INFN, Florence) ; Duk, V. (INFN, Perugia) ; Engelfried, J. (San Luis Potosi U.) et al.
A large RICH detector is used in NA62 to suppress the muon contamination in the charged pion sample by a factor of 100 in the momentum range between 15 and 35 GeV/c. Cherenkov light is collected by 1952 photomultipliers placed at the upstream end. [...]

Using RDataFrame, ROOT’s declarative analysis tool, in a CMS physics study / Manca, Elisabetta (speaker) (INFN Sezione di Pisa, Universita' e Scuola Normale Superiore, P) ; Guiraud, Enrico (speaker) (CERN, University of Oldenburg (DE))
With the expected large increase in the amount of available data in LHC Run 3, now more than ever HEP scientists must be able to efficiently write robust, performant analysis software that can take full advantage of the underlying hardware. Multicore computing resources are commonplace, and current trends in scientific computing include increased availability of manycore architectures. [...]
