Impedance-induced beam observables in the CERN Proton Synchrotron
/ Joly, S (Rome U.) ; Migliorati, M (Rome U. ; CERN) ; Delrieux, M (CERN) ; Imesch, G (CERN) ; Mounet, N (CERN) ; Salvant, B (CERN)
Impedance-induced tune shifts and instability growth rates in the CERN Proton Synchrotron are studied thanks to the recently updated impedance model of the machine. Calculation of these beam observables are obtained using both Vlasov solvers and macroparticle tracking simulations, and are compared with those observed during dedicated measurement campaigns. [...]

Overview of transverse instabilities in the CERN Proton Synchrotron
/ Joly, S (U. Rome La Sapienza (main) ; CERN) ; Migliorati, M (U. Rome La Sapienza (main) ; CERN ; INFN, Rome) ; Lasheen, A (CERN) ; Mikulec, B (CERN) ; Mounet, N (CERN) ; Salvant, B (CERN)
During Long Shutdown 2 (2019-20), the injector chain of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been upgraded to reach the High Luminosity LHC goals in terms of beam intensity and brightness. In the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS), this upgrade consisted in hardware modifications to double the intensity at extraction, while preserving the transverse emittance available from the CERN PS Booster. Recent Advances in the CERN PS Impedance Model and Instability Simulations
/ Joly, Sébastien (U. Rome La Sapienza (main) ; CERN ; istituto nazionale di fisica nucleare) ; Iadarola, Giovanni (CERN) ; Migliorati, Mauro (U. Rome La Sapienza (main)) ; Mounet, Nicolas (CERN) ; Salvant, Benoit (CERN) ; Zannini, Carlo (CERN)
Transverse instability growth rates in the CERN Proton Synchrotron are studied thanks to the recently updated impedance model of the machine. Using this model, macroparticle tracking simulations were performed with a new method well-suited for the slicing of short wakes, which achieves comparable performance to the originally implemented method while reducing the required number of slices by a factor of 5 to 10. Impact of second-order chromaticity on the Schottky spectra of bunched beam
/ Lasocha, Kacper (CERN) ; Alves, Diogo (CERN) ; Lannoy, Christophe (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Mounet, Nicolas (CERN)
Observation of Schottky signals provides information on important beam and machine parameters, such as transverse emittance, betatron tune, and first-order chromaticity. However, the so-far developed theory of Schottky spectra does not include the impact of the higher-order chromaticity, known to be non-negligible in the case of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). [...]

Studies on the Effect of Beam-Coupling Impedance on Schottky Spectra of Bunched Beams
/ Lannoy, Christophe (CERN ; EPFL, Lausanne, FSL) ; Alves, Diogo (CERN) ; Łasocha, Kacper (CERN) ; Mounet, Nicolas (CERN) ; Pieloni, Tatiana (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne)
Schottky monitors can be used for non-invasive beam diagnostics to estimate various bunch characteristics, such as tune, chromaticity, bunch profile or synchrotron frequency distribution. However, collective effects, in particular beam-coupling impedance, can significantly affect Schottky spectra when large bunch charges are involved. [...]

Experimental and simulated LHC Schottky spectra
/ Lannoy, Christophe (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Alves, Diogo (CERN) ; Lasocha, Kacper (CERN) ; Mounet, Nicolas (CERN) ; Pieloni, Tatiana (Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne)
Schottky monitors are valuable non-invasive tools used for beam diagnostics, providing insights into crucial bunch characteristics such as tune, chromaticity, bunch profile, or synchrotron frequency distribution. This study investigates Schottky spectra at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) through a combination of simulations and measurements. [...]

The beam coupling impedance of the CERN SPS is expected to be one of the limitations to an intensity upgrade of the LHC complex. In order to be able to reduce the SPS impedance, its main contributors need to be identified. [...]
