Automated Analysis of the Prompt Radiation Levels in the CERN Accelerator Complex / Biłko, Kacper (CERN) ; García Alía, Ruben (CERN) ; Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (CERN)
The CERN injector complex is essential in providing high-energy beams to various experiments and to the world’s largest accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Beam losses linked to its operation result in a mixed radiation field which, through both cumulative and single-event effects poses a threat to the electronic equipment exposed in the tunnel. [...]

During the Long Shutdown 2 (LS2, 2019-2020), the CERN accelerator complex has undergone major upgrades, mainly in preparation for the High-Luminosity (HL) LHC era, the ultimate capacity for its physics production. Therefore, several novel equipment and systems were designed and deployed throughout the accelerator complex. [...]

During the operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) the continuous particle losses create a mixed particle radiation field in the LHC tunnel and the adjacent caverns. Exposed electronics and accelerator components show dose dependent accelerated aging effects. [...]

Run 2 prompt dose distribution and evolution at the Large Hadron Collider and implications for future accelerator operation / Stein, Oliver (CERN) ; Biłko, Kacper (CERN) ; Brugger, Markus (CERN) ; Garcia Alia, Ruben (CERN) ; Harden, Fiona (CERN) ; Kadi, Yacine (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN)
During the operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) small fractions of beam particles are lost, creating prompt radiation fields in the accelerator tunnels. Exposed electronics and accelerator components show lifetime degradation and stochastic Single Event Effects (SEEs) which can lead to faults and downtime of the LHC. [...]

Comparison Between Run 2 TID Measurements and FLUKA Simulations in the CERN LHC Tunnel of the Atlas Insertion Region / Prelipcean, Daniel (CERN) ; Biłko, Kacper (CERN) ; Cerutti, Francesco (CERN) ; Ciccotelli, Alessia (CERN) ; Di Francesca, Diego (CERN) ; García Alía, Ruben (CERN) ; Humann, Barbara (CERN) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Ricci, Daniel (CERN) ; Sabaté-Gilarte, Marta (CERN)
In this paper we present a systematic benchmark between the simulated and the measured data for the radiation monitors useful for Radiation to Electronics (R2E) studies at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. For this purpose, the radiation levels in the main LHC tunnel on the right side of the Interaction Point 1 (ATLAS detector) are simulated using the FLUKA Monte Carlo code and compared against Total Ionising Dose (TID) measurements performed with the Beam Loss Monitoring (BLM) system, and 180 m of Distributed Optical Fibre Radiation Sensor (DOFRS). Feasibility of Slow-Extracted High-Energy Ions From the CERN Proton Synchrotron for CHARM / Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Arrutia Sota, Pablo Andreas (CERN) ; Biłko, Kacper (CERN) ; Charitonidis, Nikolaos (CERN) ; Danzeca, Salvatore (CERN) ; Delrieux, Marc (CERN) ; Duraffourg, Michel (CERN) ; Emriskova, Natalia (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; García Alía, Ruben (CERN) et al.
The CHARM High-energy Ions for Micro Electronics Reliability Assurance (CHIMERA) working group at CERN is investigating the feasibility of delivering high energy ion beams to the CHARM facility for the study of radiation effects to electronics components engineered to operate in harsh radiation environments, such as space or high-energy accelerators. The Proton Synchrotron has the potential of delivering the required high energy and high-Z (in this case, Pb) ions for radiation tests over the relevant range of Linear Energy Transfer of ~ 10 - 40 MeV cm²/mg with a > 1 mm penetration depth in silicon, specifically for single event effect tests. Detailed analysis of the baseline dose levels and localized radiation spikes in the arc sections of the Large Hadron Collider during Run 2 / Biłko, Kacper (CERN) ; Brugger, Markus (CERN) ; Garcia Alia, Ruben (CERN) ; Harden, Fiona (CERN) ; Kadi, Yacine (CERN) ; Stein, Oliver (CERN)
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has eight insertion regions (IRs) which house the large experiments or accelerator equipment. These IRs are interconnected with the arc sections consisting of a periodic magnet structure. [...]

Risk of Halo-Induced Magnet Quenches in the HL-LHC Beam Dump Insertion / Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (CERN ; Montpellier U.) ; Apollonio, Andrea (CERN) ; Belli, Eleonora (CERN) ; Bracco, Chiara (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; García Alía, Ruben (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Lerner, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Morales Vigo, Sara (CERN) et al.
After the High Luminosity (HL-LHC) upgrade, the LHC will be exposed to a higher risk of magnet quenches during periods of short beam lifetime. Collimators in the extraction region (IR6) assure the protection of magnets against asynchronous beam dumps, but they also intercept a fraction of the beam halo leaking from the betatron cleaning insertion. Simulation of Heavy-Ion Beam Losses with Crystal Collimation* / Cai, Rongrong (CERN) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; D'Andrea, Marco (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (CERN ; IES, Montpellier) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Salvat Pujol, Francesc (CERN) et al.
With the higher stored energy envisioned for future heavy-ion runs in the LHC and the challenging fragmentation aspect of heavy-ion beams due to interaction with collimator material, the need arises for even more performing collimation systems. One promising solution is crystal channeling, which is used in the HL-LHC baseline and starts with Run III for heavy-ion collimation. [...]

Power Deposition Studies for Crystal-Based Heavy Ion Collimation in the LHC / Potoine, Jean-Baptiste (CERN ; IES, Montpellier) ; Bruce, Roderik (CERN) ; Cai, Rongrong (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) ; Lechner, Anton (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Waets, Andreas (CERN) ; Wrobel, Frederic (IES, Montpellier)
The LHC heavy-ion program with 208Pb⁸²⁺ beams is foreseen to benefit from a significant intensity upgrade in 2022. A performance limitation may arise from ion fragments scattered out of the collimators in the betatron cleaning insertion, which risk quenching superconducting magnets during periods of short beam lifetime.
