Resistivity Characterization of Molybdenum-Coated Graphite-Based Substrates for High-Luminosity LHC Collimators / Accettura, Carlotta (Politecnico di Milano (IT)) ; Amorim, David (Universite Grenoble-Alpes (FR)) ; Antipov, Sergey ; Baris, Adrienn (CERN) ; Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Caspers, Fritz (European Scientific Institute (FR)) ; Garcia-Tabares Valdivieso, Elisa (CERN) et al.
The High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) project aims at extending the operability of the LHC by another decade and increasing by more than a factor of ten the integrated luminosity that the LHC will have collected by the end of Run 3. This will require doubling the beam intensity and reducing the transverse beam size compared to those of the LHC design. [...]

Detailed Electromagnetic Characterisation of HL-LHC Low Impedance Collimators / Kurtulus, Adnan (CERN ; ETH, Zurich (main)) ; Accentura, Carlotta (CERN) ; Biancacci, Nicolo (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN) ; Caspers, Fritz (CERN) ; Chitnis, Ninad (CERN) ; Giordano, Francesco (CERN) ; Illan Fiastre, Ricardo (CERN) ; Joly, Sébastien (CERN) ; Lamas Garcia, Inigo (CERN) et al.
The High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) project will upgrade the LHC machine to allow operation with increased luminosity for the experiments. In order to achieve this goal, different operational parameters of the machine need to be pushed beyond the present design values, including the stored beam energy. [...]

Ultra-high vacuum characterization of molybdenum-carbide graphite for HL-LHC collimators / Accettura, Carlotta (CERN ; Milan, Polytech.) ; Beghi, Marco (Milan, Polytech.) ; Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Bregliozzi, Giuseppe (CERN) ; Cattenoz, Gregory (CERN) ; Guardia Valenzuela, Jorge (U. Zaragoza (main) ; CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Taborelli, Mauro (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN)
In view of the High-Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) collimation system, a family of novel molybdenum-carbide graphite (MoGr) composites was developed to meet the challenging requirements of HL-LHC beam-halo collimation, in particular the electrical conductivity and thermo-mechanical performances. The Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) behaviour of this material was extensively characterized to assess its compatibility with the accelerator’s specifications. [...]

Titanium Coating of Ceramics for Accelerator Applications / Vollenberg, Wilhelmus (CERN) ; Costa Pinto, Pedro (CERN) ; Holliger, Benjamin (CERN) ; Sapountzis, Antonios (CERN) ; Taborelli, Mauro (CERN)
Titanium thin films can be deposited on ceramics, in particular alumina, without adherence problems. Even after air exposure their secondary electron yield is low compared to alumina and can be further reduced by conditioning or beam scrubbing. [...]

Novel Materials for Collimators at LHC and its Upgrades / Bertarelli, Alessandro (CERN) ; Dallocchio, Alessandro (CERN) ; Garlasche, Marco (CERN) ; Gentini, Luca (CERN) ; Gradassi, Paolo (CERN) ; Guinchard, Michael (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Rossi, Adriana (CERN) ; Sacristan De Frutos, Oscar (CERN) ; Carra, Federico (CERN ; Turin Polytechnic) et al.
Collimators for last-generation particle accelerators like the LHC, must be designed to withstand the close interaction with intense and energetic particle beams, safely operating over an extended range of temperatures in harsh environments, while minimizing the perturbing effects, such as instabilities induced by RF impedance, on the circulating beam. The choice of materials for collimator active components is of paramount importance to meet these requirements, which are to become even more demanding with the increase of machine performances expected in future upgrades, such as the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). Within the LHC Injector Upgrade (LIU) project, the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) needs to be upgraded to inject into the LHC higher intensity and brighter 25-ns bunch spaced beams. To mitigate the Electron Multipacting (E.M.) phenomenon, a well-known limiting factor for high-intensity positively charged beams, CERN developed carbon coatings with a low Secondary Electron Yield (SEY). Two new absorbing materials were developed as collimator inserts to fulfil the requirements of HL-LHC higher brightness beams: molybdenum-carbide graphite (MoGr) and copper-diamond (CuCD). These materials were tested under intense beam impacts at CERN HiRadMat facility in 2015, when full jaw prototypes were irradiated. [...]
