Central and peripheral interactions of hadrons / Dremin, I.M. (Lebedev Inst. ; Moscow Phys. Eng. Inst.) ; Nechitailo, V.A. (Lebedev Inst.) ; White, S.N. (CERN)
Surprisingly enough, the ratio of elastic to inelastic cross sections of proton interactions increases with energy in the interval correspond- ing to ISR - LHC (i.e. from 10 GeV to 10 TeV). [...]

R&D for a Dedicated Fast Timing Layer in the CMS Endcap Upgrade / White, Sebastian N. (Rockefeller U.)
The PhaseII Upgrades of CMS are being planned for the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) era when the mean number of interactions per beam crossing ("in-time pileup") is expected to reach ~140-200. The potential backgrounds arising from mis-associated jets and photon showers, for example, during event reconstruction could be reduced if physics objects are tagged with an "event time". [...]

ATLAS Results from the first Pb-Pb Collisions / White, Sebastian N. (Rockefeller U. ; INFN, Pisa ; Pisa U.)
The ATLAS detector is capable of resolving the highest energy pp collisions at luminosities sufficient to yield 10's of simultaneous interactions within a bunch collision lasting <0.5 nsec. [...]

Proton-Nucleus Collisions at the LHC: Scientific Opportunities and Requirements / Salgado, C.A. (Santiago de Compostela U.) ; Alvarez-Muniz, J. (Santiago de Compostela U.) ; Arleo, F. (Annecy, LAPTH) ; Armesto, N. (Santiago de Compostela U.) ; Botje, M. (NIKHEF, Amsterdam) ; Cacciari, M. (Paris U., VI-VII) ; Campbell, J. (Fermilab) ; Carli, C. (CERN) ; Cole, B. (Columbia U.) ; D'Enterria, D. (CERN ; ICREA, Barcelona) et al.
Proton-nucleus (p+A) collisions have long been recognized as a crucial component of the physics programme with nuclear beams at high energies, in particular for their reference role to interpret and understand nucleus-nucleus data as well as for their potential to elucidate the partonic structure of matter at low parton fractional momenta (small-x). Here, we summarize the main motivations that make a proton-nucleus run a decisive ingredient for a successful heavy-ion programme at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and we present unique scientific opportunities arising from these collisions. Very Forward Calorimetry at the LHC - Recent results from ATLAS / White, Sebastian N. (Brookhaven) /for the ATLAS Collaboration
We present first results from the ATLAS Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDC) based on 7~TeV pp collision data recorded in 2010. The ZDC coverage of +/-~350 microradians about the forward direction makes possible the measurement of neutral particles (primarily pi0's and neutrons) over the kinematic region x_F >~0.1 and out to p_T<~ 1.2 GeV/c at large x_F. The FP420 R&D Project: Higgs and New Physics with forward protons at the LHC / Albrow, M.G. (Fermilab) ; Appleby, R.B. (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; Manchester U.) ; Arneodo, Michele (INFN, Turin) ; Atoian, G. (Yale U.) ; Barlow, R. (Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech. ; Manchester U.) ; Beaumont, W. (Antwerp U., WISINF) ; Bonnet, L. (Louvain U.) ; Brandt, A. (Texas U., Arlington) ; Bussey, P. (Glasgow U.) ; Buttar, C. (Glasgow U.) et al.
We present the FP420 R&D; project, which has been studying the key aspects of the development and installation of a silicon tracker and fast-timing detectors in the LHC tunnel at 420 m from the interaction points of the ATLAS and CMS experiments. These detectors would measure precisely very forward protons in conjunction with the corresponding central detectors as a means to study Standard Model (SM) physics, and to search for and characterise New Physics signals.
