Chapter 14: Cryogenics for the HL-LHC / Claudet, S (CERN) ; Ferlin, G (CERN) ; Monneret, E (CERN) ; Perin, A (CERN) ; Sisti, M (CERN) ; Van Weelderen, R (CERN) ; Lees, A (CERN) ; Gahier, V (CERN) ; Brodzinski, K (CERN) ; Delprat, L (CERN)
The discovery of a Higgs boson at CERN in 2012 was the start of a major program working to measure this particle’s properties with the highest possible precision for testing the validity of the Standard Model and to search for further new physics at the energy frontier. The LHC is in a unique position to pursue this program. [...]

Engineering design tools and processes for cryogenics / Lees, Andrew John (speaker) (CERN)
The Mechanical and Engineering support section of the Cryogenics group (TE-CRG-ME) is heavily involved in the design, production, installation and commissioning of a wide range of cryogenic devices and systems for the experiments, accelerators and test facilities at CERN. To increase the efficiency of our work and improve the standardization to the norms, calculations and methods used for development, a Cryogenic Engineering Tool Kit has been developed. This presentation will review the main contents of the toolkit and the importance of these methods to TE CRG ME..

HL-LHC IT STRING: Status and Perspectives / Bajko, M (CERN) ; Baglin, V (CERN) ; Ballarino, A (CERN) ; Bednarek, M J (CERN) ; Bertolasi, S (CERN) ; Bertone, C (CERN) ; Blanchard, S (CERN) ; Bozzini, D (CERN) ; Coulot, E (CERN) ; Coupat, C (CERN) et al.
The HL-LHC IT STRING, an integrated test stand for the major components of the HL-LHC Inner Triplet (IT) zone, is in its construction phase in a surface building at CERN. The main motivation is to study and validate the collective behavior of the different systems: magnets, circuit protection, cryogenics for magnets and superconducting link, magnet powering, vacuum, alignment, and interconnections between magnets and superconducting link. Cryogenic Upgrade of the Helium Central Liquefier and Superconducting Cable & Wire Test Facilities at CERN / Pirotte, O (CERN) ; Lees, A (CERN) ; Barbe, T (CERN) ; Dupont, T (CERN) ; Pezzetti, M (CERN)
The demand for liquid helium (LHe) for users at CERN without dedicated cryogenic infrastructure is set to increase due to future projects and experiments in the Antiproton Decelerator. LHe is supplied to the users by means of 500 liter dewars filled by the central liquefier (B165) that comprises a cryogenic plant of 400 W @ 4.5 K. [...]

First operational experience of the upgraded cryogenic infrastructure of the vertical magnet test facility in the SM18 hall, including HFM and cluster D test stations. / Benda, V (CERN) ; Lees, A (CERN) ; Pirotte, O (CERN) ; Craen, A Vande (CERN) ; Pezzetti, M (CERN) ; Lamboy, J P (CERN) ; Lefebvre, V (CERN) ; Bajko, M (CERN) ; Giloux, C (CERN)
As part of the R&D; program for HL-LHC, the future upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the vertical magnet test facility in the SM18 cryogenic test hall at CERN has seen significant development. Since the installation of HFM and Cluster D cryogenic test stations in 2017, the facility is comprised of five vertical test cryostats of various sizes operating at either 1.9 K or 4.2 K. [...]

Thermal performance of the new superfluid helium vertical test cryostats for magnet tests at CERN / Vande Craen, Arnaud (CERN) ; Bajko, M (CERN) ; Benda, V (CERN) ; Deschamps, J-B (CERN) ; Giloux, C (CERN) ; Lees, A (CERN) ; Parma, V (CERN) ; Pasdeloup, F (CERN) ; Pirotte, O (CERN)
In the frame of the R&D; program of the HL-LHC, the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), CERN augmented its test facility with two new large-scale vertical test stations for superconducting magnet testing. The cryostats composing the core of these test stations share design features but are of different dimensions: one allows testing magnets up to 1.5 m diameter, 2.5 m long for a maximum weight of 15 t, while the other can accommodate magnets up to 0.9 m diameter, and 5.5 m long for a maximum weight of 18 t. Operation of a Cryogenic Current Comparator with Nanoampere Resolution for Continuous Beam Intensity Measurements in the Antiproton Decelerator at CERN / Fernandes, Miguel (CERN ; U. Liverpool (main)) ; Alves, Diogo (CERN) ; Koettig, Torsten (CERN) ; Lees, Andrew (CERN) ; Schwickert, Marcus (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Stöhlker, Thomas (Darmstadt, GSI ; U. Jena (main)) ; Tan, Jocelyn (CERN) ; Welsch, Carsten (U. Liverpool (main))
Low-intensity charged particle beams are particularly challenging for non-perturbative beam diagnostics due to the small amplitude of induced electromagnetic fields. The Antiproton Decelerator (AD) and Extra Low ENergy Antiproton (ELENA) rings at CERN decelerate beams containing 10⁷ antiprotons. [...]

Cryogenic upgrade of the low heat load liquid helium cryostat used to house the Cryogenic Current Comparator in the Antiproton Decelerator at CERN / Lees, A (CERN) ; Koettig, T (CERN) ; Fernandes, M (CERN) ; Tan, J (CERN)
The Cryogenic Current Comparator (CCC) and its purpose built cryostat were installed in the low-energy Antiproton Decelerator (AD) at CERN in 2015. A pulse-tube cryocooler recondenses evaporated helium to liquid at 4.2 K filling the helium vessel of the cryostat at an equivalent cooling power of 0.69 W. [...]

Optimized Cryogenic Current Comparator for CERN's Low-Energy Antiproton Facilities / Fernandes, Miguel (CERN ; U. Liverpool (main)) ; Alves, Diogo (CERN) ; Geithner, Rene (U. Jena (main) ; Helmholtz Inst., Jena) ; Koettig, Torsten (CERN) ; Lees, Andrew (CERN) ; Neubert, Ralf (U. Non-perturbative measurement of low-intensity charged particle beams is particularly challenging for beam diagnostics due to the low amplitude of the induced electromagnetic fields. In the low-energy Antiproton Decelerator (AD) and the future Extra Low ENergy Antiproton (ELENA) rings at CERN, an absolute measurement of the beam intensity is essential to monitor operational efficiency and provide important calibration data for all AD experiments. Design and optimisation of low heat load liquid helium cryostat to house cryogenic current comparator in antiproton decelerator at CERN / Lees, A (CERN) ; Koettig, T (CERN) ; Fernandes, M (CERN) ; Tan, J (CERN)
The Cryogenic Current Comparator (CCC) is installed in the low-energy Antiproton Decelerator (AD) at CERN to make an absolute measurement of the beam intensity. Operating below 4.2 K, it is based on a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) and employs a superconducting niobium shield to supress magnetic field components not linked to the beam current.
