High-gradient behavior of a dipole-mode rf structure
/ Woolley, B (Lancaster U. ; CERN) ; Burt, G (Lancaster U.) ; Dexter, A C (Lancaster U.) ; Peacock, R (Lancaster U.) ; Millar, W L (Lancaster U.) ; Catalan Lasheras, N (CERN) ; Degiovanni, A (CERN) ; Grudiev, A (CERN) ; Mcmonagle, G (CERN) ; Syratchev, I (CERN) et al.
A normal-conducting, X-band traveling wave structure operating in the dipole mode has been systematically high-gradient tested to gain insight into the maximum possible gradients in these types of structure. Measured structure conditioning, breakdown behavior, and achieved surface fields are reported as well as a postmortem analysis of the breakdown position and a scanning electron microscope analysis of the high-field surfaces. History of hadron therapy accelerators
/ Degiovanni, Alberto (CERN) ; Amaldi, Ugo (TERA, Novara)
In the last 60 years, hadron therapy has made great advances passing from a stage of pure research to a well-established treatment modality for solid tumours. In this paper the history of hadron therapy accelerators is reviewed, starting from the first cyclotrons used in the thirties for neutron therapy and passing to more modern and flexible machines used nowadays. Beam Commissioning of the 750 MHz Proton RFQ for the LIGHT Prototype
/ Dimov, Veliko (Unlisted, CH) ; Caldara, Michele (Unlisted, CH) ; Degiovanni, Alberto (Unlisted, CH) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (Unlisted, CH) ; Fink, Daniel (Unlisted, CH) ; Giunta, Marina (Unlisted, CH) ; Jeff, Adam (Unlisted, CH) ; Lombardi, Alessandra (CERN) ; Mathot, Serge (CERN) ; Valloni, Alessandra (Unlisted, CH) et al.
ADAM (Application of Detectors and Accelerators to Medicine), a CERN spin-off company, is developing the Linac for Image Guided Hadron Therapy, LIGHT, which will accelerate proton beams up to 230 MeV. The design of the linac will allow fast intensity and energy modulation for pencil-beam scanning during cancer treatment. [...]

Accelerating Structures
/ Degiovanni, Alberto (CERN)
In this lecture the basic concepts of electromagnetic waves in accelerating structures are discussed. After a short introduction on the propagation of electromagnetic waves and on the concept of travelling wave and standing wave structures, the most important parameters and figures of merit used to describe the acceleration efficiency and the performance of accelerating structures in terms of power consumption is presented. [...]
