让巴尔号的名字来自九年战争中活跃的法国私掠船长。作为世界上最后一艘完工服役的战列舰，让巴尔号的命运很是波折。它于1936年12月于Caquot船坞（后来改名“让巴尔船坞”）开建，1940年五月原定要将这条建了一半的战列舰送到德国空军的打击半径之外到北非去。该舰被装在一个人工浮筏里下水。

避难

五月底，法国战役的结局已经很清楚，法国人开始将她挖离土坝，以让她在潮涨时的6月20日出海。此时也安装了一半的推进机器。

建成

在北非法军加入盟军后，让巴尔号在美国帮助下开始同黎塞留号一起进行了改装，自由法国海军通过海军中将Fenard从1943年起开始物色美国船厂。当中遇到了不少困难因为她的设计到零件全是和美国船不一样的。[2]

服役

该舰于1949年1月16日正式服役，此时所有的高射炮、12门100MM双用副炮和14门博福斯授权生产的57MM两用高炮还未安装。到了53年才安装齐全。[3]

1955年五月一日该舰真正开始执勤。载着戴高乐总统访问了哥本哈根和Oslo。7月在纽约参加了美国独立战争中的法国船只登陆纽波特175周年典礼。.[4]10月21日在土伦她接替黎塞留号成为法国海军南部群旗舰。[5]
