利希滕斯坦研究過蒙德里安、马蒂斯、塞尚、莫奈，美国的德·库宁、帕洛克、雷明顿等人的作品，以及东方的美术。他还独创了网点画法。[1] 以戲仿其他畫家的作品而出名。[2]

早年

利希滕斯坦出生于曼哈頓的一個中上層階級的猶太家庭[3][4][5]。 其父彌爾頓（Milton）是地產經紀人，其母比亞特麗絲（Beatrice，娘家姓Werner）是家庭主婦[6]。利希滕斯坦在曼哈頓上西城長大，12嵗之前在公立學校讀書。之後進入獨立學院德懷特學校（Dwight School）學習，1940年畢業。他在學校中就開始展現出對藝術的興趣[7]，此外也是爵士樂愛好者，常去阿波羅劇院聼音樂會[7]。在其作品中就常常出現演奏中的音樂家[7]。高中的最後一年裏利希滕斯坦參加了紐約藝術學生聯盟，接受畫家雷金納德·馬什（Reginald Marsh）的教導。[8]
