Merging items

[edit]

Hallo Praveenp,

For merging items, you may want to use the merge.js gadget from help page about merging. It has an option "Request deletion for extra items on RfD" to automatically place a request to delete the emptied page. This way of nominating makes it a lot easier for the admins to process the requests.

Malayalam articles

[edit]

Hello.

Can you translate and upload en:Template:Administrative divisions of Azerbaijan and en:Administrative divisions of Azerbaijan in Malayalam Wikipedia?

Yours sincerely, Karalainza (talk) 01:25, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Q320594

[edit]

Transcriptions are not the same as aliases. Each of the aliases given in English for Abhigyanashakuntalam (Q320594) appear as the title of an English translation that has been published, as you can verify from the scans linked at s:en:Śakuntalā. Please do not remove valid English aliases. --EncycloPetey (talk) 15:01, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

EncycloPetey, Thank you for the clarification. But I don't know how much is this correct! Sakunthala is just a character of the play and translators adapted title multiple ways. British translators probably were not able to concise 'अभिज्ञान' translation effectively, so they could have just used the name of title character. Most popular Shakunthalam translation in my language is Malayala Shakunthalam (ml:മലയാളശാകുന്തളം), which means Strory of Shakunthala in Malayalam. I am pretty sure that Malayala Shakunthalam is not an alias. Translated titles are better suited for "has edition or translation (P747)", not aliases.--Praveen:talk 15:21, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Titles are translated differently into different languages by their translators, and not always in predictable ways. What is important for an alias is that it is a known name used in that language. For works such as books, plays, or poetry, published titles used in library databases are the most important, because they will tie together database records of the same work. If the title was used on a book or in a catalog, then it is "correct". You can see which titles have been used in various languages at A Bibliography of the Sanskrit Drama on Wikisource, but note that not all pages have been proofread, so you will need to verify against the scan of the book. --EncycloPetey (talk) 21:59, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
