Greater Manchester elections
[edit]Hi - you've added a lot of Greater Manchester council elections, but with each election split by ward, so 2022 Manchester City Council election in Didsbury West (Q111631002), 2022 Manchester City Council election in Didsbury East (Q111631001) etc. It would be more convenient if the candidacies were all linked to the parent election (2022 Manchester City Council election (Q109380939)) and distinguished by qualifier electoral district (P768). This is the way it has generally been handled for Parliamentary elections for example. It would also be semantically more accurate as well - the separate ballots (wards) are all actually part of one whole election. Thoughts? John Womble (talk) 16:47, 7 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hi John Womble,
- I'm not so sure that it is more semantically accurate to model the elections in that way. Section 6(2) of the Local Government Act 1972 (Q1510461) would indicate that each of the polls in each ward constitute their own election: "For the purposes of the election of councillors [...] there shall be a separate election for each electoral division or ward."
- Given that, I'd argue that if we are to model the elections accurately then candidacy in election (P3602) should link to the ward's election, and councillors should be elected in (P2715) those ward elections as well, but if the ward-level election items don't exist then falling back to a higher level group of elections.
- Does that make sense? I'd be happy to take this to the WikiProject elections, WikiProject every politician or Wikiproject British Politicians talk pages to get further input from others if you want. M2Ys4U (talk) 21:15, 7 June 2022 (UTC)
- The terminology is sometimes confusing (at least to me), but my understanding is there is a separate poll for each ward, but they constitute a single election. You can't stand for two seats in the same council on the same day, because they are part of the same election, but you can stand for seats in two different councils on the same day, because they are different elections.
- I think it would be valid to model it either way, it's a matter of consistency and what is most useful. At the moment, pretty much all other UK elections seem to be mapped as one object per election, not one per ward. But I agree it's worth getting further input - I'll have a think and raise something on the above WPs. John Womble (talk) 08:05, 8 June 2022 (UTC)
2024 general election
[edit]You've made a few errors in added 2024 general election candidacies which I have reverted - e.g. I'm pretty sure Muhammad of Ghor (Q1647182) isn't standing for election this year, or any year. Could you be more careful with matching names? Pigeon Bananas (talk) 08:51, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi there, thanks for noticing those edits and reverting them, a couple of those were very obviously wrong - sorry about that. I did attempt to do a sanity check on a sample of the matches but obviously that wasn't enough. I'll make sure to do a more thorough job next time. M2Ys4U (talk) 14:02, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
