Figure skating
[edit]Hi! I saw your contributions about figure skating so I wanted to welcome you! I'm the one doing most of the work about it on Wikidata, so I'm really happy to find someone else. For information, the Wikidata:WikiProject Figure skating exists, which link tools, SPARQL queries, etc. It also explain how we are modelling some of the not-so-obvious things.
I'm adding the scores using a scraper tool then OpenRefine, and if you are interested, I can send you my json commands for it (by email?). You can also activate User:Ash Crow/creation-helpers by adding:
/*** figure skating creator ***/
importScript ( 'User:Ash Crow/WikidataSearchWidget.js' );
importScript ( 'User:Ash Crow/skating-competitions-creation-helper.js' );
to your common.js. This gadget ask for the Qid of the competition, the date of the events and a reference and create the needed items (men's singles, short program, free program, etc.), linking each of them correctly together and copying the relevant information from the competition (like the ice rink, the organizer, etc.). It's quicker than doing things manually!
If you have any question, don't hesitate to ask me. --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 09:28, 5 February 2020 (UTC)
- I really hope to learn some of this stuff one day but at this point, unfortunately it's quite overwhelming for me.. I don't understand any of these terms. Hergilei (talk) 09:35, 5 February 2020 (UTC)
- Then maybe as a first step you can join the dedicated wikiproject? So at least you'll have an idea where to ask questions/find answers. The project link to tools, gadgets, maintenance queries, etc. but you don't need to use any of it, it's just there for the day you want to try. Joining the project means that when a discussion start somewhere about figure skating (for example, the creation of a new property), you'll have a notification. You can ask any question you want on the talk page, also.
- Basically the core of my previous message was that I saw you were doing things entirely manually, which is a way prone to mistakes (for example, you forgot one skater on the Belarussian Championships). We have tools and gadgets that help us automatize most of the work, and check for common mistakes. You are under absolutely no obligation to use any of it, it can just be really helpful. Maybe you can just continue as you were doing and if you are getting tired of doing something manually ask me "hey, is there a way to do [specific thing]?" and then I explain to you how to do that? So you don't have to learn everything at once and you decide what is more important to you. --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 13:53, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
