Referenced English names
[edit]Hi Boylarva99 - thanks for your work on wikidata! Most of it is good, but (as you've probably been notified from my changes!), it is very important to keep referenced names with the exact orthography used by the reference. Organisations like IOC and IUCN capitalise English names of species as standard, with excellent reason (a green warbler can be any bird that warbles and is green in colour, but a Green Warbler is specifically defined as Phylloscopus nitidus green warbler (Q2672900), and nothing else). This has to be followed here, whatever your personal views on capitalisation are. Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 17:53, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
- Can you cite the rule on Wikidata that says that IOC orthography must be followed? From my understanding, species common names are not to be capitalized (see Help:Label#Capitalization.) Also, English Wikipedia does not follow the practice, as per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Archive_156#Bird_common_name_decapitalisation.
